What went wrong?
>Trying to be X killer
That IS the problem, instead of making your own identity as game, you try to make a better clone game and fail.
What went wrong?
they didn't have scary larry writing the articles.
>Buying mazagines in the XXI century
PSM Cover Thread?
...
Has there ever been any franchise killer on video games? Something that makes people say " This is so good i will stop playing that other game forever" even when the other game hasn't lost any charm or quality?
Does anybody remember when GamePlayers became Ultra GamePlayers?
...
Hell yeah I do. A lot of the Game Players team went on to PSM as well when Ultra went under.
Dark Cloud isn't even similar to Zelda.
...
CoD didn't killed MoH?
I specifically remember being subscribed to Nintendo Power during the only time in my life where I did not own the Nintendo console of the generation. I've never owned a GameCube and I just had it for GBA. So I got to see Wind Waker, Metroid Prime, and the Star Fox Adventure article with a picture of Krystal that ended up turning me into a furfag for life even though I still never played it. I was retarded.
Nothing, Dark Cloud and Dark Cloud 2 are some of the best action JRPGs of all time.
I remember fapping to this one back in the day. Those where happier times.
The game is nothing like zelda though besides the main character having a green hat and other bare bones fundamental shit like they use a sword and fight enemies in dungeons.
>Zelda Killer
>Can't even do backwards walking right
I remember seeing that issue and wanting it for that reason.
me too
...
This.
>pulled out a few random old mags from the basement a while back ago
Keira > Ashlin any day.
I miss vidya being a boys club
Man.
Nostalgia sure is painful.
Nothing, Dark Cloud 2 is one of the best RPG's of all time
That top pick.
Muh dick.
From now until the end of time.
Also I'm still mad when they ported soul caliber to 360 thy took out the main single player mode like what's that about fuck you until this shit is fixed and titles like D2 and stuff are ported I'm keeping the dream alive as it were.
>one of the best
Taking photos of EVERYTHING IN SIGHT was a fucking chore. I want to play an RPG, not an Instagram sim. Though how you leveled up your weapons was interesting this time around.
Monica is cute as hell too.
>magazines would have fake 'nude' codes for various games
>everyone was okay with it
>game has a female character now
>"male fantasy insert!" "damsel in distress!" etc
Reading some of them reminded me of when information was so scares they'd make stuff up, like the name of games would be different in various publications.
PSM was ahead of its time.
It was only compared to Zelda because the MC had a green hat. Plus DC games were better than Zelda anyway.
Any examples?
I only ever subscribed to Nintendo Power. I was a die hard Nintendo fan until the Wii. Resident Evil 4 never ever gaystation poo.
I should get them from my parents place before they decide to "make space" and I have another /vr/ horrorstory.
Not off the top of my head, but I'll thumb through them again for examples another time. A lot of PS1 and N64 games had weird titles.
>FFT cover
Godlike
Is there a place that hosts full scans of Playstation Magazine? I wouldn't mind looking through the old issues I used to own.
Damn, have never seen this one before
Joe Mad was on point in the 90s
DC 1 was fun as fuck
>that ost
...
Man, Joe Mad was soo fucking good. I loved his X-Men and Battlechasers. Is he still good or has he gone the frank miller way?
But I'm pretty sure they didn't market it as a Zelda killer. I mean one magazine can come up with that basic comparison but it doesn't necessarily mean that's how it was made and marketed.
>reading through old magazines
>writers and readers would share their hopes and hype for the future
>reading old console concepts
>looking at previews of cancelled games that the articles looked forward to
That Regina and Chun Li were fap material for years.
I haven't really seen any new Frank Miller art.
Why can't games journalism be this enthusiastic about video games? What happen to the fun and love? Don't tell me I'm just growing up!
He's still got it.
Before games were about bringing you something you had never experienced before, now games feel like they're made just to sell. There's no soul in the product, it's all become predictable and played out.
Dark Cloud seriously needs a modern day sequel. Could make such an improved game
No wonder why I have more fun with japanese indie games than with AAA games.
People no longer wanted to pay for physical media considering they can just get all the info online.
I miss it so much Sup Forums you don't even know.
...I just noticed.
>BIGGEST HOLIDAY GAMES REVIEWED
>FF IX
God, where does the fucking time go?
It's because they're more expensive to produce now. Before you could create a good game with 10 people and a couple million dollars, now it takes 100 people and 39 millon dollars, so companies don't wan't to risk it and use formulas to create games. It's similar to movies and tv shows. Just play it safe and copy what's popular.
He did Darksiders and he is working on a Battle Chasers game right now.
Her face looks atrocious and yet somehow still better than what the character actually looks like
i wonder how this user felt when he saw the image in the op and thought 'hey i have that!'
probably killing himself right now i would imagine
So why is the franchise dead?
I loved it man. I worked in a videoclub when I was 16. I would get 3 or 4 magazines a month snd friends would come by and bring snaks and we would spend slow days watching movies and reading the magazines, sperging over new releases and funny articles, toyfare, wizard, psm, opm, those were the fucking days. Now I get my news reading a mongolian photo website while shitting at work. What the fuck happened?
