Deep lore.
Non-forced consequences.
Characters who you would care about.
Appropriate violence.
Funny but racist jokes.

I miss the times when political opinions weren't put into video games
Paying full price for a completed game.
>90's games had trigger warnings
>I miss the times when I wasn't so easily triggered
ttfy
I miss low poly meshes with actual textures instead of just solid colors.
No voice acting garbage
They had to, old media was still hand over fist on bitching about anything in video games.
When you let the game sit there at the start menu, and it goes into demo mode.
>one thing akin to PARENTAL DISCRETION ADVISED before a murderfuckstabfest vs everything being censored or changed
I'll take the five second splash screen, doc.
Games don't do that anymore? I remember they'd play trailers and I forget which game, but one had a music video for it
I'm pretty sure the CoDs still play trailers but it's been a hot minute since I last played one.
i miss eyecandy women
they are all but gone.
>demo mode ingame
holy shit, I completely forget about them
This is my favorite intro of all time.
Unlockable stuff.
>beat game
>special thanks: you
>5 alternate costumes unlocked
>infinite ammo unlocked
>special mode unlocked
Not watching a movie every time I decide to play a game.
God Hand will forever have the best advisory screen.
You'd have to vo pretty far back for that. T
Games like Deus Ex were already pretty political.
...
Misogyny
Goddamn rhythm and action games! like Parappa and Gitaroo Man.
What game is this from? I vaguely remember seeing something like this when I was a kid.
Looks like Silent Hill 3 to me.
silent hill for PSX
I think what he means is that when games don't try to shove the political views/agenda of the developers into the game.
Like EA with their badly written gay characters or writing in characters that are basically Trump in everything but them name
silent hill
resident evil
Why would you pay money for a game someone else completed.
Silent Hill 1
Devs that weren't tryhard serious all the time.
Couldnt agree more OP. Seeing this is a game always gave me a sense of excitement as a child. It made you feel as if you were going to experience something genuinely terrifying and so scary that even the developers felt a warning was necessary, and as a kid that only multiplied the nervous excitement.
Luckily I replayed Dino Crisis recently and I still felt that same feeling as I ran the game.
>A vocie-over saying the title of the game
Very few games do this. Even Resident Evil dropped it with 7
I miss when everything wasn't so god damn serious and cinematic, its no fun anymore

>Very few games do this
I know. Eve the fucking Neputina games manage to do this.
Hell the Blanc vs Zombies game has it rotating voices
Jesus christ I love FFT
>Thanks you for buying
>I pirated it
Shantae and the Pirates Curse, Devil May Cry
>Thank you for playing
>I didn't play it
I felt like this after playing broken age part 1
But playing part 2 made me feel vindicated
I kinda miss the days in which you could slap a face on literally anything and call it a day; and then by whatever it happened to be you built a game around it.
>pacman
>it's round, so let's make it bounce
I feel very nostalgic watching this.
youtube.com
the fact that games weren't 90% business so they had more original ideas and mostly made games for the hell of it
Good gameplay.
Good Story.
Value for money.
Positive opinions towards developers.
Developers knowing their audience.
No forced SJW politics.
Wacky games.
No cinematic bullshit.
Good writing.
Trustworthy reviews.
No DLC.
No Microtransactions.
No Season Passes.
No pandering loli moe garbage in every Jap game.
No manfaced SJW lesbian turbo dyke landwhales in western games.
PC and Consoles being seperate things.
PC not being held back by consoles.
Online play not being overrun by 10 year olds.
No Youtube or Twitch pandering.
No memes.
Memorable characters.
Sequels being exciting and things to look forward to, not fear.
Franchises that exist because of interesting worlds built with love and care, not because they're an easy cash cow.
This was also part because games were quicker and easier to make back in the day because they weren't so obsessed over graphics
>things you miss from old games
>LITERAL trigger warnings
I want tumblrfats to leave. kys dumb trannyposter
When games came from japan that weren't weeb trash
I was thinking about this in terms of music and films earlier today. The only musician who everyone talks about and actually has artistic integrity is Kanye.
Yeezus and The Life of Pablo are fucking awful albums though.
In terms of film, it's the goddamn Marvel films and probably stuff like Mad Max and Pacific Rim.
There's been games with political elements in the 90s and 2000s before and DLC isn't inherently bad.
>they weren't so obsessed over graphics
>90% of Sup Forums for the last year has been shitposting over upscaled 4K and Zelda graphics
Gee, I wonder why devs are concerned about graphics.
passion
games that are complete packages
games that release in a functional state
games that have attention to detail
unlockable items and modes instead of purchasable ones
rts games
games not afraid to be different and take risks
wtf that's absolutely not true. Graphics have ALWAYS been a selling point in games. youtube.com
As a kid, that was interpreted as
>shit's gonna go down and you'll love every second of it
Im glad re7 does this. i really missed it
>Trustworthy reviews
I remember the first time the company I worked for told us we started taking pay for good review scores. It was activision paying us to give a good score to some licensed movie game. I think it was Lemony Snicket. I wrote up my honest opinion and gave the game a 5.5. My manager sent it back and told me I had to put a good spin on it. I refused to fold my opinion just for money and they fired me.
well, you're right, but in general games weren't as expensive to make as today, and that's mostly due to how costly is to make AAA graphics by today's standard
What is an example of a non-forced consequence?
>see this screen
>knew I was going to be in for a wild ride
It was like the seal of approval that you will be seeing original and genuinely scary things.
I think what he means is "political opinions I disagree with"
take me back
please
what the fuck are you talking about?
>no special thanks
>no alternate costumes
>infinite ammo only if you find all 33 coins on hardest difficulty
>special mode aint special, just a standard hard mode
yeah, on that point I'll agree with you. it's less about graphics becoming more important and more about what we're considering "good graphics" to be far more difficult to achieve now than back then. throw in resolution, framerate, physics engines, and eyecandy and modern devs have a lot more to consider
>complete games without patches and dlc
>physical manuals
>cheats and costumes were unlockables
>Save points
>no qtes
When games went full retard with joke endings, cheesy one-liners, nonsensical references and dumb unlockables.
Also cheat codes.
Sup Forums isn't relevant in the gaming community
Just wanted to piggyback off OP.
This is my favorite one.
Not knowing what would be in the RPD made this one that much more tense to me.
I really like the theme music for silent hill 1-3. They werent trying to be scary and have a bunch of cliche instruments and arrangements, they were trying to be sad and emotional. Because silent hill is a tragic story. Even (most) of the OST didnt have cliche horror themes in them like creepy pianos or scratching violins. Some did yeah, but they were few and far between. Silent Hill 2 had a lot of piano themes but they werent "creepy child playing piano music!!" they were genuinely good songs.
But thats not to say there werent some tracks in there that were trying to illicit the emotion of fear.

