Honestly, I think Generations and 2017 make Classic Sonic too 'cutesy'

Honestly, I think Generations and 2017 make Classic Sonic too 'cutesy'

He's cute to an extent, but they go a bit far.

Sonic Mania wins again.

Maybe, but that's still better than Modern Sonic still trying to be hip and cool in 2016 almost 2017.

>Join the Resistance
>It's gonna be called Sonic Wars
>The entire game is going to be one huge Star Wars parody

But i want cute Sonic

I think it has something to do with the shade of blue that they're using, since his anatomy is pretty much identical to the original concept art.

Darker hair tends to signify maturity and I agree Generations/2017 Classic Sonic looks very kiddish.

Modern Sonic was at his best in Unleashed and Black Knight.

One incredibly flawed game and one outright bad game mind you, but that's where he was best.

We'll see

When I brought this up people accused me of being Chris-chan.

"I don't mind playing the villain if it means doing the right thing"
Black Knight was maybe the only game that really nailed Sonic's sense of free-spirited justice and that's weird to me.

Me too. It's a fun design.

It's incredibly weird, and it was fleeting
>Capable of having levity, but not being out and out 'BALDY MC NOSE HAIR HAHA'
>Had an ego, had his own version of justice, and wasn't going to be swayed on it
>Effective redesign that got the proportions right and just looks good
>Jason Griffith finally came into his own in the role, just before getting canned
Oh well.

It's too bad the game itself was so thoroughly unfun to play because it was on-point with everything else.

I can have fun with Unleashed, but yeah, I would never touch either storybook games ever again.

But he's cute in Mania too.

Classic Sonic has a natural cuteness, I think this is probably accurate. It might be the shade of color.

You can just call him Sonic.

His design was much better in the later games though.
And yeah, the original color scheme was better. The pink shoes don't look very good either.

I'm pretty sure Sonic's modern cyan color scheme is based on some ancient concept art that was outdated before the first game even came out. People sometimes use that as an excuse.

I think they exaggerated the difference in color and pudginess to further differentiate him from modern Sonic. He doesn't quite match any of the original depictions of classic Sonic.

It's entirely an emphasis thing, yeah.

This should be Sonics main design. Literally 10/10. Also the cringe is gone when he's just a cutesy animal that doesn't speak about "WOAH RADICAL CHILI DOGS". Mario has kept a fairly cute design while innovating slightly, and the fact that he doesn't speak often makes him still today one of the best characters. Modern Sonic is trash.

Sonic was always meant to have a slight edge to him though, not much, but slight to give him a different sort of flair than Mario.

Classic Sonic has had that out the gate.

Yeah, it's pretty clear that they lightened him significantly in Mania to make him more distinctive looking.

The irony of you trying to be hip and cool by hating on the hated modern Sonic for trying to be hip and cool. You do realize that Sonic was created to be hip and cool right?

That image is like the evolution of a cancer tumor

Yes but it being subtle and implied is far better than him outright being a radical dood. Body language would convey it perfectly. An eye roll, a foot tap when the player doesnt move, that iconic finger wag. Marios italian, but him saying its a me once a game is a lot better than him talking babbipty boopy fake english in cutscenes.

Subtlely cool classic Sonic is far cooler than tryhard doodbroheimskate Sanic

>That feel when you change the design of Classic Sonic and pretend people are praising your shit design when they talk about the classic design
Let me guess it's those lonely japs who designed Generations "Classic" Sonic

I miss SA2 Sonic

I only think Heroes and 06 are bad on that.

I agree, but I still think modern Classic Sonic is too cutesy.

This is still my favorite Classic Sonic design.

That isn't 10/10.

This is.

I'm just saying Classic Sonic stands the test of time better. He's cute but can also have an attitude and looks like Mickey Mouse. Modern Sonic looks stuck in the early 2000's. He's from the era where mascot platformers were dying so they tried extra hard making the characters look more edgy and sleek to appeal to the kids who were jumping to games like GTA.

It's uncool to try hard to be cool and edgy.

