Dragon Quest VII thread

I just beat the island with Alltrades Abby on it, but when I return to it those fucking bandits kick my ass. I guess I need to grind a bit more.

Also, where the fuck do the monsters I recruit go? I've had like three I sent to the Meadows, but I can't find them there.

Bump.

Anyone know if old downloadable maps will come back at any point also. I can't download anymore cause it says I'm out of space is that cause of the game or SD card?

The monsters don't show up until after the big thing happens. You'll know what it is, but it's a fair bit later. I don't know about maps.

I lost interest in this game as soon as I learned my boy Kiefer doesn't rejoin.

At that point you should be leveling professions and such. After you've gotten a couple under you belt and your team ready again they'll pose no problem.

I was thinking of emulating the gameboy monster games. I remember I played the 2nd one a long time ago, should I emulate the first one or just the 2nd one?

Was there a fan translation of this or is it only an official "translation"

Think the most it got was a music patch, if that. There was a group working on it, but Square hit them with a C&D.

Remember looking forward to it back when it didn't appear we would ever get it (or VIII) in the west on 3DS.

There's a fan translation of the Terry's Wonderland remake on 3DS floating around if you happened to have a 3DS with CFW.

Just have to install the game cia, then the update after, works perfectly.

Fucking terrible. Guess I'll play the playstation version when I get around to this game then.

I don't have a hacked 3DS because I'm a lazy fuck, and I'm retarded and fear I would somehow brick my 3DS if I tried to hack it.

Wot's dat? You donnae lik teh localized ac'ents?

I unironically like the accents, but then again I also like all of the shitty pun names.

The PS1 version is worse in many aspects, and I say that as someone who loves VII. The pacing is shit, the translation isn't any better.

Not hacked mime yet, I like to support things until they're officially dead then pick up what I missed afterwards, but I know a few who've hacked theirs recently. Apparently it's gotten so easy they could do it in a couple of hours.

If it looks like Nintendo is dumping all their support into the Switch and the 3DS goes a while without any major releases/announcements, I may join them sooner than later.

>the translation isn't any better.
It wasn't too bad. Just..sorta stiff.

Should I emulate VIII on PCX2 or should I wait until the 3DS version gets localized later this month?

I'm thinking of waiting for maximum comfy but I know the PS2 version looks so much better.

I prefer having my JRPGs portable, but it's up to you.

Not that it was bad, but they're both on equal level with each other. Both have their charms, though the accents do get a bit annoying, the humor and such is retained better in the 3DS version.

If visuals are your concern, play the PS2 version. Having already played it as well, I'm simply looking forward to the additional features of the 3DS version at this point.

I can take that at least. A stiff, wooden translation is still preferable to replacing every name with a retarded pun and forcing in accents from all over Earth.

Level the Shepherd job a bit, you can put them to sleep really easily.

I guess. I don't mind the new translations. For the most part.

I can understand that.

Does using the monster munchies in battle give you a higher chance of taming the monster?

I don't think so but if you the Monster Masher's Animal Magnetism ability five times on a monster it's pretty much guaranteed.

what features do they add?

Red and Morrie are new party members, new ending, quicker alchemy, new voice segments (so new VAs), and you can marry Jessica.

How can I get more monster hearts? Are they just a rare drop?

And a new post-game dungeon.

Whats the point of Aishe? She comes way to late to hope to get an advanced class
Youre likely to already have advanced classes for hero, ruff, maribel, and almost mervyn
But shes so far behind to the point of feeling useless

They have a higher drop rate in the tablet maps you do at the monster town.

You can dump her before the last dungeon, at least.

So should I emulate DQM1 or 2? Or both?

I thought 2 would be just a upgrade to 1, how different are the games?

Honestly don't remember, it's been years since I played them, but they weren't really long games.

First one is a lot more random, playing a bit like a roguelike with randomized dungeons.

Second game obviously has more depth and shit to do, but the game is more linear and coherent. Also notably a lot easier as well. There are lots of random keys to magical worlds however.

So switch version of DQXI will you guys be getting? I'll probably get 3DS or the Switch version if it comes out on that.

If on Switch in time, it and 3DS, if not PS4 and 3DS.

Won't be localized until 2019 so I'm not worried about it right now

PS4. I doubt I'll get a Switch and I really liked the style and scope of 8 due to it being on a home console.

The quicker alchemy alone should be enough to tie everyone in. Fuck that shit in the PS2 version.

that animation of the jar shaking haunts me to this very day.

