That was one of the main reasons to get a console. Now the only reason to get one is exclusives, which many people can live without now.
I imagine there are now more reasons NOT to get a console now than reasons to get one.

It's only overwhelming if you're trying to install or update a full library at the same time.

Waiting 10mins for an install, patch, etc. is perfectly fine. You can get a snack, watch a youtube video, dick around on your phone, etc.

Splitscreen and local multiplayer was part of the appeal of consoles for me, but most games have done away with those features.

But do you really need to download a disk? You dont need to on ps2. Should i just get a pc instead of an ps4?

No shit, new consoles are jail locked PCs.

Consoles have lost their way, I understand now they are competing against the power house that is the PC which has limitless power behind it (depending on how much a person is willing to spend on their rig).

Consoles need to go back to simple access plug and play straight away enough of this install bullshit but it will never happen now or ever again as devs see consoles now as an easier way to releasing unfinished games that can be patched weeks later.

So do they not consider the time it takes to drive to the store to purchase a game as equivalent to time waiting for a download?

Ps4 and Xbox one gen was a shit gen for me. Very little games that caught my eye and a bunch of fucking remasters/rereleases. That cements my decision to not bother with consoles anymore and the whole download to play your games doesn't help it in the slightest.

Before then

>order game
>wait for it to arrive
>play
or
>have to go to store, which might or might not have the game
>possibly have to wait in line depending on traffic
>get home
>play

Now

>buy the game on your smartphone while taking a shit
>preload automatically starts on your sleeping console
>playable the very second the game officially releases
>updates are automatically downloaded and installed when your console is in sleep mode and you don't even have to do anything
>can easily stream, record your game or even let some friend anywhere in the world control your character with a few button presses
