Nah man. There's VR, then there's HD VR, then UHD VR

Shouldn't that be 16k?

It won't end until pixel perfect.

It should have stopped at 1080. This is getting ridiculous.

Who /16kmasterrace/ here?

>VR
>for gaming
>improper for anything that isn't a rail shooter or a piloting borefest
>having any future

What's the point of having 8k when no game will be able to render at that resolution properly?
Or even if you buy an insanely high end PC, what's the point if the ingame textures and models have limited sizes?

You can barely tell the difference between 1080 and 4k if you're TV is under 50 inches, 8k is going over board

>boot up my quantum computer
>16k monitor starts up
>face blasted with 10^100 watts of power
>mfw I can't even see the pixels

console fags monitors can't even kill a person, fucking casuals

Ah yes, I remember when people said that about 720p and 1080p not so long ago.

>he doesn't game at 640x480

I bet you use a 16bit colour palette as well.

No because people will augment their eyes and brain to see over 16k

No.

But it will still take a while until "4K" becomes widely adopted, so anything above that won't be much of a thing anytime soon.

There's already textures exceeding these resolutions, though.

you know that, even if there isn't much of a difference, the shills will still sell all the normies high resolution just because the numbers on the box are bigger right?

might switch to non-sqaure pixels at some point

It's still a thing

So much digital media is upscaled 720p it's obscene

4k content remains near non-existent

>but thats not how physics works bro

Playing d2 is a pain in the ass

I just wish the normies would start to demand better panels with higher Hz and colour fidelity like CRT's had, instead of this 4K and 8K meme.

>being this dumb

They are, normies love the new OLED TVs.

Hence the brain altering

>tfw you have unlimited pixels but no games

In practical terms 4k exists right now only for monster gaming PC's and those (even more niche) cases when you need huge screen estate for workflow.

>we should have stopped at 480p this is ridiculous

but they are shit user.

yes because we all need 100" tv's to play games with to actually see the difference.

I didn't say they were good, but Normies are pushing for higher than shitty 1000:1 IPS panels - even if they don't quite understand why.
>Most of the customers say shit like 'its so clear' - even though we're running upscaled 480i from ABC News 24.

end game is Gibson's simstims and literally jacking yourself to a computer, no more buying expensive and eventually obsolete hardware

Well I guess there is some hope then.

>being blind

Have you seen crt threads? There are still people who believe this?

Considering I'm at 10K and climbing, no.

tell me how much of a benefit I am going to get for my 40" tv being 8k or even 16k?

As a britbong I was shocked by the low quality of your news networks. Why hasn't anyone invested in better cameras but they have on TV screens?

.* ffs , sometimes I wish we had a edit option.

For games that were made for CRTs you fucking moron.

There aren't people in the CRT threads who think lower resolution is better.

However they do think CRTs are better and quite often discuss very low resolution CRTs for older console gaming and arcade replacement.

No, 32k is the end game. At that point we wont be able to see a difference. From there revolutionizing technology will need to take place. Ever since 720 this shit has been barely worth the upgrade.

shiiieet 32k is like last years news to me

nigga we going 128k soon and then 256k at yolodeck release

>Just installed a 420p CRT in my room the last month
>niggas now talking about 8K
Niggas, like, hold. Im never gonna catch up at this rate.

Well depends what you are coming from and what you are doing. At the very minimum for vidya purposes more resoluition serves as a form of anti-aliasing. Sticking with vidya certain genres benefit more - RTS games benefit immensely from resolution as it lets you see more of the map at any given time for example.

Lets flip this question on it head - if you go emulate (say) a ps1 game at native resolution and then at 4x (or more) will you see a difference?

>being this delusional

>Outside of indie games designed to be played on toasters, console devs can barely handle a stable 1080p 30fps, let alone 60fps.
>lol we're done with 1080p, lets go for 4k now xD.
As soon as Mark Cerny said they had "reached the limits of what 1080p had to offer", I knew there was absolutely no possible way the PS4 Pro or Project Scorpio would be good.
I had plenty of doubts before but that just confirmed it.

Man before 4k was even trending (video came out in 2011) watching this fucking blew my mind

youtube.com/watch?v=9U7e_quvkPQ

4k is a meme 8k will be a bigger meme, it's just used to sell video cards to brainless PC fats who need to feel superior

>Well depends what you are coming from and what you are doing.
Watching tv and playing console games from my sofa.
>At the very minimum for vidya purposes more resoluition serves as a form of anti-aliasing.
I'm not sitting 2 feet away from the screen
> Sticking with vidya certain genres benefit more - RTS games benefit immensely from resolution as it lets you see more of the map at any given time for example.
If you are talking about PC games, then I wouldn't be sporting a 40" screen but a much smaller one.
>Lets flip this question on it head - if you go emulate (say) a ps1 game at native resolution and then at 4x (or more) will you see a difference?
I don't know as I would not be emulating it on 40" screen in the first place.

It's not the cameras it's the broadcast.
We adopted DVB-T right at the very beginning and the Howard government in their infinite wisdom decided to push HDTV in 2000, on regular DVB-T (so MPEG2 video and MP2 audio)

We've finally been able to start using h.264 for 1080i services (only one allowed per multiplex though!) and for 576i extra services (which didn't exist prior to h.264 1080i channels) but most everything else is pushed through at ~2-3mbps (sometimes as low as 1mbps) MPEG2. Which makes it look like ass. (DVD was MPEG2 at 8-14mbps for 480i/576i for comparison)

Even worse are the online services which cap bandwidth at 1mbps and look even worse.

Yes, and my original point was in how little it does for you if the screen isn't big enough. It's only benefit is that you can get very good and amazing image quality on a fuck huge screen. It's fucking wasted on a smaller TV.

