>32 bit
First generation 3d consoles were all shit

The console was great, only thing they could have done is better hardware for 3D. Burning Rangers at times run like 10 fps during boss fights which made them annoying as shit.
Other then that Saturn was success in Japan and thanks to Bernie and poor Europe it seems like the console was bad or inferior to PS1.
Oh, also longer lifespan could be good too, same goes for Dreamcast

Better games
Better hardware
Better price
Better controller

The head of Sega of America not being Bernie Stolar

>What could have went better?

Sega of Japan could've let Sega of America do their jobs and launch it right.

Also, hardware concept is fucked.

This and git rid of SoJ.
3/10. Made me reply since I was slightly rustled.

>Better controller
But they already released Saturn 3D pad which is the best controller made by far.

probably tell people it was coming instead of dumping a $400 machine in stores under the cover of darkness.

It was all over when SoJ stepped hard on Tom Kalinske's toes.

too many VNs

it had good hardware.
it just had like 20 confusing dumbass chipsets.

Sony not entering the market with a substantially better product at the same time.

>it had good hardware.

It was pretty much a beefed up 32x...

Not doing a surprise launch with a huge price point and no games that pissed off every major retailer.

I hate you so much neo/v/.

So beautiful damn. I love this design.

Not over engineering the fucking thing. Didn't this have 4 gpus?

I didn't say it had bad hardware, what I meant more optimized for 3D games like Burning Rangers.
But the best thing Saturn did was the laser and sound card.

Yeah, it's a shame the prototype was never released, looked much better in silver then the regular gray model 1

This x 1000. I will never not be mad that Lunar and Grandia never got overseas saturn releases because of this jew nosed prick

Not even kidding, but I never heard about dreamcast until i played it at cousins house.

>

"One very fast central processor would be preferable. I don't think all programmers have the ability to program two CPUs—most can only get about one-and-a-half times the speed you can get from one SH-2. I think that only 1 in 100 programmers are good enough to get this kind of speed [nearly double] out of the Saturn."
—Yu Suzuki reflecting upon Saturn Virtua Fighter development.

Even Yu Suzuki hated the thing.

That's because you probably wernt born yet.

It only had two. It did have 8 processors though.
They definitely could've made developing games way easier by making it simpler.

The fact that they thought it was a good idea twice is even more baffling.

All the major points on what could have gone better have been hit on, but I just want to say that I think the industry is worse off for having Sega out of the hardware picture.

They were forward thinking with online. They were forward thinking with digital purchases [Sega Channel]. They were forward thinking with optical media. They were forward thinking with console industrial design. They were forward thinking with streamlining the development environment using PC hardware.

Localisations.

>They were forward thinking with digital purchases [Sega Channel].
I think that how you think Sega Channel worked is wrong.

The other points come from their arcade divisions and not their consoles.

Yeah I bet you've never heard of the Neo Geo Pocket or the 3DO neither. Underage reeeeeeee

focus more on 3D since that's all most people cared about at the time
don't get run by braindead, spiteful neanderthals in SoJ that put merely braindead neanderthals in charge of SoA
come up with a marketing gimmick as good as Segata Sanshiro for the west

It's funny, everything I can think of that would improve the Saturn hardware-wise just boils down to turning into a PS1.

Why do we need two GPUs? VDP2 is barely used and mostly wasted, plus keeping it separate from VDP1 means alpha effects are mostly fucked. Quad primatives instead of tris is dumb too.
Dual SH-2 CPUs is dumb, just have one CPU and a fast coprocessor for the 3D maths.

The isolated CD subsystem is good though, make it easy to pirate 20 years later

If i wasn't born, how could I play it?

I was just thinking about this earlier today. The innovation was there and they just figured out how to do shit nobody else was doing. I can't explain how fucking rad Sega channel was.

If sega of Japan and sega of America could have just talked.
They would not be making the 32X and the Saturn at the same time. Instead just working on one of the two to make an easier to program for and better performance.
Instead of making all fans mad with the 32X lasting only like a year.... and the Saturn's 2 cores hard to program for(well the whole thing was hard to work with...)...

as for 3D. nothing did that well compared to the stuff we have now.. looked awesome at the time tho. but not today.

Same, didn't know it existed until 2002 when I got Sonic Adventure 2 on my gamecube and found out it was a port.

>Quad primatives instead of tris
I was too young to understand this at the time, but I heard someone from Sega say that if the Saturn succeeded instead of the PS1, quads would be industry standard instead of tris. Were tris standard at the time of saturn/ps1?

Well, the thing was that Sega of Japan was trying to fucking bury Sega of America due to divisional in-fighting. The company was cannibalizing itself.

Are there any good videos or books on the rise and decline of Sega in the 90's?
I've always been fascinated by it since I never grew up with a Sega console.

Also any good Saturn emulators?
I'd buy the console and games but they're pricey as fuck, I just want to try out Sonic Jam.

No, I understand how it worked. The specifics of it are different than how we make digital purchases today and it was subscription based as opposed to singular titles, but the intent was roughly similar.

>Were tris standard at the time of saturn/ps1?

There was no standard yet

Panzer Dragoon still looks great, no matter how old the game is, if it has good artstyle and direction then it will still look good.

The ones I've seen are great resources for SEGA in the 90s up till Saturn where it just becomes the same shit you read on wiki.

SSF is a pain in the ass to set up but works well for most everything.

That's the pre everyone has internet time. Also helps if you live in a random country. You actually get surprised sometimes.

It was fucking garbage. I mean legit fucking trash. It was a streaming service. But not like today. You had to be there at the right time and then download the game it was streaming. Fuck SEGA Channel.

