I made the biggest consumer mistake, Sup Forums. Arcade sticks are so fucking garbage that if you want a decent one then you need to shill out a lot of money for one or two fighting games. It doesn't help if you don't have a scene or tournaments near you.
How many of you have an arcade stick and if you do, why? What's the point?
I've got a few. I like arcade sticks a lot. They feel much nicer to me than a controller and I play a lot of fighting games and even go to tournaments when I can. So for me it's well worth the money.
Asher Williams
Because I enjoy playing fighting games on them, that's literally the only reason I have and the only one I need I feels good to use one when playing them What answer are you looking for?
Jace Martinez
considering I played tekken tag 2 for 1000h i'd say it's worth it
Kevin Mitchell
i bought the expensive SF4 madcatz stick, but I got it for like 70 bucks because the cord was ripped somewhat. But the catch is, it was actually modded and the seller never mentioned, or possibly even knew, so it works on newer consoles
Jack Brown
git gud scrub
Joseph Reyes
Arcade sticks allow me to double tap links in KI and SFV. The feel is just more efficient to me than a controller. Not to mention if a pad breaks down, you have to replace the whole thing, while if a button or lever breaks on a stick, you just replace it.
Landon Reyes
I bought one arcade stick, a hori real arcade pro 2 for ps2, then used it for ps2 fighters, pc fighters, and ps3 fighters until sony killed ps2 to ps3 adapters with a security update.
Then I got a cheap ps3 mad catz stick and put sanwa parts in it.
Sticks are great investments if you think in the long term.
Jackson Garcia
The same reason as any other controller type that people buy. They are comfortable to play on and I enjoy using them.
Also playing some characters on pad is a nightmare so ill stick to my arcade stick.
Christian Clark
>Playing tekken on a stick
Aren't most players Pad anyway?
Justin Young
If they become legal, I might buy a Smashbox. It's apparently really hard to use and some easier stuff becomes harder, but fuck it looks easy to perfect pivot on it.
Noah Perry
Pad is technically superior for Tekken but it's an arcade game at heart so if you ever want to play at the source (i.e. Japanese arcades), you really need to be able to play stick.
Plus, and this is just a personal opinion, playing Tekken on stick is flat-out more fun.
Brayden Davis
tekken started in the arcades and is the biggest in arcades so sticks are standard
Yeah if I continue playing fighting games then I guess that makes sense. Maybe I should shill out for Qanba stuff
No offense but this looks fucking awful. Just play on a fucking regular GC controller
Nolan White
I own 40 or so arcade sticks. I spent my youth playing Street Fighter, MvC, KoF, Tekken and Soul Calibur in my local arcade so playing fighting games or any arcade game on a pad feels fucking terrible and completely unnatural.
Isaiah Harris
I bought one because I thought it would be fun. I was playing a negative edge character at the time and it made playing them easier.
I just need a way to mod it for PS4. I'm sure not buying a new stick.
Jayden King
I have two
The original Madcatz TE I modded with a ps360+ and a Hori VLX
I prefer to use them over a regular controller just because it feels better, also you don't need to use them just for fighting games. I've been playing some shmups I bought during the steam sale with them and it has been working out pretty well.
Ethan Cruz
interesting, thanks
Evan Lee
>I own 40 or so arcade sticks.
Where the fuck do you put all of them?
You don't need to mod, try to get one of those ps3 to ps4 brook super converters.
Michael Wood
I bought a Qanba Dragon and I don't even fucking play fighting games on stick. I just like having controller options, and you know what? Using a stick for a beat em up or a shmup or a platformer or whatever other arcade genre is really fun.
Ian Moore
I keep most of them on shelves in my living room. Some of the old and beaten up ones are in boxes in my attic. I don't play as many fighting games as I used to anymore (I only really play KoFXIV because SFV and MKX suck and I can't get into "anime" fighters) so I'll probably sell all but a few of them at some point in the future.
Aiden Garcia
>Bought a 300$ stick for beat'em ups and shmups
Guess some anons really are filthy rich
Dominic Moore
I don't like the hayabusa trash from hori, sanwa sticks feel so much better. why do those faggots at hori insist on using their inhouse trash in their new sticks.