>Tfw I had a good amount of PSM magazines only one issue is missing it's pic related
>tfw Someone stole it.
For the games that do this marketing, yes it's the problem. Why the fuck would I want to play an imitation when I can play the real thing? Nobody who tries to make a killer ever considers this.
He's been working on that game since forever. Hopefully it really comes out.
>Adam Warren art
hhnnnnnnnnnng.
>Them April Fools Joke
Some of them were obvious some seemed plausible and since the internet was at it's infancy you didn't know what to believe until you either figured you were reading and April Magazine or they flat out said it in the next month's issue
I miss it, man.
And he's also going to do three more issues of the Battle Chasers co... the Battle Chasers comipffffhahahaha
Not happening with a straight face, sorry
>canadian book is only $1 more
oh how times have changed
I remember PSM or EGM announced Kingdom Hearts in an April issue and everyone thought that was the April fools joke
Persona 3 to other weeb games
Did they call it a "Zelda killer" just because the main character wore a green hat?
>*chika instensifies*
They compared it to Zelda when the two had nothing alike.
Dark Cloud is the shit.
PSM was overall the best Magazine there was. I think the only other magazine that rivaled it was EGM.
I miss when Adam Warren was capable of drawing decently.
These were the two I subscribed to. Too bad they both magically went to shit when the PS3 launched and video games became a hobby for serious, mature adults only.
>For the magazine art that has mixture of weebaboo and western comic book designs
This is really comfy. Is there an archive of all of these?
I lost respect for PSM when they were reviewing the Ghost in the Shell SAC game on ps2, and kept comparing the controls to Halo. In fact, they kept talking about halo throughout the whole issue. It pissed me off. Still kept buying it though.
Well I blame the internet, Some of them wanted to be first on the scene with BREAKING NEWS. PAYED.
Dan "Shoe" Tsu got shit for bringing that shit up
>That lid sticker
Hah. I actually had that on my playstaion. It was second hand from my brother though, so I never had the magazine it come from or anything.
To this day a sticker-less ps1 still looks weird to me.
No idea. I did nab about 100+ issues of game mags the other day though
>You are beginning to feel thirsty
You have no idea what the Shen Long joke did to my arcade...
>EGM before the redesign
>Official US Playstation
I'm dead. I'm literally dead.
This is actually current year now.
Why wasn't the comic properly published or compiled to a book is beyond me.
Nice
I bought some PSMs on ebay today but I'm sure you got a better deal.
I hardly read GamePro but I liked the fact that their reviewers all had these cartoon alter egos. Reviewers in other mags were just names, but that idea made the review crew really memorable and gave the review section a ton of color and personality.
NINTENDOMINATION
...
Oh man it's been like 15 years since I've seen these. Fuck I miss EGM
used to read PSM mags on the bus , everyday to and from school .
>lid stickers
>memory card stickers
>posters
>reading walkthroughs for games i haven't even played, read their whole RE2 walkthrough on day .
my favorite part is the back pages where they answered questions that people sent in
Chris Slate was my homie
They published a few singles before EGM died, might still be available somewhere.
It was free. Someone tossed it out in recycling. About a ton of gamepro from 92-02 and a mix of die hard gamer, #1-4 of psm and some egm and early issues of next generation.
They have an artical about the future of them new online gaming in 1995. Really tears me up reading about all that hope and dreams.
>every game became a copy paste experience treadmill
I'm still upset.
Any online console games these days worth a fuck? I'm already on the Resident Evil Outbreak fanserver.
There are people that probably think this game is still a Zelda killer. I'll let that sink in.
I keep all of my old Nintendo Power issues up in the attic, but that one deserved a spot on my bookshelf.
I loved the Super Mario and Legend of Zelda comics.
Peach was a fucking badass and looked cute as FUCK.
Oh, that's extra nice then.
I'll admit that when I first got my PS2 and I saw the Dark Cloud box at Hollywood Video, I did mistake it for a Zelda knockoff because of the cover. All it showed was Toan's face and it made his hat look like the same thing as Link's. You couldn't even see the rest of the character to see the design was completely different. Also couldn't gleam anything from the back of the box because they only had the cover printed for all of their games at that store. I passed that game up several times because of this.
Then I saw a commercial for it. The gameplay and characters looked nothing like Zelda. It mentioned rebuilding and customizing the world which was also nothing like Zelda. After that ad, the next time we went to Hollywood Video, Dark Cloud was the first game I went for because the commercial had me sold. Wound up buying my own copy later.
Point being, PSM was fucking retarded as, despite the piss poor cover, Dark Cloud was not trying to imitate or go up against Zelda and none of the marketing made it seem that way. PSM just wanted to sell copies of the mag. Just a precursor to clickbate.

Another?
>advertising booth babes
oh lawd just imagine the autistic screeching if a gaming publication did this today
