wow the 3DS is a big downgrade
Top is 3DS
bottom is PS2
8
Yeah not even worth it.
>wow a handheld has less power than a recent-gen home console
D-DON'T START WITH 8!
I REPEAT DON'T START WITH 8
Play 5 (DS or PS2 version) or 3 (Snes)
Are these games even good? Like, there are a hundred games, but no one ever talks about them ever.
>ps2
>recent
Hello time traveler, here in the future we're on the ps4 now.
1
>recent
The PS2 is almost 20 years old
How retarded are you? Sup Forums talks about them a lot. Especially 8.
>2001
>recent
I don't recall ever seeing but a few threads and I've been here for almost a decade.
So what is it then? Does "no one talk about them ever" or do threads get made about it? Make up your mind.
dq8 3ds is a decent starting game, especially if you've got piracy to fix the music and outfits.
like yeah it looks worse than ps2 version, but it does have some extras.
i just wish it wasn't so easy to avoid battles on 3ds. and being completely healed when leveling up made the game too easy.
A few threads. Pales in comparison to literally any other game franchise ever.
I wish they would go back to the difficulty of dragon warrior 2 on the NES
anyone else feel the same way? the 2nd game, on the NES, was difficult as fuck but fun
the rest of the games are too easy and feel like they're getting even easier with new releases
It is like metal gear. No body talk about the game but everyone says that it is the best
Trees are randomly generated in both games. 3DS is objectively more powerful than PS2 and is rendering two frames at once. Also that's a high res emulator PS2 shot. PS2 version runs at 512x240 and takes advantage of interlacing to render odd and even 512x240 frames one after the other because it only had 4MB of VRAM. Some games used jewish tricks to get around this and display progressively but the point is the PS2 was shitty hardware
Dragon Quest V is the best one to start with imo, it's a really good RPG in itself and reminded me that JRPGs used to actually be enjoyable
I have no idea what happened
Waifus, fanservice and weebs
Again, make up your mind. Does no one talk about them ever or do they get talked about?
Even then, you're retarded. The franchise gets talked about when new games get released. You weren't here when DQM Joker 2 released. You weren't here for the japanese DQX streams. You were never in a single DS or PS2 recommendation thread, or JRPG recommendation thread for that matter.
please don't tease me with that picture
rocket slime was so fucking fun and it pisses me off that we're not going to get the 1st and 3rd game of the series.
>recent-gen home console
lol
I've been here for "almost" a decade as well and Sup Forums gets DQ threads relatively often. Lurk more.
Is V on android decent?
I don't have a ds anymore but I could use the portability
It isnt popular in the west
There is your answer
If you think Sup Forums has the best taste or something then sure have fun only playing the games that are talked about here
Im not going to care
You could say the same about most classic JRPG franchises
Front Mission, Growlanser and Chrono Trigger for example are all very good but very rarely discussed
>do Ruined Abbey last night (in DQ8)
>quick save, don't pay attention like a dumbass, and immediately turn my 3DS off afterward to go to sleep
>now have to re-do entire Ruined Abbey
Welp that's my fault. I don't even understand the point of Quick Save then if it's wiped when you close the damn game.
I have joker 2 shrink wrapped. Is it any good? I bought the original years back and didn't play it for a long time. Put a lot of hours into it while unemployed once also a few years ago. Enjoyed it and bought joker but never played it
There is nothing fun about your first encounter being a mud doll that drains all your MP in one turn
None whatsoever
It's better than the first game, in my opinion. You can have giant monsters now that fill 2 or 3 slots in your party.
You might as well start with 8.
Brazil please leave
I want to open it now. But I want to play DQ8. Hmmm
Emulate it
Its possible to play DQ8 on emulator?
I started with 8 and now I don't know where to go because no one can give me a straight answer on what to play next. 8 Spoiled me and the only other one that looks interesting is 11 that I've seen. I can't really get a gauge from 9 and 7 as to if they're the same sort of open world as 8.
the PS2 one? Of course
The 3DS one? Maybe in 10 years when the Citra devs become competent.
7 is more linear. You go to different islands and time periods and complete little stories to restore the islands in the present.
9 is more open like 8 and has a ton of post-game content and extras to complete. You can't access the free DLC on a legit copy now though.
I would say go with 7 3DS remake if you want more somewhat modern mechanics. If you can get past the intolerably slow first hour (first three to four hours on the PSX version), then you get right into it, and the gameplay is much faster than 8.
Be aware though, 7 is the longest in the series, even on the 3DS version. Takes about 80 hours on 3DS for the main story, and almost 120 hours for main story on the PSX version.
>You can't access the free DLC on a legit copy now though.
How come?
I don't mind if it is long. It sounds comfy. I'm not too big a fan of the linear stuff but I'd give it a try.
What else could you anons tell me about 9? And 10 is the "NEVER EVER" title, right?
10 is a MMO. So yeah, there's no chance now after all this time I'd say.
9 is somewhat different to the other games, it's designed around multiplayer. The story is pretty basic and feels more like a collection of sidequests.
9 is a title developed by Level 5 before they devolved into Yokai Watch only company, so it's around the height of their creativity (debatable though). There's more of an emphasis on class balancing and creating your own party. It's very similar to how DQ3 was in which the story evolves around you instead of your team being part of it.
It's pretty well balanced, though considered one of the more challenging of the series, and has a lot going for it. It's also a bit more open then other games, but still pretty linear. Has about 50 hours on the main story too, but the post game story is inaccessible on a classic DS since the servers for the DLC went down. You can still access them through emulation though.
