Gnasty Gnork felt insulted by the other dragons so he turned them to stone.
Riptoe hated dragons in his realm and wanted to maintain power over the them.
The queen wanted the magic of the dragon eggs so she could remain powerful.
The second game is the best out of them, but I really enjoy the first one too.

Yea, I feel it's the one game that holds up. Crash barely has any physicality to his movement and Spyro, while looking good and having good pacing with different gimmicks, was still an early collectathon platformer.

Honestly? Probably a combination of both. Mostly the latter.
Enter the Dragonfly was so bad. I tried playing it on Dolphin the other day despite hating it as a kid and it's just unplayable. The framerate drops so much in such a short period of time and then rises again. It's a nightmare.
I'd rather take the constant 30fps of the original trilogy to this.
