also there's the theory that the secret Brador was keeping was actually "Brador's Testimony" which is the cleric beast horns which might be Laurence's the first cleric beast. The theory goes that Laurence was the first one to ever go beast because of the old blood and Brador witnessed it and killed Laurence so the church imprisoned him to cover it up, eventually the scourge happened anyway though.

They experimented on the body of what was essentially a god. There's probably nothing worse or more taboo in the Bloodborne world. Sure, following that they did all sorts of awful shit to children and entire towns, but the point was that experimenting on Kos was their original sin. It was the peak of their early atrocities.
I'm still confused as to what the Orphan of Kos is though. Is it genuinely her child or some guy (because it looks pretty human) who was transformed into that thing via experimentation?

yeah the church had created a narrative that they were the good guys who try to stop the scourge and heal people, basically Ludwig armed the general populace to participate in the hunts, they basically made the victims of a disease they spread the bad guys (the beasts). People were fearful of their power all the same though.

The hunters as a group of normal people working for the church and the physical hunter's workshop that you find in the church predates the curse.
it was the byrgenwerth hunters who are the precursor to the church, well those that went with Laurence after the split with Willem. Maria and Gehrman are the only two we know for sure participated in the fishing village massacre. Laurence was probably there as well though.

Well we know the old blood and the scourge had destroyed previous civilizations like Loran and the Pthumerians. Still it sounds like hunters as they are known in Yharnam weren't formed until after Laurence started passing out the Old Blood. When they raided the fishing village they were basically students and scholars committing massacre in the name of science and progress.
