A more "refined" version of the brand of the undead. The latter forms naturally as humanity tries to escape a body, tearing a hole through the flesh, it's big and messy. The former is manually created by the people of Londor, like a meticulous surgical cut, and making it easier to create more of them on one person and thus making it easier for them to be drained of humanity without destroying their body.

You take the first flame into your hollow body, in place of the humanity you used to hold. The hollows of Londor all accept and worship you as their undefeated leader now empowered with the flame that fuelled the entire world for millenia, with Anri at your side because From needed sidequest padding.

No. Deep infused weapons and Deep spells both deal dark damage, and the Deep Gem explicitly states that the Deep is associated with darkness, just a darkness that's so dark humans cannot imagine it. In addition, the souls that Deep Soceries cast (souls that swell upwards from the Deep) come from humans. It's inherently tied into Humanity.
Unlike the dark, the deep is said to be an actual place that used to be peaceful.
Also, there are two key distinctions between the dark and the deep, the first one being the bluish aura the deep emits, the second one is how both affect people, the pus of man (corruption from the dark) is extremely different from Sullyvahn's beasts or the deep accursed
The Abyss is not synonymous with the Dark, try again. We knew this even during the time of DaS1 and DaS2, when the Dark was described as serene and peaceful, just like the Deep. The Abyss is corrupted Darkness in much the same sense that Chaos is a corruption of Fire. The Abyss does not exist naturally, it has to be created by fucking with people's humanity with evil sorceries.

Also, there are no ""dark"" transformations outside of the Abyss, the Pus of Man IS an Abyssal monster, check the Follower's Torch from the DaS3 dlc

I'm pretty sure what's happening is that instead of surrendering your soul to be consumed by the First Flame, you are instead allowing the First Flame to be infected by Humanity like a sort of parasite. Which is infinite times worse than just letting it die out like the endings of previous games.

they sprung up spontaneously from all the wild/corrupted humanity that is literally oozing out of the walls. one of the characteristic traits of the Abyss is that it has a will of it's own, and so given a high enough concentration of Abyss some of that wild/mutated/floating humanity budded off from the rest and started floating about on it's own doing what it wanted. the transformed villagers are the bloatheads and chained prisoners.
Speaking of lore, my mind was blown when I first reached Smouldering Lake because I had the misleading impression that the reason the roots of the world were ablaze was because a new First Flame was sprouting into being.
I was really disappointed later on when I realized that wasn't the case.

I know this is mostly pedantic, but that's what I mean by the cycle of linking. The constant and increasingly faster interval between someone linking the Flame and it starting to grow weak again, requiring more souls.
I only bring this up because sometimes in these threads I see Anons mistakenly believing that there are multiple First Flames through the games.

You only see the Abyss pop up when people drive a Lord Soul (the Dark Soul) wild and mutate it with sorcery. You wouldn't try making the argument that Chaos is natural. It isn't a natural creation. Natural darkness is peaceful and gentle.

I mean, it always had the whole intersecting timelines and realities aspect of it, but it was never really a focus, more like an excuse to make summoning work. It was 2 and 3 that started jumbling it a bit, especially 3 with its greater reliance on warped space.
The only lore implication from DS2 I want to see resolved is the hint that Seath might still be active somehow in the world.

Also, the Everlasting Dragon soul you acquire through the Ashen Mist Heart, which I know is a mislabeled item from the fake Dragon Aldia created but still should not at all be where you find it and is probably the only instance I can think of in the entire franchise of an item description being wrong.

My money is on it being about Londor and hopefully the Primordial Serpents.
Even if we never see Velka she gets a free pass from me due to possibly being the game's intro narrator, which is cool enough.

Gwyndolin's interests lay in tricking humans into linking the flame, and considering that the CotD was a cult dedicated to keeping the flames lit (monstrous as it was), it was in Gwyndolin's interests to support it

There's nothing indicating Gwyndolin would have any direct associations with Aldrich and Sulyvahn's corrupted teachings, just with the regular Way of White hierarchy as the force behind Gwynevere and the Anor Londo masquerade.

DaSIII doesn't exactly retcons DaSII's story because there isn't much to be retconned, considering II is more of a side story than anything else and has no relevance to the events of I or III, it just serves to expand the setting.
At most, the only aspects in which II and III are in active conflict are that the Old Iron King couldn't possibly have a hold of the Old King Soul, and the whole mess involving the Old Dragonslayer and Ornstein.
Also it sas that Vendrick was absolutely obsessed with souls, which depending on how you look at it might not even be a retcon at all.
