Literally, the rest of it blows. Knuckles and Rouge do feel tight as shit to handle and play around with actually, but it's squandered on those fucking soul-destroying boring treasure hunting levels which somehow manage to be WORSE than the SA1 treasure hunts.

Everyone likes to hate on the mech levels, but I absolutely love them. They're a wonderful combination of speedrun and scoreattack which really appeals to me. I had nostalgia goggles on when I rebought the game. Sonic/Shadows levels are still some of the best. But everything else is slow monotonous garbage.

Why would you expect mech controls to be 100% fluid? Besides, I think "clunky-ass handling" is putting it far too harshly. If you don't suck ass at the game they're very easy to get used to and work just fine.

I don't think that really counts as a viable excuse. It's a Sonic game, I want to go fast and have fun. Gamma was faster and more fluid compared to these two. They should've adapted the scenario around the gameplay, not the gameplay around the scenario. If they didn't think they could make mech gameplay feel realistic while also being as snappy as Gamma, they should've changed the mech concept into something else. Simple as that.

The game was originally going to consist of three campaigns: Sonic as the Hero, Eggman as Dark and Knuckles as neutral. Rouge, Shadow and Tails were story characters but without playable roles - they got cloned from the original three playstyles later on. This is why

That's incredibly poor framing. I think the general sense of priority for games like this should be 'fluid control' over 'having mechs', so if the two conflict, don't constrain the control scheme with clunky mech concepts. As the previous post mentioned there was a proven track record (gamma) of better controls in a similar style character.
Plus, the two most technically competent characters in the game can only come up with a goofy walker mech? Absurd
There was a glitch where you couldn't progress on Eggman's Cannon's Core stage on some discs.

Sonic and Shadow levels are the only good parts
And even then only City Escape, Radical Highway, Metal Harbor, Green Forest, and Sonic's last level (the rail grinding one I can't remember) are the real standouts with the others being meh overall.
Pretty sure Sonic has 6. 7 at a push. Certainly not 10.

Including the new somersault move meant that tap-spindashing was gone, which was one of the best ways to speedrun and generally fuck around in Adventure 1. Made Sonic's gameplay feel a bit shitty by comparison.

only the last phase of Biolizard was complete bullshit, otherwise I just find it to be a surprisingly difficult boss.
This, why are Sonic Team such retards? Sonic controls nicely at low speeds in the Adventures but shit at high speeds, with twitchy turning and whatnot. Whereas in the boost games, Sonic controls nicely at high speeds but controls like a fucking tank at low speeds.
Why can't they find a middle ground?

The best thing is, Eggman wasn't even really playing mindgames to find out if the emerald was real or not - he was just fucking with Tails for the fun of it. In the dark campaign he clearly notices that they're fucking with a fake emerald a few cutscenes prior, when he sees more emerald readings on his emerald radar screen thingy.
Spindashing sucked a bag of dicks and was a downgrade from SA1's Spindashing
