Originally he was fresh, but now literally a file a dozen. He's also wearing full fledged nostalgia goggles through 90% of his reviews (I guarantee Silent Hill 2 still ranks in his top 10 games), not to mention he never evolved or changed up his formula.

nearly every video is identical and he barely plays anything he "reviews" until he hits something he likes then he spends the whole episode gushing over it.

He said as much himself. I haven't played 99% of the games he reviews, but I know when he says something like MGS4 "requires you to press and hold both shoulder buttons and triangle to aim and fire" he's obviously exaggerating, considering triangle in that game is a toggle between third and first person and not something you actually hold.

I can only assume he does this for everything he reviews.

His favourite game is PoP: Sands of Time
so he has better taste than 90% of Sup Forums

Pretty fun to watch the little cartoons and see/hear him taking the piss out of most popular releases, even if he has to reach a little to find shitty points, but his videos shouldn't be taken as genuine reviews.

Liked him during his early shit when he sounded like he actually played each game he reviewed, then it sort of turned into his joke being "I didn't even finish the game"...which makes me wonder why he even bothered reviewing it. I also notice that he suffers from the same issue lots of reviewers suffer from which is simply not playing the game properly then giving criticism of something that was his own fault.
The best example of this was during his Witcher 3 review where he complains that you can't upgrade your health potions...which is wrong, you can upgrade them, he clearly didn't explore the world enough.
I'm also bored of his "Generic Straight white male" jokes now. He seems to throw it into every review at some stage.

Beyond that I don't take his opinions seriously since he's just a contrarian and nothing more. I don't believe he even plays games much outside of what he needs to for his 'job'.

Such the burden of the popular "video game reviewer". Once people / your bosses start demanding regular reviews, you don't have time to play through an entire 20+ hour game before the next big game is released and you need to upload a review. Most of them barely have the time to burn through the main storyline as fast as possible without taking the time to even look into the nuances of the game world. That's why the whole "video game review" sphere is just a shitshow now. The reviews are expected so suddenly and quickly that they literally can't even be accurate anymore, especially when no reviewer just does one genre or series, and are expected to review EVERY AAA release, which are now being half-assedly pumped out in record time.

I always take this with a BIG grain of salt, especially the way he sort of says them under his breath or as a brief aside that he quickly glosses over. Because he's part of the Escapist, and is locked into that community, this is kind of mandatory, lest the people in that community / his superiors start harassing him for his opinions on this social politics bullshit, A.K.A "You're on our side, RIGHT?", and if the answer is "No", or even "Well..." then he'll get canned in an instant. We all know how "tolerant" those progesssive-types are of opposing viewpoints, and Yahtzee unfortunately is now embedded in that community, and needs their support to stay relevant.

I think that's the point. He whole angle is that he picks out all the worst parts of every game, and showcases those negatives, when most other "reviewers" just gush about the positives in every game they review and desperately suck developer cock. He'll only mention good parts (or parts he liked) of games if they REALLY stand out and he can't ignore them.

Anyway my biggest bugbear with him is that he plays too much western indie garbage. I know he hates RTS and modern JRPGs, and I'm not asking he play anything that would be truly torturous, but it'd be nice if he could touch on some more niche Japanese stuff; he does occasionally, but for every Gravity Rush and I am Setsuna review there are at least 3 indie titles I've never heard before.

The fact that he's more critical makes him a better reviewer. Video games won't improve unless they're held under the fullest scrutiny and have all their flaws exposed and derided rather than glossed over (something cancerous cretins like "Angry Joe" Vargas and Jim Sterling are wont to do). This is all things he has said himself and I fully agree with it.