Gavin Watson
It's called Paypal Credit, user. I don't even have to finish paying it off for another 5 months.
Lucas Carter
what are some good stick maker companies apart from madcatz and hori?
Hunter Young
Eightarc.
Blake Sanchez
Eightarc doesn't do anything anymore, they've been fully absorbed into Qanba. That being said Qanba is fucking amazing this generation.
Razer might not be shit anymore too now that MarkMan is there.
Jaxson Morgan
They're great for when you have some casuals over. Just load up some classic arcade game like metal slug and pass it around.
Justin Hughes
If I generally don't play fighting games that often, and decided I wanted to try out SFV and happen to have disposable income, would you guys recommend also getting a stick with it to learn how to play on that thing, or just stick with a controller to learn a little bit of combat before branching out?
Tyler Wood
Oh I didn't know about that though I don't trust paypal shit
Qanba. I didn't try Razer but it's usually either one of those 3
Dominic Robinson
If you're already used to pad, stick with it. Street Fighter V has piss easy execution anyway so an arcade stick won't help you.
John King
I have one, i don't play fighting games, only shmups.
Jason Stewart
Right now I only own a RAPV to play Killer Instinct with. I'm either going to buy or build a hitbox soon, because I tried playing on my keyboard recently and it generally felt a lot nicer to do motions with buttons rather than a stick.
Lincoln James
what would be a good stick to start out with on ps4 that i could potentially change out the parts for later, and also have the option of using on pc?
i don't play fighting games often, and have no desire to meet anyone irl from the fgc, i just enjoy the arcade feel.
Luke Diaz
Paypal can be an asshole if you have a business but on the consumer end they're pretty fucking amazing. Paypal credit has been fantastic to me. I think Amazon also has some sort of credit service but don't quote me on that I don't know 100%.
Landon Hernandez
>Razer might not be shit anymore too now that MarkMan is there.
Yeah man, like the madcats pad controller he tested and then it turned out utter shit, right?
Do not get a stick unless you plan to play fighting games a lot. There's a learning curve for both it and the game so you may or may not like it
Jacob Ramirez
It's a matter of taste at this point for the most part. Some fighting games have sepcific motions that I'd argue are easier on a stick, like using a down-up charge move while holding onto your back charge for a combo, or sfiv plinking. In general though all controller types work for almost all fighting games, so it would depend on your style and what you're comfortable with.
Jose Howard
>qanba buttons and qanba stick
what the fuck, did everyone stop using sanwa parts?
Lincoln Williams
>pad lmao
MarkMan doesn't give a shit about anything that isn't a stick, and Madcatz arcade sticks SINGLE HANDEDLY carried Madcatz from being one of the shittiest 3rd party peripheral companies to one of the best. Their sticks were always at the worst decent with their higher end stuff being fantastic. All of that shit was spearheaded by MarkMan. And then after he left Madcatz, what happened. He personally helped Qanba design the Dragon which is probably one of the if not the best arcade stick ever made up to this point and the Razer Panthera which is getting good early reviews.
The Qanba Obsidian and Dragon use Sanwa. It's only the Drone and the Crystal that use Qanba parts because they're the budget sticks.
Isaiah Reed
Sanwa is expensive and stick manufacturers love money. You'll only get them in extremely expensive sticks nowadays, otherwise you'll have to buy them and put them in yourself.
Hunter Rogers
i like to play horizontal shooters and fight game and occasionally gundamu
Connor Taylor
>21 fucking buttons
Adrian Thomas
Cool. Thanks for the tips, friends!
Evan Edwards
I have a couple and some parts lying around. I bought an old Hori with a reasonable inhouse stick and crappy inhouse buttons to start with and then built my own from then on because it's a nice intro-to-woodwork project and you couldn't buy anything with a korean stick in it at the time.
Kevin Lopez
Hey guys, I'm sort of in the market for a stick for the Capcom classics and eventually Infinite. Which gate should I get?
Joshua Jones
Square gate. Anything else isn't needed.