>Tfw theres an alternate timeline where Sega keeping the Classic design where he barely speaks leads to a string of successful games where Sonic stays timeless and revered
>Tfw we live in the Modern Sonic Timeline

WHY LIVE

This kills me. What an elder god tier design, how coukd they fuck everything up so badly

So that means the basis of the creation of the character was uncool, remember the Sonic commercials? Remember those? I think it's just that people think it's cool to call something edgy, negativity is a positive on Sup Forums.

It's because they're using Japanese Classic Sonic when they should be using American Classic Sonic.
That guy was all about cool.

No, I didn't watch commercials, I watched how he actually was in games like Sonic CD. Calm, quiet, a little impatient, and serious, but empathetic to characters like the animals and Amy. That's cool. Being a snarky 90's hip hop faggot isn't.

Nice choice. My fav is definitely a toss up between the CD animations and the OVA.

Yep, almost exactly with this

Commercials for games dont equal the games themselves. Crash Bandicoot had commercials where he was a dick with a megaphone, totally unrepresentative of the game. In game he was a well designed, funny character with potential for being iconic. Sonic was 100x better than Crash in this regard. I mean holy christ look at some of the Sonic artwork from back in the day. God tier.

Youre supposed to seperate shit like marketing/tie in shows/etc. If they would have kept Classic Sonic, kept the worlds looking cartoony like Mario 3D Land for example, kept humans out of it, etc Sonic would be far more of an icon and not a meme

That's what sonic should look like, the edgelord version from adventure is terrible and only serves to feed autists.

>Not liking the chili dogs
Sonic hasn't been radical since Adventure 2
You're an autist

>Darker hair tends to signify maturity
No it doesn't, shut the fuck up.

The only reason Sonic didn't speak more often in the classic games was hardware restrictions, he spoke all the time in official advertisements and other licensed media, as intended.

Classic Sonic being a mute in Sonic Generations is a fabrication created because they couldn't get a voice actor who would please everybody.

Let's make him nu-male

>There are people alive today who defend Modern Sonic and the wave of cringe he brings to each awful game hes in (bb..buh muh Generati- shut the fuck up it was subpar at best)
>There are people who are adverse to stripping away everything that made Sonic bad and keeping is timeless, 10/10 original design

You assholes probably think Sonic Boom is great too

Why didn't he talk in Sonic R and Sonic Jam

That is why I said the basis of the character, not the character themselves, but it seems that was the character all along because when he finally got a voice that is what he was, I am not trying to paint a negative picture for you guys but I personally think that non-16bit sonic is just Sonic, not a try hard to be cool, that's just what he was, if the genesis allowed him to talk that would have been who he was. Ever since sonic could talk he's been that way, in the cartoons as well, I am not sure about comics. Sonic is just too cool for school guys.

DiC sonic is the chili dog one. Granted it did seep it's way into the games.

>all along
>because when he finally
You're retarded,

...

Slightly updated. I wish there was a native screenshot of his neutral pose out.

I guess I am because I don't understand your post, sorry.

>Determined eyes
>Sharp spines
>VIBRANT blue, not this baby blue shit

I like the Sonic Boom show, but I never played the game.

If only

Cute is not a word I have ever thought of when thinking about Mario.

In fact, it's quite bizarre that gaming's biggest icon is a fat, moustached middle-aged plumber when you think about it.

>In fact, it's quite bizarre that gaming's biggest icon is a fat, moustached middle-aged plumber who's cute.

You're not missing anything. The only good from the Boom franchise is the show, defunct comic, and the mobile game. The recent Fire and Ice is the better of the three Nintendo games but it's still a hard meh/10.

HE'S NOT CUTE

i wanna fuck sonic

Everything wrong with Modern Sonic in one post

neither is your anime shit

We're having a good thread so far, go away.

...

fifth post best post

Why so divided guys?

Does the Mario series get this much division over the different iterations of Mario? (legit question)

>Mario gets longer limbs and becomes taller
>Mario is Mario
>Sonic gets longer limbs and becomes taller
>WOAH RADICAL CHILI DOGS 2SCHOOL4COOL

People will fight me for it, but I think the rounded shapes and more detailed shading makes Sonic 3's character sprites look real nice.