And yes, 10 isn't coming over here unless a miracle happens. Though, the DQ team has said they want to bring it over, I'd say considering it's coming on the Switch now, this is probably the last chance for it to come to the west. XI will make its way here, no doubt. Just a matter of when.
if i am casual babby and want to explore a world instead of read a couple novels worth of text, which dragon quest should i play?
i'll admit i'm a pretty big fag so i probably wouldn't be a fan of older games with rough graphics and untested gameplay. is 7 the best?
Play 9 or one of the Dragon Quest Monsters games.
Or the pic in
Both of them sound pretty appealing. It looks like VII is creeping up in price so I will get that first. I don't appreciate that the DLC for 9 is now inaccessible. Is it actual content? I was planning on getting both but that could be a big deal breaker.
final fantasy 13 is the right game for you
Dragon Quest was made so the Monsters games could be made.
Mainline is unplayable trash. Every major JRPG series (FF, Star Ocean, etc) is better.
Star Ocean has a single good game to it's name while DQ has at least V and VIII, you're retarded and delusional.
It's post game quests, additional characters in the Inn, and story content, and does add quite a bit to the game. Emulation is the easiest way to access them, but if you want to go the actual route of a physical DS you either will have to use an Action Replay and some codes, or a DQIX Save Editor.
It sucks, I know. Blame GameSpy for shutting down their servers.
The Vita could have done it with no compromises, and it released within a year of the 3DS.
why do people shill V so much? or is it just you making those posts?
if you don't mind can you sell me on V?
it looks hard to digest compared to the newer ones. 2D and all that
THREE! DRAGON QUEST 3 IS THE MOST POLISHED OF THE SERIES.
It is perfect to start the series with too because all others have something unique that DQ III doesn't have, but aren't as polished.
are you saying going back to 2D sprites is hard?
>DRAGON QUEST 3 IS THE MOST POLISHED OF THE SERIES.
>2D and all that
If that is your reason for disliking it, then there is no point talking to you in the first place. What a fucking imbecile.
i mean if you went from a 3d open world to a 2d world it'd be kind of different wouldn't it?
imagine if something like rogue galaxy was 2d
Tell me something that isn't well balanced and/or cohesive in the game. Even DQ8 didn't give me the feeling of exploring the unknown that DQ3 did.
I don't know, maybe my taste is just too japanese.
listen i know i triggered you guys but i am still interested in hearing what makes V so good. is it the story? is there some sort of game mechanic that makes it really enjoyable to play?
i'm just not a fan of 2D games, sorry. it's my own opinion no need to get buttflustered
I was made in 2D in mind. The world is still vast with a world map. Plus DQ8 isnt open world in a sense, it has a world map like 5
>is it the story?
Pretty much. That and being able to choose your wife.
you could try the PS2 version, it's a conversion of the 2D original but I like the environments a lot.
2000 actually
>playing DQV without Debora
Its like playing VIII without the orchestral score.
Bianca is the only reasonable choice anyway.
I'm enjoying the 3DS port so far even with the downgrade but you are 100% right. FFX/X-2 HD runs on the Vita. They could have added all the QoL improvements and a HD facelift on top of it. It's stupid how much wasted potential the Vita is.
shes fucking hot, who is this
>The PS2 is almost 20 years old
At first I thought you were memeing, then I remember the PS2 was released in 2000 and we're in 2017. Holy shit.
my daughter.
too bad she's not real just like your waifu
But then no one would buy it
>3DS is objectively more powerful than PS2 and is rendering two frames at once.
3DS version doesn't have 3D. I still think you're wrong but I don't care about that, just trying to help you out for your post in the next thread, and the one after that.
Star Ocean 1 and 2 were both good
She's still the cutest.
I think it only gets deleted if you quit to the main menu. Closing the game will still let you load the quick save next time you load it up.
>rendering two frames at once
drops frames constantly in 3D mode and DQVIII doesn't even have it
>that's a high res emulator PS2 shot
DQVIII still looks better on PS2 whether you used superior component cables or shitty composite ones
2 is where it's at. Favorite game of all time.
9 is the easiest to get into. also the easiest dragon quest, period
With the Whip for Jessica nerfed, should I just not invest in whip anymore? Back on the PS2 version I did Whips, Staves, and Sex Appeal.
Daily reminder that all Dragon Quest fans are pedophiles. That's why V is their favorite game.
>easiest dragon quest
That's VII 3ds.
Here's a link for the patched restored music Dragon Quest VIII. Enjoy fellow piratefags.
>but the post game story is inaccessible on a classic DS since the servers for the DLC went down. You can still access them through emulation though.
I thought you could access it via action replay?
DQ has very few little girls.
FF is the pedo series.
...
Dragon Quest III is Japans favorite game. Dragon Quest VIII is the favorite game in the west. And yet again another guy who doesn't know anything about Dragon Quest.
How do you fix the music?
Step 1: Go to 3DSISO
Step 2: Pirate the version with shit fixed
?????
Someone needs to make a US version REEEEE
People are reporting weird shit in that thread. I knew the JP version wasn't full orchestral, but people are saying that the US version has like one or two songs orchestral that are synth in the JP version (only the bar theme it seems like).
Huh? FFIX is the only one so far that I can recall having a little girl on my team. What other FF's am I missing?
They should have waited for the Switch for dragon Quest VIII desu.
*thumbs down*
This game came out a year and a half ago in Japan. And Japan sure as hell doesn't want to wait for Dragon Quest, especially not for the sake of Americans.
4,5,6,11,14
4, 5, 6.
>wow a handheld has less power than a recent-gen home console
are you talking about the switch or the 3ds
i can't tell
>Not all music is orchestral yet
>Weird skin color on the uncensored outfits
>No US version
v4 of the fix when?
Why is the pal version of 5 so expensive?
