II

Should I play the Turbo Grafx CD version or Chronicles first?

Chronicles if only because it's newer.

The TG-CD version of Ys 1 and 2 is REALLY good though. And it's the only version of 1 and 2 that treats them as one whole game(Like it was supposed to be) As opposed to two separate ones. At least listen to it's OST.

I've only played the chronicles version, but it was still a lot of fun.
the combat takes a good bit of practice to get used to though, but the game and boss design is still amazing.

Are there any significant gameplay improvements in the newer one? I much prefer the older ones soundtrack from what I've listened to so far.

Well. Not really no. Nothing truly significant.

Whats so good about it?

Are you supposed to dodge each boss for 10+ minutes while slowly whittling down their HP one point at a time, or are you supposed to be strong enough to deal some serious damage? Each level-up is such a big deal in this game and I think it's theoretically possible to win without levelling at all so I'm worried I'll ruin the game for myself if I level up outside of boss fights. The most efficient strategy would be to spend >20 minutes grinding for each boss fight since I suck at video games but that might be less fun. I have some obsessive-compulsive tendencies so there's no middle ground. What do you guys recommend?

I use my own judgement usually. Like if I'm dealing so little damage that the fight just isn't enjoyable then I grind up a level and try again.

Ys is usually one of those of the games where even a single level is a big-deal yes.

Also don't forget your weapons and armors and such. That's also a big deal.

"It did everything right" but that's a cop-out answer

So,
>Perfected the bump formula
>GREAT dialogue, characterized and built up the villains well (MoC ruined this so hard it's unbelievable)
>Boss fights are so good you wouldn't believe they're from 1993, I'd say only Origin's rival them
>Difficulty is challenging but fair
>Fireball bosses are ACTUALLY fun
>Best Dogi wallcrush scene in the whole series

overall it's just a really special experience

Is Ys 3 worth playing?

Complete's soundtrack is the best one, though

I bought Oath of Felghana during a Steam sale years ago and played it.

It was shit.

Man, I actually really enjoyed MoC but I'll give this one a try to hold me off until 8 gets localized.
I'd say it is. It's good dumb fun, only 2-3 hours long and the soundtrack is one of the series best.

I assume you mean the original Ys 3.

It's alright I guess. Not really bad.

Why do people prefer Felghana when Origins has better boss fights and music?

The PC-88 soundtrack has a real kick to it though.

>when Origins has better boss fights and music?
Because that part isn't true.

*pats you on the head*

that's nice, run along now

can I play this on PC, I can't find any torrents and read that there are 3 versions of the game. not sure if I was reading wrong, but I got confused with how many remakes they made. sorry for asking to be spoonfed

MoC is fine; even though it's objectively the worst version of 4 it's still an ok game
Hell, even Mask of the Sun did everything better

But Dawn is just the best Ys gets
I don't have it on hand, but make sure to look for that English dub patch wherein the actors made it sound like a really hammy early 90s dub job, because it really completes the experience

VIII is almost as good, though
Just like Dawn perfected bump, VIII perfected the party system, so Ys IX is probably going to start over with something totally different

youtube.com/watch?v=z3VSYWmbJFg

this is lit my white homeboy

Name a single boss from Felghana that compares to the Schythe Mantis or Zava.

Hey, I don't like MoC that much but there's no way Mask of the Sun did anything better.

If you emulate.

There's three versions of Ys 4. One for the Vita the one you just replied to and the Snes one.

The Snes one is the least liked of the three.

I liked the music and bosses in oath better.

Was the Ys anime good?

How did VIII perfect the party system?

Dawn of Ys really trashes on Celceta in my opinion, in terms of music, story setting and Lore.

There's an OVA for Ys 1 and another for Ys 2. Ys 1's is fun and faithful right up until Dark Fact starts having regrets and asks Adol to kill him. Ys 2's wasn't faithful enough for my liking, which was stupid because there was no reason to change around half the shit, but it's only 4 episodes so what you gonna do.

