If I remember right you can find a Sages stone in it. Which can heal your entire party and you can use it as much as you want. Although the amount of HP healed is kinda small

Only erly DQ games had random gains. Now they all have fixed growths IIRC. You can max your stats with stat-boosting items, but they are always rare drops.

Yeah, and DQ III is also random, with your personality determining the % chance of stat gains.

Playing DQ8 on the ps2 for the first time, it's the best thing I've played in ages. Yangus is best bro. I couldn't stand Angelo at first but he's really growing on me.

Running spears, boomerangs, heroism on hero

Axes, humanity, scythes on yangus,

Whips, sex appeal, staves on Jessica

Bows, staves, charisma on Angelo.

Multithrust is sex

Just the seeds you find are not enough to max stats. You have to grind enemy drops for that.

There are exceptions in a few games, like monsters you recruit and special classes that max one stat or another, but they are exceptions and not present in every game.

All four characters will turn out solid like that. Just know that boomerangs fall behind later, but they are amazing early and mid-game.

And yeah, Angelo is written to be exactly that.

I'm cool with that, they put in solid work on large groups now, I just hit baccarat and very recently got the razor wing. With boomerang for groups and spears for single targets heroes doing great. Is heroism still worth maxing if I'm not maxing swords?

Heroism offers Kazap at max. It's probably worth leaving the tree after 1/2 mp costs if you other efficient ways of handling groups.

did 8 on the ps2 have random encounters? i appreciate how they're not random on the 3ds in the overworld but i kind of wish they were random in dungeons. its kind of lame how i can sprint through dungeons without any threat, running past any enemy i want. still loving the game tho

Nope, Gigaslash is a sword tech that upgrades to Gigagash if you also max Swords. But you are going to almost max it anyway, Omniheal and half MP cost are simply too good to pass.

I've never really got far in to any DQ. I was thinking of giving 8 a whirl, but I heard its quite long, so going to clear my other game before I start it and focus on it. Seems like my sort of thing.

My run time is 35 hours which is pretty much the standard JRPG time. 7 is the one that goes on forever (I'm like 25 hours into 7 and haven't even unlocked the class system yet)

I don't think you can lock yourself off from it. After you complete the Dark Ruins, visit Jessica's mother with her in the party and then stay a night in the inn. That should be all you have to do to open it up.

I think you can get it as early as you arrived at Maella abbey. That's much faster than having to get the gold rosary and combining it.

That's the thing, though. It's NOT rated Mature. Well, the 3DS version isn't. ESRB has it at Teen. I don't even remember the PS2's ESRB rating.
Anyway, Horii has always aimed for an All Ages rated from CERO, and because of how much stricter it's gotten since the PS2 days, the game as it was wouldn't have gotten All Ages, so the costumes had to be changed.

Your gains aren't random in DQ1, its all dependent on the first four letters of your name, some combinations give great growths, others give garbage growths.

You have to beat the game once, then after completing the first post-game dungeon, go back and talk to Jessica's mother. After that, everything should be self-explanitory

Jessica has 25 in Whips, 24 in Staves, and 26 in Sex Appeal
Hero is 33 in Swords, 20 in Boomerangs, and 30 in Courage
Yangus is 27 in Axes, 22 in Clubs 10 in Fists, and 27 in Humanity
Angelo is 22 in Swords, 15 in Staves and 27 in Charisma

I'm not sure if you can max out everything, maybe at level 99? But anyways from my experience the best way to play is to only invest points into two stats for each character; one weapon and the character's special trait.

If you reach level 99 you get 350 skill points, enough to max out three and a half skill charts. But you rarely want to max them out. You wasted those points on Clubs and Boomerangs, but this Dragon Quest, not Dark Souls. Any build is technically viable without a minimum of fuss, but some builds are just vastly superior to others.
