>in 2005 we had 75v75 player matches on huge maps with loads of vehicles
>in 2016 we have 32v32 player matches on small maps with some vehicles

what the fuck happened?

the requirements of the video games simply outpaced the rate at which consumers could upgrade their hardware

this

old games looked like shit so it was possible to have a bunch of actors on the same screen without a normal rig instantly dying.

Except Battlefield 1 is "state of the art" with its 32v32 player matches with limited vehicles, when in 2005 a mid-rate dev popped out a 75v75 player shooter with loads of vehicles.

So the modern industry couldn't give a shit about quality or fun as long as they can have good graphics?

The matchmaking meme. It severely damaged TF2, it ruined League of Legends and Overwatch from release.

This is why devs need to start using less polygons and unnecessary filters and effects. Good textures and art can make up for a lot.

>Except Battlefield 1 is "state of the art" with its 32v32 player matches with limited vehicles, when in 2005 a mid-rate dev popped out a 75v75 player shooter with loads of vehicles.

And back in the day, your typical player could actually a afford a rig to play the latter.

>So the modern industry couldn't give a shit about quality or fun as long as they can have good graphics?
Partly. But don't forget that the physics engines and other things we typically take for granted also take a huge toll on the PC or whatever you're using for your vidya.

On that note, what did Sup Forums think of this game? I never got the chance to try it out.

>tfw you forget the picture and you realize it the second you hit submit

Joint Ops: Typhoon Rising

So basically a lot of dev time is going to unnecessary shit that most people wont notice or care about so the companies can measure technodicks?

matchmaking is a good thing though. you ever try getting more than 3 people on a team in tf2?

Modern programming parlance discourage efficiency at the server-side in lieu of ease of programming.
Web servers solved the 10,000 user problem decades ago, and it's only possible when your whole network stack is written in C/C++.

Most game devs aren't even real programmers, so it's a lack of talent, and a lack of demand.
Nobody is asking for games where you can have 100 simultaneous connections, let alone 10,000.

>So basically a lot of dev time is going to unnecessary shit that most people wont notice or care about so the companies can measure technodicks?

Again partly. But this time it's because retarded normies actually think a game needs pretty graphics and "big technodicks" to be good.

It's more matchmaking meme and "MLGfags" than tech.

COD4 you could do 32v232 on their tiny ass maps, it was insane and fun. But there's no MLG faggy glory in that kind of chaotic madd hellfire. No chance to do some 360 noscope montages.

GRAPHICS

everything has to be super realistic even if it means gameplay takes a hit considering graphics is the thing that makes all the normal people get interested in a game

Server browser is superior
Sort by highest pop, favorite map, favorite mode, etc

So normies don't care is what your saying, and even if they did the modern devs couldn't do it? Makes sense. 32 players is enough stimulation for a weed-poisoned faggot.

I mean I get that these companies COULD do 32v32 or above, but why don't they? I get that on some CoD maps they're simply too small to accompany 150 players, but games like Battlefield should be able too, since they're trying to emulate an actual war. Is this also tied to "graphics more important than fun" trend?

Again we have a game more than a decade old having 150 player matches with admittedly bad graphics for now but games with mediocre to good graphics today not even able to hold HALF of the other game.

uh we still have lots of games that have that many people playing

what happened is most people don't play those games and instead go for the smaller deathmatch style games

its like mcdonalds sells healthy food but people rarely ever buy it and then people complain fast food is all junk food

75 vs 75 games are fucking chaos, it's hard to really do shit in that game approaching some type of skill

you kill one person and next thing you know 30 enemies have you targeted

Please tell me what games support 150 player matches because i need the fix again

Only on small maps, on Joint Ops the maps were so big you didnt have that concern unless you were near capture points, which you also had your army backing you up too. Like I said, 75v75 would never work on CoD because the maps are so small.

Sounds like you never played Planetside 2

Planetside 2 is shit, though.
