The only times sewers are good is if they're completely optional and you can use them as shortcuts underneath a city when you want to do a stealthy playthrough. The only game were I can tolerate sewers is probably Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines, but ONLY the Santa Monica sewers. Those sewers were ideal. They were small and easy to navigate, and you had an exit manhole that lead to somewhere in the city every few steps you took. There were only like a couple of instances where you had to explore deeper and fight certain enemies, but they didn't keep you there for longer than a few minutes at a time unless you wanted to be there. But fuck all the other sewer systems in the game later on, especially the last one where you're stuck there for waaaaay to fucking long. Fuck sewers.
If you have to make an entire level or dungeon in a sewer, you're doing it wrong. I should be in and out, and only occasionally run into a monster of fight scene in specific situations like with the Santa Monica sewers.
