Priest is absolute shit at fighting once you get to even ASSaRAM. Wind spells suck ass in 3 and the priest doesn't get enough STR or weapon variety to be worth using for physicals.

Soldier starts good, gets shoddy mid-game, but becomes tight as shit during end-game onward thanks to the magic swords that let you also use firevolt and icespears for free.

Thief is always somewhere around the upper-middle thanks to being able to utilize whips, boomerangs, and claws. May not crit as often as the fighter (and won't crit at all using rangs and whips), but will never be useless at physical.

I know I sound like I'm moving goalposts, but I was thinking purely in terms of the classes themselves. If we talk about class changes, there's a lot more shit to consider, especially for when you get particular equipment and items. Merchant's magic apron is pretty solid when you get it, but far less so further on in.
