I feel like every other 3D platformer to come out during the time period (of note, that was "good" was far better than it, even Crash). And I understand this can be attributed to it being the first one but still.

I never liked ALttP even though I grew up with the game and even bought it for GBA, although I did love the Four Swords that came with it like I love every other Zelda, even II. I just never liked the graphics, artstyle, music, story. I didn't like playing that game.

You could not be more wrong. Every game that took after SM64 took after it's worst aspects. They were just colorful worlds with things to collect and the platforming mechanics were just a means to an end. SM64 was the inverse. It was first and foremost designed to be a fun, skillful platformer. That fact that virtually every other 3D platformer from Banjo-Kazooie, Rayman 2, Conker's BFD, Spyro, etc have a hover jump shows how little the developers cared about the actual platforming element and how those games often degenerated into miscellaneous challenges and genres.

SM64 is a real masterpiece and nothing, not even it's successors, have topped it.
