The only thing that registers the collision is when the "sides" of 2 hitboxes collide.
In a lot of games going from walking to swimming works that way as well. The only thing that toggles swimming is actually entering a water interface, not technically being in water.
God of war II speedrun use that pretty well by going OOB while swimming and being able to swim in the air (because the character never technically got out of water through an interface)