Most the games it streamed were garbage anyway.

If you like older games so much then it's worth investing in japanese region consoles, they always have the cheapest stuff and obviously more games too.
Some popular games or arcade titles have english subtitles or even voice acting so it shouldn't be a problem

Mednafen and SSF are okay. Lots of glitches, but most games are playable. You really are better of buying the hardware though and get someway to pirate games (Phantom Universal Modchip, Action Replay w/ PseudoSaturn, or Phoebe/Rhea).

Also why Sonic Jam? There are many games that will be stuck on the Saturn forever and you want to play a Genesis compilation? The 3D world is pretty cool I guess for a bit.

>as for 3D. nothing did that well compared to the stuff we have now.. looked awesome at the time tho. but not today.
>tho
I love how these type of comments almost exclusively come with ebonics users and mobile users. It's like they're underage? Na...

True, I didn't even have internet in my house until around 2003 or 2004.
I kind of miss not having it.

>Mednafen
>Lots of glitches
Nah man, it's pretty much flawless.

I honestly just want to try out that 3D world, I've been intrigued by it since seeing it briefly in a Sonic history video from Sonic Gems Collection years ago.

Oh boy. Emulatorfag is here ladies and gents. Don't be critical. Remember emulators are perfect, ESPECIALLY, cellphone emulators.

it went much better

Fuck are you talking about? I'm just saying using Mednafen will provide a glitch-free experience.

The first game? I disagree, it looks kinda shit IMO.

Solid gameplay and a great sweeping soundtrack is what holds that game together.

Yeah this.

Bernie Stolar dropped the ball with the RAM cartridge.

Me too to be honest. Much simpler times.

wrong kid died bros

If you are over age of 18 and really believe that PD looks like shit then you should kill yourself immediately

Pre-7th gen internet on consoles always fascinates me for some reason, especially with how advanced the Dreamcast was for its time and how the N64 DD was going to have internet capabilities in the future.

Knowing Japanese. A lot of good shit never came over.

What was it like? Tell me everything.

Good, let the EOP have some scraps that Bernie left for them.
I learned english as a kid to play games, then later japanese for the same reason.

>What could have went better?

If a plane carrying the Japanese branch's executives crashed with no survivors, leaving Tom Kalinske to go with Silicon Graphics for the SEGA Saturn and creating a powerful piece of hardware while also keeping a steady stream of quality games flowing world wide instead of just being held hostage in Japan.

We live in a time line where the fire never rose.

What are some GOOD Saturn games?

But in this time line we got a ton of great 2d games, but most of them never left japan. In that timeline, would we get a ton of great 3d games that never leave the states?

Grandia, Puyopuyo, NiGHTS, Panzer Dragoon

The Dreamcast had a successful launch and a massive marketing campaign behind it promoting it.

The only reason you have never heard of it is because you're 1 year away from being allowed to post on this board.

...

Flawed system for sure, but I still love it to pieces

Thank you.

We would have still gotten 2D games in that time line. The no 2D games on a 3D dominate platform was a Playstation thing.

My favorite shmup is on the system, Kingdom Grandprix

;_;7

pretty sad how no one remembers this now because of the ps3.

i never really saw what made Nights so special, and I bought that shit at launch.

If it weren't a Japanese exclusive and later ported to the PSX, I'd put Grandia up there or one of the many Saturn fighters as a must play.

Man I forgot about the power point in the background lol.

What's Steve Carrel doing there?

Lots of people played it, so it got a lot of votes.

Guardian Heroes will always be my favorite on the console.

Every console is flawed, you just choose one because of what games you love the most.
Now for young generations it seems like the youtube dictators are choosing what system and video games they should get, no one is exploring and trying to find something for themselves.

It's a fantastic game too
It was fun, had unique gameplay that wouldn't have worked well without a more powerful system. It didn't re-invent the wheel but it's a 10/10 game

Usually when a new game has great graphics, music and gameplay, people tend to like them and they get popular because of it, also it was killer app for Saturn

>We live in an age where you can easily play any system and any game from previous generations
>Rather than play them, people just parrot what a youtube celeb says
>People don't form their own opinions
>People seriously buy dumb shit like "Sonic was never good" without ever actually touching the games personally
>We still have console wars over this shit

Best arcade style game of the generation.

Heavily disagree

Especially when Virtual On and Die Hard exist

>>People seriously buy dumb shit like "Sonic was never good" without ever actually touching the games personally
>Implying the people who say it aren't the ones who play it for the first time now

You're welcome to your wrong opinion.

I never understood why Dynamite Deka is so heavily acclaimed now, gameplay is like a regular arcade games which is nice but the whole games is just parody of Die Hard with TONS of loading screens and unfitting music.
But Virtua On is amazing game, I also have it for Dreamcast

I'm 24 dude, nobody in my neighborhood owned a Dreamcast.

Happens, when you're a n*gger!

I've actually never played the Saturn version of Die Hard.

Dynamite Cop on the Dreamcast though. I spent a ton of time playing that shit.

>My anecdotal evidence proves me right

The arcade version of that was a lot of fun although Dynamite Cop was superior.

>claims anyone who didn't know about the dreamcast growing up is underaged with no evidence
>gets proven wrong
>m-muh evidence
Still a fantastic console regardless but this is a pointless argument.

I don't think your memory as a cock sucking 6 year old is valid source for how a $100 million marketing campaign went.

Not starving the west with only Nights and Panzer dragoon

Also where the hell were all the fighters
Still need to get Stellar Assault SS

>being this mad
I only said originally that I didn't know it existed until 2002 because nobody in my neighborhood had one.