You're fine user, it actually is sort of confusing

When Falcom made 4 they outsourced the plot and etc to two different devs who made their own versions on the game on two different platforms
Mask of the Sun was on the SNES and plot-wise was closer to what they intended, so that one was considered canon for the next 19 years
Dawn of Ys, though, they just went absolutely nuts and went overboard with everything, putting it on the PC Engine so it looked butt-ugly but sounded decades ahead of its time

As mentioned earlier there's an English text patch AND a completed dub as of 2012 floating around the internet for Dawn, which is the one you want
Memories of Celceta is the newer remake, using a completely different system and is all-around not as good

The entire Iris segment was so much better in Mask than in Celceta, you don't even know

They added a jump button.
That's not the only change, but it's shocking how big of a difference it made
Flash guard/move are a lot tighter too
Mostly just a bunch of subtle tweaks that came together to make it a lot more fun than the last two

awesome, thank you.

So are any of the more recent Ys's good? They look really generic now honestly.

What other ARPG gameplay style could Ys do without compromising the high speed action the series is known for? Something like Kingdom Hearts II?

>As mentioned earlier there's an English text patch AND a completed dub as of 2012 floating around the internet for Dawn, which is the one you want
nice, I'll have to look a bit harder then.

They're really all good. VII might be a bit rough around the edges but MoC and especially VIII make the combat a lot more fluid. Bosses are still as great as ever especially on Nightmare.

Third-person shooter where Adol's sword fires lasers

alt: shmup

Ys Seven and it's skill system except Solo-Adol the whole way through.

Also reminder the most Not-Ys clone of all time's Snes version got translated.

Is it a a meme to say that is the best one? Has anyone on here actually played any of the others?

GOD TIER
Ys II
Dawn of Ys
Oath in Felghana
VIII
HIGH TIER
Ys I
Origins
Memories of Celceta
MID TIER
Seven
LOW TIER
V
VI

The rest are all rather irrelevant desu

Pretty much everyone that enjoyed Felghana went and played the others.

there are a lot of great games in the series. I can see why someone would pick it as their favorite, but it's not mine.

> implying it isn't Origins

I did like Chester and Elena though. Shame he crashed Genos Island with no survivors.

Origins level design was ass though. Only the bosses were good.

Chester's second fight is still one of my favorite duel fights in videogames.

post kickass Ys songs

...

What did she mean by this?

Where the fuck is Dogi? Don't tell me he gets shafted like he did in Seven.

He's in 8.

In a different role.

>play Oath when it comes out
>soundtrack is amazing, only slightly inferior to Ys III's
>play MoC
>soundtrack is massively worse than Dawn of Ys'
Why?

>only slightly inferior to Ys III
I dunno man, Strongest Foe and Chop trash on Ys 3

Mask of the Sun was shit for forcing me to grind for a third of the game's total length just to be able to damage a boss.

He's there, but VIII takes place on an island without as many walls as usual and he's not happy about it

man i'm scared that ys viii will be ps4 exclusive in the west like how cs3 turned ps4 exclusive.
i won't buy a ps4 since i prefer playing on the go.

Playing Ys Origin for the first time. Should I use my SP on my current armor or save it for something? Currently going through Devil Corridor.

MoC's remixes aren't too good. Yeah.

Chester's second fight is amazing.

I love me some Felghana.

>tfw never got to finishing Ys
I played Chronicles(I & II), Felghana, Celceta, and Napishtim. The only one I haven't done in Nightmare is the first one. I must say that I've liked them all so far, but it took me a while to get into Napishtim, but it was fun after the duel.

Whats the hardest game in the series?

>Mighty Obstacle 1:11
>Valestein Castle
Call me a fag, but I want to play Ys VIII before listening to it.

That's understandable.

I'd like to know this too. I thought Ys 1 was hard, but that was the first one that I played, fuck the bats and Dark Fact holy shit . The easiest so far for me has definitely been Ys II with MoC coming as a close second.

