The Switch dock powers 3 USB ports which means it does need a substantial amperage. Your typical 0.5a usb plug won't suffice
Also it's probably cheaper to do this kind of design than it is the cord-brick-cord design, and Nintendo seems to be cutting every possible corner with the Switch to maximize their profits

My phone charger does 2100mA and it's no larger than a regular phone charger from a few years ago. The apartment block that comes with the Switch is about as big as my laptop's power brick and that pumps out 65 watts, which is way, way past the needs of a tablet and a couple of USB ports.