Michael Cruz
just make your own you lazy person, they are simple as hell
even making a nice enclosure for it is not very expensive
Nolan Howard
Yeah, that's what I figured. Is there an mechanical benefit or is that just what people are used to using? I saw a video that explained it was manufactured back in the day like that at least partially to save materials.
Grayson Hall
People use octo gate because it's like the Gamecube controller, you can feel every direction so you physically feel when you hit diagonals and know when to stop your motion. That being said that implies you're riding the gate, which is seen by many to be poor form. Square gates have a shorter throw distance and an even consistent input area for each direction. Your inputs are faster and more consistent when you learn how to play on a square gate. Octo gate is basically a crutch.
There are also circle gates which kinda give you some of the benefits of both, combining shorter throw distances with being able to ride the gate, but they're pretty uncommon parts. Harder to find, typically more expensive, and guaranteed if you start using one and you get used to it, you won't be able to use anyone else's stick. You're stuck to that forever unless you want to unlearn circle gate.
Jeremiah Ross
Making your own stick is way more expensive and time consuming if you are not used to make one.
They are used to it but there's isn't any benefit for an octogate either.
Hunter Price
Thank you very much, anons. Getting square for sure.
Christian Martin
I got one for Skullgirls, didn't like how the game played, got into GG instead which I've played more than enough now to warrant the cost. It's a lot more satisfying to use than a pad, you can press/hold any button combination because you are not limited to your thumb so macros are a thing of the past and motion inputs on the stick can be made cleaner than on a d-pad because there is more clarity in what point you are hitting. Also used it for games like Metroid or Shovel Knight.
Logan Hughes
If you're only using your stick to play fighting games you may actually be too stupid to own one
Nathaniel Taylor
Top tier: Building your own stick out of 2 dollars worth of wood because you're a man, not a sissy little baby.
High tier: Buying a cheap pre-built stick with a metal plate for 20-30 dollars, and then just swapping out the parts with sanwa/seimitsu.
Absolute retarded fucking baby tier: Buying a 100-300 dollar arcade stick. Bonus retard points if it doesn't even come with sanwa parts.
Christopher Reed
My only experience with fighting games is ssmb (doesn't count) and the newest mortal kombat. I wanted to like mortal kombat, but I couldn't get a hang of the controls, doing shit like accidentally jumping all the time, so I never got good. I'm thinking of getting the new mvc, along with a fight stick. Got sick of fighting with the controls in MK, so I figure if I get a fight stick I will like the controls more and will have to get good to justify my purchase. I really do want to give fighting games a fair shot, I love 1v1 competitions
Michael Cox
do you have guides for diy sticks
Lincoln Gutierrez
Having a fight stick won't magically make you good. You'll still have to put in a lot of practice online and ideally at locals, but sticks do help if they prove to be your preferred kind of controller. Just keep in mind some of the best fighting game players use standard PS controllers, so it's not mandatory to own a stick to be competitive
William Allen
You build a box and put the parts in it. If you need more in depth explanations about routing and layouts, there are plenty of sites online with that stuff.
Owen Hall
>high tier I'm concerned about the quality of the PCBs. How are they?
Ethan Richardson
I know. Like I said, part of the reason I want one is because if I get one, I will play with it pretty much daily to justify spending that much money for a controller, I'm not rich enough to make such frivolous purchases. I just find it really easy to accidentally input an unintended direction with a dpad or left stick
Luke Murphy
Or did you really just mean get a box and replace all the electronic components?
Joseph Flores
I have SFxT ps3 stick, I just like fighting games, there is no scene at my place but it is really cool to own this thing and play on it at least once a week.
Carter Nguyen
If you don't trust the 5 dollar controller in a cheap box, buy a new one. You're still going to come out miles ahead of any gaymur shit stick in terms of cost and quality.
Connor Hill
Ok
Zachary Anderson
this is ridiculous, you can't even walk with that.
Brandon Hall
reminder that "arcade sticks" are a fucking scam and waste of money to bank on retards who think they are hardcore gamers for using something much more uncomfortable, bulkier, and just disadvantageous shit reminds me of the fucking enfield l85 and how retards still think it's good
Elijah Moore
They grew up in arcades. Watch the videos some other user posted.