Is Ys VIII worth importing or should I just wait for another 2 years

Learn moon for two years. Import it anyway.

Ys I because of how fucking cancerous Vagullion and Dark Fact are. It's a lot shorter than the other games in its ballpark.

are you getting wrecked by attacks? yes, get new armor; no save it.

At least Dark Fact's fight is over in 10 seconds, win or lose. Bat Nigger has you running around for 5 minutes while you pray that a stray bat doesn't nick you and swipe off half your health.

>MoC
>No Field remix

Oh well..

youtube.com/watch?v=X9tOVQULRqc

Bat Nigger was easy as fuck, it's just a matter of getting the hang of how to manipulate the bat swarm.

No, the real motherfucker are these two assholes. These two are the bitch and a half to beat.

The fight gets easier as time goes on though.

problem is dealing with the DPS race, I feel every time I beat them that it was mostly luck.

>Adol's Theme is a melacholic song now
>Sea of Trees, Lefance and Dark Temptation lack their kick
>No Karna or Leeza theme
>Leo downgraded from a powerful and threatening fool and his theme became a gag theme
I swear the PCE, released in 1993 had many more songs.

>No Karna
Now that was some proper fucking bullshit right there. She had one of the best themes in Dawn.

you can say that again. Even if it's one of the more chiptuney songs.
youtube.com/watch?v=gZzlpTBVKh0

I swear, it's odd to have half the song be chiptunes like this:
youtube.com/watch?v=45XIsCJ4k50
and the other half be full songs complete with guitar and violin tracks like this
youtube.com/watch?v=5rry287yKMY

At least the Chiptunes are nice.

youtube.com/watch?v=QJ3PHxrZUWg

That's just space limitations for you. It's pretty obvious that they wanted to use something like what showed up on the Perfect Collection, but you can't fit all of that music on a 700 MB CD.

What a genuinely horrible list.

Oath > Origins > Lacrimosa > Seven > Memories of Celceta > Ark of Napishtim > II > I > Sands of Whatever

Non canon games need not apply.

And they worked very well with their limitations.
youtube.com/watch?v=X98h0h9vg14

It kinda shows how much it hurts them to go down from the PCE audio capabilities to the SNES on Ys V.

They tried something..different for Ys V. I won't say it's bad. But. Not very Ys-like.

I've only played Origin what would be the best follow up for it?

I'm think either Ark of Napishtim or Oath in Felghana

Yeah, it's not bad, but "Final Fantasy" just comes to my mind whenver I hear it.

youtube.com/watch?v=yHBfmNpMLok
youtube.com/watch?v=AASleixtEIA

>Inventory has a dedicated slot for the water stone
>you never get it in the whole game
My OCD was triggered beyond my own expectations.

I only played ys origin. I don't know what I was expecting but it was like a platformer that was also a bullet hell game. are all of the non-bump attack games like this?

Only Origins, Oath and Napishtim. Only I, II and Dawn are Bumpcars. Seven, VIII and Celceta follow a different, party-based battle system. V is a very early version of the platformer games but it's not very good.

Somewhat. The other two games like Origin. Oath and Napishtim are like that.

Reminder that Ernst decided to go after a stupid weather control device and get his shit wrecked by Adol instead of staying home tapping this ass all day.

he was tapping triple fairy ass, though.

What a fool.

Oath=Origin>Ark>Seven>Celceta>2>1>V

so are the new ones normal rpgs like trails in the sky? or are they still action games too?

steamcommunity.com/id/joyoland/myworkshopfiles/?section=greenlight
Could the chinks pair up with XSEED?

Very much action games. Picture they're like Origins, but instead you have two dudes running around with you, everyone pulls flashy skills for damage, everything (yourself included) deals and takes much more damage and you can heal anywhere anytime.

It's far easier

no, their ports are shit.

Yeah Ys V's soundtrack was pretty standard JRPG fare for the time. It was really good JRPG standard, but still.

The game itself is just kinda bland and boring.
