Depends. The gameplay has always been just kind of decent. But everything related to presentation, such as the story, characters and atmosphere is top notch, with the possible exception of Blood Omen 2.

It survived the test of time and remains a fun game; now kill yourself in the past to make your current self stronger.

Not worth it. You spend so much fucking time pushing boxes. That's the main puzzle of Soul Reaver especially.

And the thing is, at this point, you'll know the answer immediately, so there's no challenge, only wasted time.

SR1's block puzzles are tolerable if only because they feel appropriate for its age. SR2's puzzles, and everything about that game in general except for its story, are a total drag. It's the only game I have difficulty replaying, and I'd skip it completely if it wasn't for the quality of the story.

Defiance is pretty good all round, even if its gameplay is a watered down DMC and its story is hampered somewhat by its attempts to accomodate BO2's terrible plot.

No, but I highly recommend you play Blood Omen first as it is the prequel to Soul Reaver and the first game in the seires. It sets up Kain as a character where he plays the "villain" in Soul Reaver. They are both drastically different games though, Blood Omen is more a LoZ-esque game. It's very fun to just listen to Kain's monologue's. Playing the games in release order will let you appreciate the stories more, and since this series is all about story / characters / dialogue / voice acting I highly recommend you DO NOT play them outside of release order.

I can get why he was pretty upset for most of his life, though. Poor dude was fucked the moment he was conceived into his mother's womb. He felt cheated and robbed of his true legacy and I kinda felt bad for him until Defiance, when he finally gets cured.

I wonder how he would have been in The Dark Prophecy, the direct cancelled sequel to Defiance. Maybe they would have softened him a bit, considering his arrogance was also born out of Nupraptor's curse.

It sucks that SR1 had so much content cut, but it's what made the game so memorable to me when I first played it.

There's so many completely optional areas that you can find by accident. I stumbled upon the lighthouse area as a kid, then couldn't find it again, and for years I thought I'd dreamed it.

And when Raziel basically impales himself on the Soul Reaver, he's actually fucking flabbergasted and despairs that the guy he threw into hell ended up being his only friend. Only for his only loyal freind to die and his soul empower the Soul Reaver. Kain sounds like he's about to start screaming in horror when Raziel impales himself on the sword.

Fuck, I love the voice actors of the Legacy of Kain series.