Brayden White
for a guy who keeps bragging about this shit you sure didn't put any effort at all. did you even make your own?
Tyler Lewis
>Pad is technically superior for Tekken What makes you say that?
Levi Jackson
>if you want a decent one then you need to shill out a lot of money for one or two fighting games I enjoy them with more than just fighters though >STGs >run & gun's >brawlers/beat 'em up's Basically everything oldschool is made much more comfortable with a stick.
Cameron Sanchez
Sorry you feel that way.
Jackson Parker
I didn't, I went for the replacement route because I wasn't sure if I'd use a stick that much, and if I did, I could always build a bigger controller later. The price of a donor stick was actually cheaper than the parts I'd need to build one.
I have built multiple other controllers for arcade games though, games like IIDX and Pop'n only have the option of paying hundreds of dollars for chink controllers, I built those myself because all you need is a couple of hole saws and some screws.
Christian Jackson
I have a couple of sticks. I really only play Street Fighter and on solar eclipses, I'll play Skullgirls.
Luke Howard
But all those games are better with Seimitsu parts, and sticks are all filled with Sanwa/clone parts.
Luke Evans
Because they are fun, nerd.
Also because I grew up playing games on Arcades so there's a lot of genres that feel completely off on a normal controller. They do overcharge for the pieces of junk, though. Original pieces do stay on peak condition much longer than knock offs, so, pick your poison between overpaying or having to replace the knock offs every 10 days.
Zachary Jones
>not playing on solar and lunar eclipses
Connor Jackson
Sanwa's are all purpose. Seimitsu's are shit, SHIT for fighting games.
I have parts from both, but I need a case for the seimitsu ones. Wish ordering custom cases was as easy and foolproof as ordering all other parts. Also wish ordering custom cases wasn't expensive af, for the price most people charge I'm better off buying a shitty madcatz stick and fitting it with my own parts.
Owen Bailey
I know, I'm a shitter.
I'm really bad at anime fighters.
Aaron Wilson
>bought this for $40 yesterday >been having fun with SFV, performance improved even
Why bother with expensive sticks when you can have fun with ones only a fifth of the price?
James Foster
>Why bother with expensive cars when you can have fun with ones only a fifth of the price? >Why bother with expensive food when you can eat dollar menu items a fifth of the price? >Why bother with toilets when you can poo in the loo?
Kevin Scott
Being wrong probably. Once you go rubbery korean stick you never go back.
Hudson Myers
If one thing this thread proved is that there are sticks with really nice art with best girl on them
Jackson Martinez
But the loo = toilet
David Barnes
user, a loo is a toilet, you fuckdamn retard.
James Hernandez
Comfort/ customization, really. I own the one in your picture, and it's horrid. The joystick quality degrades quickly and it's too small and light.
Thank you for the compliment. I try to change the art up here and there to keep it fresh, even if it's not as good as my previous art.
As much as I love Satsuki, Momo will always be tops.
Andrew Ward
Oh good a stick thread.
I plan on grabbing Sanwa Buttons + Joystick later on down the line for this but how is it out of the box? Would I be better off just saving the extra $20 for a Q1?
Ian Peterson
How easy is it to change the PCB+ Lever stick in a Hori N3-SA?
Hunter Gonzalez
>Would I be better off just saving the extra $20 for a Q1
Yes.
Please do not get a mayflash.
Aaron Ross
I've heard decent things about that stick. I heard it's pretty good out of the box. But an upgrade is always recommended.
Get the Q1 if you wish for a bigger chassis. Because you'd have to upgrade to Sanwa on that stick too.
Hunter Cox
peen size
Andrew Hughes
I'm new to sticks, what do I get
Brayden Scott
Hori VLX
Robert Baker
6
Ryan Garcia
Is there anything decent under 200$?
Chase Sanchez
Get a Hori pro 4
Robert Parker
Is there any place I can get a stick for an Xbox one? Or should I just build my own?
