Smash could have two hundred playable characters and you'd still have fags complaining about X not being playable or Y being an assist trophy.

Characters from a single game are only allowed if they're that game's protagonist.

That requires effort, they can't just clone them from old characters or the 2-3 new ones each game.

When will you people learn that characters aren't picked by their potential skill set viability or because they 'deserve' it, but because Nintendo want them in for marketing purposes (a few slots left open for Sakurai)?

Dark Pit was just an alternate costume for Pit they had planned that ended up becoming its own playable character slot as a cheap and easy clone. It's not the same as somebody like Ghirahim who would require a fully unique moveset and ergo much more work and effort.

Zelda.

Sheik just got by in Melee/Brawl because she was apart of Zelda (the titular and second most important character in LoZ) with the transformation gimmick. Once transformations were cut, Sheik was already grandfathered into Smash so she stayed as her own character.

Had transformations not been a thing in the past Smash games, Sheik would of never been playable.

The Corrin reveal literally made me and my friend who have been playing together since 64 quit the game. I'll still never understand what posessed them to put SIX FE CHARACTERS in the fucking game, and two fucking DK characters, one of the greatest sidescrollers of all time, beat out by a weeb dating sim.

Dark Pit is such a lazy character that they really shouldn't have bothered. There is nothing original about him whatsoever, I would rather him not be in the game at all than have to fight him in single player content and unlock him as a "reward". Same goes for Lucina.

Despite what Sakurai has said in the past, I get the feeling the real reason why Dark Pit and Lucina were their own characters was because they needed replacements for some characters they had to cut.

We know Ice Climbers got cut because of technical reasons on the 3DS, and characters like Lucas and Wolf were probably cut from the base roster due to time constraints, so I imagine they took some characters they already had planned as alternate costumes, made them into their slots and quickly changed their stats around as a means of quickly and cheaply filling in some holes on the roster.

In all fairness,, Olimar is one of the most complicated and unorthodox characters in the game, in comparison to how basic and simple Pit, Marth and Mario are. They had to cut a ton of corners with Olimar to make him work on 3DS where he felt barely functional (His Pikmin AI was fucked). I definitely see why DP, Doc and Lucina were prioritized over him.

Not really, no. Nana is just an AI controlled partner. Sheik is actually her own playable character with her own moveset.

Fun fact: Diddy was originally going to be a mixture of the two when he was planned on being paired up with Dixie in Brawl, as a throwback to Donkey Kong Country 2 and the series' tagteam system.

That's because Zelda fans got soiled. There should have not been in increase of 1 (Link) to 5. Melee should have only had 3 Zelda characters

Because all the ressourced had to be spent on emo boys from Fire Emblem Sakurai and other Japs can fap to.

Sakurai has done an exceptionally shitty job with the Zelda side of Smash desu

Its been 15 years now and he's done nothing to rectify any of this

To be fair, all Zelda needs is Link, Zelda, Ganon, and mostly Toon Link. Everyone else is a one off (OP pic), someone who never has a consistent look (Impa), or someone hated by half the world (Tingle). Shiek should be replaced with Toon Zelda, but Meleefags will argue otherwise. The only one left is Epona.
