Was it really that bad?

Was it really that bad?

its the worst in the series imo but can still be fun just like any other game

As someone who got 101%, yes. It deserves all the criticism it gets.

well it took the collectathon aspect of banjo kazooie but whereas BK's jiggies were actually well diversified and had interesting little stories around them a bunch of the golden bananas and other items you have to collect in DK64 are utterly formulaic, just buttons labeled with what character to use, so it feels more like a repetitive grind
also it's glitchy as fuck (see speedruns)

The criticism about the backtracking and collectathon is accurate, but this did not make the game bad. It definitely hurt it though.

I liked it 17 years ago.
But went back to it and started a new game recently. Quit before I even made it to jungle japes.

No. Played it around a year ago. Still a great game.

No.
Is a great game if you like collectathons.

FINALLY, HE'S HERE FOR YOU

Nah. Pretty great. I fucking love collectathons.

good game, but bloated and slow

Yes.

even that enemiy is a color-coded collectable

I want a sequel to DK64, preferably with all the mistakes corrected. The bosses were great, exploration was wonderful, levels all had charm to them. Only bad thing was too much collectathon. Also shame they started to just reuse bosses near the end.

such fond memories. the first game i completed 100%.
rush if feel goid nostalgia thinking about the forest level and trying my hardest beating that rabbit.

why was tiny kong giventhe hardest boss?

Why is DK there anyways, he should only be on the lighthouse.

No, it's actually much worse.

This game feels more an attempt to cash in the trend of 3D platform games than an honest attempt at making a good DK game to keep the Country styled games going.

Conker was better.

>conker is better

Not even the same genre. DK is a collectathon and Conker is an adventure-platformer.

Hencewhy Conker is the best game of it's gen.

[spoiler still love DK64 though[/spoiler]

And that's what I mentioned Conker, because its style would be better suited for a DK game than what we got.

It would probably be massively improved if you could switch characters on the fly like in the SNES games. Or maybe just make it so it doesn't have color coded fucking bananas

Conker feels like an assortment of minigames.

>Conker
>Best of its gen

Conker is good but this here is leagues ahead of it.

Having to decided between dk64 or this for Christmas '99. I chose DK and didn't regret it. Especially since JFG went on sale for $15 the following summer at target.

HE'S THE FIRST MEMBER

They had the base for a fun 3d action-platformer game, instead they chose to make a fucking autism collection game, filled with awful minigames and tons of backtracking.

OF THE NUTSHACK CREW

perfecat dark i the best rareware game

ebin

>massive singleplayer game
>huge amounts of collectables, content, unlockables
>alternative singleplayer modes: boss arenas, animal challenges
>full 4-player couch splitscreen multiplayer, multiple levels, modes
>jetpac classic in the game
>original donkey kong in the game

its a good game

This is the game that made me realize that purple is an excellent color for a banana.

I'm sticking with that opinion.

Don't even try to argue it.

This fucking image man.

As someone who likes this game...
I feel like this single image summarizes all the problems with it, which I guess was your intention.
You need 3 different kongs just for that section - Chunky for the pad, Tiny for the balloon, and diddy for the enemy. It shows the bad gimmicks of the pads and the horrible textures of the surroundings.
All it's really missing is that barrel mini-game were you herd those fucking squirrel thingies.