But it wasnt just all that. And even then it was unique.
yeezus is like 50% great 50% pure forgettable
>Pacman World 1
my nigga
but the thing about slapping a face on things and making it a game is that they have to be good. And pacman world 1 was fucking great.
youtu.be
I miss good music. I know atmospheric shit is better fitting for the games of today but still.
>I'm retarded
Okay.
>they have to be good
Not necessarily. You could just create whatever retarded thing you wanted and then watch it crash and burn.
capitilizing on this
youtube.com
good intros that kind of give you some taste of the game.
alright yeah, ill give you that one. Bubsy and Pepsi man are what come to mind for that. But it was still cool
Literally all of these are either your own personal problems or something that could be solved by playing good newer games instead of garbage. You could have played garbage 20 years ago too you retard.
Resident Hill Revelations 2: The Room
(not so) funny how nowadays consoles don't feel the need for a mascot anymore. Outside of the obvious Nintendo, the last one trying was MS with Blinx. Sony never really tried, Crash Bandicoot just happened to be it for the PS1 because it was a hit, and none in particular emerged during the PS2 era. After that the trend just died.
Besides OP, unlockable costumes are probably the main thing. Getting new costumes for a new playthrough was awesome.
Thats what im talking about. The theme isnt trying to be harsh and scary with jump cuts and harsh scratches and shit like with horror movies. The theme fits heather. Gives you almost a lost and emotionally drained feeling, but heather but a somewhat reckless adult has a rock theme to it.
granted you wouldnt realize this until after youve played the game, but its still a nice touch.
>THOSE
>FUCKING
>SPIDER-MAN ALTS
That's going to be alien to English native speakers, but playing enlish games for the first time was the shit. I remember Playing Okami, which wasn't localized in my language, in English, and back then I was kinda meh at it. There's the point in which you have to headbutt a crying kid to make him stop. The game blatantly tells you to do it, but I had no fucking idea what a HEADBUTT was. I even looked for it on the dictionary and of course it wasn't listed. I felt like a complete moron when out of frustration I attacked the kid.
>alternate costumes
>all with their own different effects on your stats/abilities
FUCK. I KNEW RESIDENT EVIL VII WAS MISSING SMOETHING.
>mfw I found out about Leon's mafia outfit in Resi 4 as a kid
>inb4 LAWL FEDORALORD EXDEE
Fuck you
Playing Japanese games in Asia is real something, to add. Back in the ps2 era, it's more likely that you'll get the JP version of the game than NA or EU.
Imagine having to play Musou and Super Robot games with moonrunes for 5 years.
Literally all of those are fact.
>*DING*
>"head butt" wasn't in the dictionary
Why not?
I think at this point people are starting to realize mascots were just starting to become name-brand-recognition cash grabs so companies stopped relying on them. Maybe its because the industry outgrew the need for them. Honestly I think mario and sonic where the ones that killed it. After several generations of game after game after game, people started to get tired of mario and sonic. But thats just me. The sale of mario stuff currently is proof that mario is still going strong.
people seem to be more interested in exclusives and console performance now. The only mascots I see now are the old ones being brought back from the dead for HD remakes, which are obvious cash grabs.
because a dictionary can't have every existing word, and that was on paper
It's even funnier because there isn't any gore in the game.
You just know they put it in there so they could show the picture of the guy getting kicked on the balls.
When Gene gets his arm cut off, it's pretty gorey-ish.
>Be dutch fag
>Learn english through vidya
>Classmate: user why are you so good at english
>Me: vidya
>Classmate: Wish my parents let me play those
>Invite him to play
>Become BBF
And they say videogames are good for nothing
What's the problem? Media did some free advertising for the developers
