Is this the most pretentious indie game in history?

Is this the most pretentious indie game in history?

>Wow, Curly, this sure is quite the Cave Story.
come on, really pixel?

No it's just a fun game with a nice lil story

no

its a metroidvania some jap made in his basement that got really popular

since its popular and you're a contrarian, it's "le hipster meme game"

...

nah, you're looking for starseed pilgrim

Undertale isn't even all that pretentious, Toby's fairly based, it's the fanbase that's cancer.

Wrong.

>t. someone who doesn't know the meaning of pretentious

>its a metroidvania
wrong

>Pixel asked to explain the game to an audience
>It's a game where you jump and you shoot

Ace number one most pretentious game of all time OP, definitely.

it's literally just a dead baby humor roguelike based on Lardmund's christfag family

Cave story is just a game made by one japanese guy that likes games, it's on the same level of cool good old indie like super meatboy and spelunky

braid and fez on the other hand are really pretentious

>it's an open exploration 2d side scrolling shooter
>being a reddit level pedant

...

i never found the game itself to be all that bad or pretentious

just that dickhat phil

>open exploration
no, you go through the levels in a linear order. you can go back in the same levels but that is never required to progress, barring the farm near the end, but this is far from metroid's upgrade centric path unlocking. the game is mega man. not metroid.

>even needing to ask this question when Gone Home exists

>posting The Underside ripoff

I think Toby's ok, sure, but the game itself is pretentious in that it believes its message is the only righteous one. If you don't agree with it, you're an asshole, according to the game.

'pretentious' means that the game in question would have to purposely inflate the importance/talent/depth of its story when it really isn't that good to actually deserve such things. Both Cave Story and Undertale don't do this. Tey just tell their stories in a (relatively) serious and focused way.

Honestly, I can't think of a single work of media that's pretentious. I feel media CAN'T be pretentious. Only people can. People like to throw the word around to insult "artsy" or "2deep4u" stories in media, but what's bad about art? If they writer is presenting its story seriously, that isn't 'pretentious', that's just the writer writing the story in a serious way. Every thing makes sense in the universe and the characters care about the conflict/plot, as they should.

A good example is The Witness. Very commonly criticized for being allegedly pretentious, but I disagree. It's main theme is 'perspective'. That's what the entire game is about. All the audio logs, the game play, the videos at the end. Everything. It's all about the concept of 'perspective' as a whole, and it pulls that off very well. Is this pretentious? No. The writer, Jonathan Blow, was simply focused on what he wanted to write, and presented it as such.

People like to use the word 'pretentious' too often without really thinking about what it really means, usually as an insult for something that is artistic that they didn't 'get', and thus they think its badly made and must be ridiculed. It's a legitimate style of presenting a story in media and I feel it's unfairly attacked too often.

What's really interesting about the entire game is that the only 'good' person is Mom.

How the fuck is Cave Story pretentious in anyway?
Sup Forums's using words they don't understand, again.

>blaming Sup Forums
Always slander them for atrocities like op. Never accept them as 'us'.
OP is a cuck sucking Faggot and probably underage as well.

>cave story
>pretentious
Is pretentious the most misused word in history?

best post

it's the next "literally"

Braid is especially pretentious, especially the whole bit following the last rewind segment that goes on about the Manhattan Project.

it was one of the first roguelikelike games
this thing and spelunky pretty much predated/started the indie roguelike meme

>the game is mega man.
its no closer to megaman than it is to metroid, idiot

>game itself
Some of the secret cubes are extremely obnoxious to get.
Looking up the solution in the achievement list was clever, but the others with the 8 letter word and the "wait 7 days for the clock to show the anti cube" was not fun.
I 100%'d Fez, and I did enjoy it for the most part

I can't decide between Inside and Thomas Was Alone.

Then again, Thomas is about fucking geometry.

i got the one with blinking lights in binary completely by accident while mashing on the triggers.

I think that's a bit unfair as the game's message is really broad, and most players are mistakenly believing that Sans' message is the only one worth taking, or players that mellow-dramatically believe that Chara's end-state for genocide is a "bad" thing to corrupt "good" endings when in reality that's just one final notch in the game's completionism.

The game's message isn't pretentious at all as much as it is casual as fuck. The message is essentially that a game can be good without someone needing to 100%ed. The game mocks and vilifies completionism. Even if you mean well, Sans will call you out on being a dick, and multiple Genocide playthroughs causes Chara to say that you're a pretty fucked up faggot. The message is play until the credits roll, then let the game die. Games, and fandoms, are not worth more than their five minutes of fame.

In many different veins, Toby has gone on record saying that this game had no business being so popular, even if he personally thought it was pretty good, and the fact that so many people spoil themselves and watching it are the problem, even installing flowey as one last ditch effort to fourth wall guilt trip people who don't play genocide but who want to watch it.

>this game isn't pretentious because of my arbitrary definition
I like 2deep4u shit too but come on.

i thought no one was going to mention the witness.
this.

What the fuck ever happened to that game?

>when you use "pretentious" as an insult to something but don't even know the meaning of the word so you end up looking pretentious yourself