If you don't like it, well hey fuck you.

Whatever manufacturers are willing to sell me as a ~21 inch desktop monitor for $100 and 55 inch TV for $500 is the endgame

>tfw you fell for the "PS4 offers true 4K" meme

I can barely tell the difference between 720p and 1080p

Yeah man I can't wait to have 8K on my 7" phone. I'm excited to not see the pixels properly.

What happens when my body becomes obsolete hardware?
it already is

If you have a large screen and are on the other side of the room to it you definitely want more resolution for the juicy PPI.

>21" monitor
lol.
Get with the times grandpa.

It's all about the 32/34" now.

>believing placebos

the end game is getting rid of pixels

What about 12k?

If you saved enough bucks during your life you can buy a simstim retirement plan, where you can live blissfully for however long as you had the credits for.

Wasn't that the PS4 pro ?

Consumers become tired of upgrading and run out of money if you push new resolution formats every five years. Look at how quickly VHS was replaced by DVD but how DVD persisted after bluray had already been out for a while.

I can understand 4K for my needs but for 8K and 16K I am going to need a lot bigger TV to get some real benefit that would justify the "investment".

Remember what happened to 3D TVs? The ywere all the "rage" for 2 years and fucking vanished into thin air just to be replaced with curved UHDTVs.

Are you sure you're trying to look at your monitor, and not trying to stick your face into a live electrical main? I'm not certain monitors broadcast power at you.

>Look at how quickly VHS was replaced by DVD but how DVD persisted after bluray had already been out for a while.

That's more to do with the film industry trying to keep cinemas open though.

man im already at the fucking end game. i have a 50 inch 4k smart tv hooked up to a ps4, sky Q, and a pc with i7 and a 1080. Theres is literally no reason for me to upgrade for ages, maybe get another 1080 down the line but that is it. im perfectly happy to stay like this forever.dont even use 4k half the time because 1080p is just fine. But 4k is glorious. its enough

When do we get to the point of having the video versions of audiophiles, who pay thousands of dollars for differences in quality only they can perceive?

>things I can't afford are memes
>things I can barely afford are good
>things I can easily afford are plebian

We are already there. Don't you remember gold plated Monster HDMi cables?

Kek im playing xenoblade x (720p) on a 1440p 27" monitor and dear lord it looks horrendous. 8k is when we won't need to suck large volumes of cock for the image to not look aliased, it cannot come soon enough.

It's already happening with "premium" HDMI cables.

k is just a meme. You should look at dpi/ppi and viewing distance.

I can't afford a supercar either but those aren't memes. The value just isn't there, 4k is a meme

I was a bit surprising the other day when I performed a test on Rise of the Tomb Raider in 1080p and 4k.

I was always completely fine with 1080p, but a single trip to the 4k world made it look legit terrible. All grainy and shit. It actually felt like there was something wrong with the game for a while.

That's when I became a 4k believer, with the slight issue of 4k very high running at 17 fps on my PC.

Sure they were replaced, but there aren't many who went and ditched their 2 year old 3DTVs for new Curved UHD OLED monstrosities either, manufacturers will always have new gimmicks but customers still only buy a new TV every few years.

Manufacturers rely on it, they overprice everything on release then slowly reduce the prices so that by the time the 'new thing' comes along they can charge the same old prices again (and con the new customers who haven't purchased a TV in 6-8 years into buying the 'premium' new TV)

>8k
>not 16k

WHEN WILL THEY LEARN

Yeah, it's pretty transparent and I can't help but wonder why there are so many suckers that always go for the upper end of the price range when after a year they are barely 1/3 of the price.

Its really simple, just follow the K-to-inch metric.
If your TV has more inches than Ks you could do with an upgrade

The leap from VHS to DVD was far greater than DVD to Blu-ray. VHS died out because they were hilariously impractical compared to DVD's, while the only difference between DVD and Blu-Ray is picture and sound quality. People will still continue to buy DVD's even when they start releasing 8K physical media.

t.has not played vr

What about games like tethered and shit?

What about all the possibilities for RTS games?

I know that you guys will point out that some people from the past said that 720p was good enough and that 1080p was unnecessary, but I think that 4K is genuinely a great resolution for the 'end game'.

>VHS died out because they were hilariously impractical compared to DVD
I don't know about that. At least I could go straight to watching the movie instead of having to sit through 10 minutes of unskippable FBI warnings and shitty trailers.

>What about all the possibilities for RTS games?
Such as?

>8k
>Still on 1080p

At least i'm getting 150 frames in most games.

Video game industry will be pretty much dead outside mobile at that point. 720p already killed more than half of the studios last gen

DRM is great!

> when you need huge screen estate for workflow.
You wish. I fell for this meme, and I have to say that anyone who needs real estate that much is better off with a multimonitor setup.

You can aways... to go... even further beyond!

Yeah really made the push for me to just fuck it and pirate it all. It's like film companies hate money and want me to watch everything for free.

I miss CRT with their deep blacks, great motion(no sample and hold bullshit), no input lag and no native resolution

Fuck modern displays

Me too user ;_; me too

>There are still people who believe this?
Because CRT is still the best display technology

The display industry doesn't care about quality anymore they're just interested in selling you extremely overpriced tv's

end game is Brain VR simulation

>420p

the end game is 100000k in the year 6700

>It's fucking wasted on a smaller TV.
Not really since the smaller the display the higher the DPI(the sharper the display is)

The thing is that everything below the your native resolution(like say for example an 8K TV) will look like shit because modern displays can't multi-sync because they're fucking garbage

there is no end game.

There is no reason to believe that they won't just keep making higher resolutions as technology advances.