Maribel a cute

This thread needs more Slimes

Maribel a bitch.

Ruff a cute!

She's not a bitch, she's just a... erm... brat-dere?

Besides, "press B to receive a sick burn" was hilarious all the way through the game.

Wouldn't Maribel just be a Tsundere?

But I agree, her burns were great. But she's more smug than cute.

Dragon Quest threads never live for very long

What's your favorite type of slime?

I've always loved slime knights.

How do you recruit the monsters anyway? I haven't even recruited one yet.

Also, if you want to beat the bandits, just grind your jobs a bit more. What jobs do you have? If you've got a mage along with you, spam frizzle, preferably on the thief first, then the tin-pot dictator clone, then the zombie and last the knight.

Equip an edge boomerang on one of your party members too, maybe even using focus strength beforehand. Use the "rude awakening" ability if anyone is confused or asleep.

As for me, I'm just past the point of beating the bandits' boss and I'm at the desert island. Something called Al balad or whatever.

Dragon Quest just isn't very popular. Final Fantasy threads get all the attention.

They randomly just stick around after a battle and you send them to the monster corral. I guess there's a skill you can use that makes it more likely but I never used that class personally.

Is there any point to the monsters? What do I gain from recruiting them?

The Switch version. I might double dip with the 3DS version if it's different enough.

Alltrades Abbey was a major pain in the ass. I didn't think a lack of magic would really impact the difficulty that much. That boss battle with the pig and cat was difficult. I even died against the ring leader of the Alltrades Abbey tournament.

I'm at the end of the game I don't even know. Admittedly, I haven't used any of the monster classes so I'm probably missing something. You go to the place and they're just kinda hanging around little themed plots that get built.

I don't think Maribel would qualify as any type of dere since that would require her to show her affectionate side when all she really had were 2 or 3 moments of very vaguely implying that she somewhat cared about the MC.

Thanks for telling me, now I don't feel so bad about nothing recruiting them.

I don't understand, why is Maribel called your "friend"?

Dragon Quest VII 3DS is the first game I've played in the series. So, this is what the franchise is like. Seems like it hasn't changed all that much in comparison to Final Fantasy, which I kind of like.

I'm glad they kept the job system and didn't discard it so willingly. Also digging the turn based combat. A bit put off by some of the features they've kept in, like only being able to save at alters, and having to resurrect and cure poison at alters for a good chunk of the game until the appropriate items appear. Don't get me wrong, I get it, it's tradition and that's what the Dragon Quest franchise is known for. That's a big part of why I like it. It's just that some of this stuff is a bit tedious to work around.

>early resurrection spell only has a "chance" to resurrect

I feel ya.

Oh shit, you mean it's percentage based? Jesus, it's like those healing spells in the early Fire Emblem games. Fuck that shit!

I haven't gotten that far so I didn't know. Is it at least a 99% success rate like Fire Emblem? Or does it miss often?

I think the first one is 50/50. You get a proper one later on, but you get it from a secondary job.

Jesus. Do you at least get to buy items that can resurrect you by that point or are you reliant on that entirely?

Also, if I may say, I love how the characters are put in coffins. It's the little things like that, the little details that make this franchise so great.

There are items, but I'm not certain if you can buy them. You do find a number of them, they're yggdrasil leaves.

You can quick save if you need to, you know. Also you get spells later on that can revive and cure stuff like poison and curses.

I found a few in Alltrades Abbey, just can't buy em though.

I tried quick saving before, but it said something like "you can't save here asshole". Where are you typically allowed to quick save?

You can usually quicksave unless you're right in the middle of some cutscene or plot important stuff. I'm pretty sure you can always quicksave on the overworld map.

Alright, I'll try in the overworld.

I just finished Al Balad, how far am I through the game? Do I have enough time to finish DQ7 before 8 comes out?

Man, this game is long.

I'm not sure if it was before or after the Abbey but when you get to the yggdrasil tree you can get unlimited leaves, but you can only grab one at a time

you still got a good 40-30 hours ahead of you, but VIII comes out at the end of the month so yeah you have more than enough time.

Oh no wait, I'm getting things confused with DQ4

Unless you play less than an hour a day, yes

me on the other hand though
>addicted to Builders
>can't stop playing
>probably will play it until end of month

Also fuck this Gold Ring in chapter 3 I've blasted the whole area but still can't find it

PS4 and 3DS. Will play the former first.
