when it provides an enjoyable experience

When it actually has a good story. Which are very few.

I wish i knew.

I haven't enjoyed a videogame for 6 years now. I only play them to temporarily forget about my problems in life. It's like alcahol but without the harmful side effects.

Good gameplay from the get go.

>giving a flying piss about story
you have to go back

Unique aspects to the gameplay that manage to not be overly gimmicky or obtrusive.

When the game makes me feel like I've done well, without being over the top about it or too easy.

...

it simply needs to be good.
95% of modern games are just average

>alcahol

Looks like spelling was another thing you forgot

>makes a good impression within the first 5 minutes
>doesn't betray that good impression for the rest of the game

I don't give a shit about story. Which is why I'm impressed when a videogame's story manages to not be shit.

PEE! ESS! THREE! HAS...NO! GAMES!

immersion and depth

This

As a whole? There are little to no parts in the game which are tedious.

When the tutorial doesn't last 6 hours.

>tfw even Bomberman games had better story than most AAA games

you heard me, go back.

Calm your tits he's obviously drunk.

fpbp

It must be originals. That means
>no inspired by
>no based on
>no refrences
>no homages
>no call backs

Is it so hard for devs to just be original?

Hey Sup Forums, what are some games that impressed you because you THOUGHT it'd be shit?

digital styles

Almost every game is inspired by something one way or another

unless you're talking about when devs flat out say it then yeah i understand

>tfw they had to remove the "of quality" on the seal

When you can present an item to an NPC, and you find out that every single one has optional dialogue for that item or items.

Or when you have a partner with you that tells you things about an NPC or place, and it has fun and optional dialogue for every single person and area.

if the game doesn't feel like a chore and is fun and stays fun

The Waifu's.

All I care about are the girls.

I'm beyond help at this point, but I accept it.

Good animations

Good level design and combat. Ultimate Doom is the closest thing to a perfect game for me.

Replaying Demon Souls for the first time in 7 years right now and I have to say I'm very impressed with that as well.

it has to completely nail atmosphere, gameplay or music and be at least passable in the rest

what about tropgies

>Blood Omen
>Kain has a detailed spoken description for every item and piece of equipment

last time i was legit impressed was when i was trying the nintendo 64 for the first time
after living through tte 2d-3d transittion nothing will really blow my mind again
i guess im just impressed when a game is good all the way to the end because thats so rare

I like video games either way, but if a video game is gonna impress me, then it does so by making the best out of the sum of its parts.

Great gameplay, great story, great sound design, great music direction, etc.

It doesn't need to conform to any standard of "perfection" but find the best balance between all of those to suit what's best for the game in general.

If one element suffers, then all of it suffers as a whole.

Generally though, the developers just need to have had some fun making them game. About as much fun making it as you have playing it. Fallout 2's a pretty good example.
>those pornstar names
>those awful, corny references
>the love and dedication into the story and NPC's

You can tell that they loved that fucking game, and they made sure you did so too.

Arkham Asylum

It caters to my dick

Surprise me. Doesn't matter if its graphically or in overall quality, I want to see my expectations surpassed.

I remember being ecstatic when I played Dragons Dogma DA and found out you can jump on big monsters and climb around Shadow of the Colossus style.

When the art is done by our goddess Tsunako.
