The environment generation always fails in comparison to hand place. If they go the route of hand made setpieces in random order, then you start to realize very quickly how often something is reused.
Procedural generation thrives in regards to enemy and item design, as it allows for unrivaled variety. However many devs dont realize this and simply dont create enough different enemies/variables on the enemy to create the variety that a progen game needs to be good
and on the other hand you got crap like risk of rain where the levels are so garbage it looks procedurally generated but its not
Procedural generation has its place, like any other part of game development. Over reliance on it, to the point that the environments are created entirely by a generator, is usually a sign of laziness or incompetence.
Or just a shitty type of game like No Man's Sky and its million billion planets.
For open ended exploration games like say Minecraft or something, its great. It also works for some dungeon crawler type games as well.
Really though, I generally prefer my environments handcrafted and designed by a person.

Procedural generation can have its uses, but the recent boom of the Roguelite genre really shows how bland and samey environments can be without a loving touch.
A better example would be pointing to Nu Male's Sky, and how utterly ugly 99.99% of all of the procedural content beyond its environment in the game is, including the mismatched flora to the fauna.

they are good if you have competent programmers. Make artists create the assets and then the programmers will use them in an algorithm to procedural creation of environment.
But as you can see, competent programmers are very hard to find and very costly. Considering that videogame development is a shit job with shit pay, the good ones will never touch that field.
In contrast, you can hire a lot of artists with decent skill that can do the monkey work of creating assets and manually creating the environments. They are cheaper and they are easier to find because videogames are one of the few places where they can get a paycheck without begging for money in Patreon.

In terms of content expansiveness, yes, it's a shortcut.
You can make something that generates as you go along and claim it's literally indefinite because it keeps making content for you. The degree of comparable effort to make an engine generate numerous areas or levels or other things in a game drops out exponentially when you have your initial generator made. If you handmade 20 levels, 200 weapons/armor/items, and 100 enemy types, versus making a tool which automatically makes levels, weapons/armor/items, and enemy types, you'll see the effort shift dramatically against handmaking them. Procedural generation is an easy shortcut for indefinite content and rewards less effort on the development team's part with higher results.

Well, maybe, but the thing with SM is that the sub WANTS to submit. Think about this huge girl. She can boss anyone around, she can beat anyone up. People might even be afraid of her. It's pretty easy to see the appeal of giving up control for a few hours and being completely at someone else's mercy. On the other hand, she got that big on purpose, so she might love that feeling of power all the time.
Sometimes it can certainly be through physically overpowering the other person, but it's definitely not all or only about that. My last girlfriend was more bratty and ddlg, so her way of submitting was acting up in order to get punished sort of thing.

The depressing part about this is that if procedurally based content is placed onto a handmade foundation, the games come out fantastically. Look at Mount and Blade for example. Solid foundation, solid continuous streams of randomized enemies, randomized allies, and other unknown variables, and we're left with this unending stream of conflicts we need to constantly be prepared for, but with focused measures so that those conflicts are something we actually know how to ready ourselves to deal with.
I feel like they're neat, but the next big step will be procedurally generated stories like Dwarf Fortress is trying to do.