And holy hell burn '06 Sonic with fire

Will the stages have areas only Tails or Knuckles can access?

A bit too dark blue. Now he looks like American Sonic.

...

Yeah, you can see Knuckles break blocks on a bottom path in Mirage Saloon whereas Sonic has to turn back around because he can't break them.

Modern Sonic is a good design that conveys the same character as classic.

Getting this mad over green eyes shows how autistic you really are.

You just lost THE GAME

Considering the dev teams history, without a doubt.

I don't think radical edgyness comes to mind when normies see modern Sonic

Honestly I feel the concept of a "classic" and "modern" sonic polarizes two distinct aspects of his personality.

The idea of classic Sonic being a cutesy dogooder and modern Sonic being the asshole quipmaste rubs me the wrong way. I wish they could balance out the character.

>Generations
>Subpar at best

Hopefully after 2017 Modern Sonic just exists as his own thing.

You'd be surprised. There's been debate for a while now about 3D Mario and what design philosophy the levels should use (64, Galaxy, or 3D land). Then there's the whole Paper Mario debacle and the debate over which RPG is the best.

There are posts in this very thread that talk about that. Sonic's characterization peaked with Black Knight because it found that sweet spot, just like how Shadows character peaked in 06. Funny how that happens.

Have we heard the Eggman boss theme for Mania yet? Do we even have a clean rip of Mirage Saloon?

Oh, damn.

I don't ever see it get as heated as Sonic debates though if i'm being honest.

...

I was really disappointed with Galaxy for being full of completely linear missions in what often seemed like retreads of the same old ground if you were looking for another star in the same galaxy. The game seemed confused on whether it wanted to follow the same formula as 64/Sunshine or go for something different and more linear... and honestly, I thought I liked the 64/Sunshine format more. By the time Galaxy 2 rolled around I knew what to expect when jumping in, and it helped that Galaxy 2 never had too many stars in the same galaxy, and also presented a lot more challenge than 1.

Super Paper Mario was a good game, but not what people expected or really wanted after The Thousand-Year Door. I don't understand how Sticker Star and Colour Splash happened unless it was just the devs doing whatever they liked without caring about what the fans like.

>Shadows character peaked in 06
Shadow was shit in everything after Heroes.

Eh, he was fine in 06. The only character in that game that really was fine if i'm being honest, but he was still best in SA2.

>I'm the coolest!

Not to say he's ever been that great of a character outside of the comic.

Just the miniboss theme. There hasn't been any footage of an Eggman boss yet.

Color Splash is a better game than Super Paper Mario.

...

...

How has modern Sonic ever been an asshole?
The only occasions I could think of are his lame jokes to eggman in the games written by Pontac and Graff or that one time he gave Tails a mean look after Tails stated the obvious in Adventure

I never said they were bad. They just feel completely disconnected from the first few games in the series, and the now-over-a-decade-old expectations players had for a followup to TTYD.

Yes he is!

it looks like a fisher price toy

>Mario has kept a fairly cute design while innovating slightly
>Innovating

I don't think you know what that word means

>Mario gets longer limbs and becomes taller
>Mario is Mario
A lot of people like smaller, gruffer classic Mario and don't like the "Mama Mia! Ah spaghetti! Adoopa do dayto!" stuff. I like both personalities about equally (though I like his shorter proportions, which they've actually went back to since 3DL), but it's fair that others prefer one over the other.
>Sonic gets longer limbs and becomes taller
That happened to classic Sonic too, compare these
But with Adventure, his shoes get soles, his hands and feet become bigger, his quills get longer, his torso changes shape, he becomes skinnier, his head gets bigger proportionally, his nose becomes skinny, his iris becomes far more prominent, and changes from brown to green, he starts exuding a lot more snark, and he starts speaking full sentences all the time.

You can prefer the modern takes on the characters if you want to, but it's sillier to pretend Sonic hasn't changed a lot more than Mario than it is to pretend Mario hasn't changed.

...

...

Nah he was shit in Heroes too m8.

I never said he was an asshole though
