There's a lot more than just brutal doom out there.

It gets way too much love for what it is. In its day it was that good but its been decades. Anyone putting this game on a pedestal is just sad. It isn't 1993 anymore.

It definitely holds up. The level design is amazing and it's fun managing your different weapons and quickly trying to prioritize enemies in combat. I replay it every so often.

You used 1 through 7 to select your weapons, I believe there were also previous and next weapon keys but just hitting the numbers is faster.

I still use the numkeys to select my weapons

Just played the first one vanilla (with mouse, dunno if it was like that). It's a cool game, even if I don't see it as the masterpiece people make it up to be. Disappointed that the version I downloaded (chocolate) just had the first chapter, Knee Deep in Dead or something.

I like Serious Sam a lot more, but the contended aspect of Doom, just aiming at the general direction of enemies without need of aiming up and down, mostly indoors combat and the theme of Doom are more awesome in a different way. It seems less PSTD inducing too.

Oh yeah, I play it on Ultra Violence by which I mean for the first time literally yesterday I was saying you should at least play above baby mode.

Original Doom isn't as fun anymore because I've played all of those maps to death. But the base gameplay is solid and I love still playing new/existing map packs and megawads.

Its use of detailed 2D sprites made that game age very well. Quake's low-poly models aged far worse and looked outdated already by 1998.

The animations are fine and were made by experienced artists.
Compare that the early animations of 3D models without the help of mocap.

Look at it this way, Doom 1 maps have different pacing, just make use of your chaingun, rockets, and plasma.

And don't be afraid to chainsaw faggots.

Doom doesn't have as many enemies that really require the use of the SSG. Pinkies can be annoying, but aren't that bad to deal with.

I'm ok with the Doom 2 enemies but the massive reliance on the Super Shotgun gets old. It does everything.
