and as a CT fan, this was always one of the best tracks on the OST. I wish I could get my hands on the pre-console version of this one, SNES, DS, or otherwise, but no such thing exists.

I can't get over this game's use of leitmotifs. In terms of leitmotif use, this one actually really resembles Chrono Trigger where the theme itself is a battle between Lavos' musical accompaniment and the protagonist's main theme. Toby took a page out of that book, where we have the antagonist's theme and the antagonist's innocent past's theme (carried on in spirit by the protagonist who takes that burden for themself) dueling back and forth.
The game then gives you an immediate reprisal on that same concept not a minute afterwards, really sealing the deal. youtube.com/watch?v=L6LPd0gDsJs except this time, the two themes are further intertwined. The evil theme of the game's villain is musically redeemed and presented in an atoning light, much like the villain himself, who you are determined to also redeem.
