The only really bad period for the series was between 2003 and 2008 (yes, Sonic Heroes is shit).

After that they never really offended me. Generations is overrated but there's a lot worse things a game could be.

F

Generations
Colors
Sonic Unleashed (the non werehog parts)

Sonic 1
Sonic 2
Sonic 3 + knickles
Sonic adventure
Sonic adventure 2
Sonic generations

>(yes, Sonic Heroes is shit).
I thought that was popular opinion. Who the hell thinks Sonic Heroes is any good besides Sonic fans? I played the fuck out of Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 and couldn't stand Sonic Heroes.

The handheld games (Sonic Advance and Rush) were okay. Not great, but okay.

there wasnt a decent sonic game since S3K

There isn't really anything that bad about it on a single playthrough level (other than the boss fights). It doesn't waste your time with half assed playstyles like the Adventures either, the only problem is the "replay x3 times to beat the game" thing

Always thought about getting Colors. Is it actually bareable?

Regardless of what you think of how they handled the gameplay types in Sonic Adventure, the core game itself was competent. Sonic Heroes was not. It was slippery, it felt floaty and insubstantial, and controlling multiple characters was fiddly at best.

Not liking the physics is more of a personal thing than an actual flaw with the game tho. Character switching worked fine, check out a speedrun and see how well it flows in the hands of a skilled player: youtube.com/watch?v=SJv2og1KoHs

You're kidding right?

SA1 was the last decent game, SA2 was just the start of the shit parade.

I know its flaws and the cringefest that it is, but it's still fun as fuck.

>controlling multiple characters was fiddly at best.

>HERE WE GO
>GOT IT
>HERE WE GO
>LET'S GO
>GO IT
>HERE WE GO
>LET'S GO

Sonic Adventure 2 was the start of the downward slide. It demonstrated things that would eventually come to plague the series through the dark age and, in itself, was not as much fun to play as SA1.

However I still think it was a good game, despite the flaws. Its successors are the ones that fucked up.

Not that guy but i couldn't stand the alien power up gimmicks thing, i found no enjoyment in using them and they force you to use them all the fucking time. That said it is one of the few decent sonic games if you can stand that shit, few good games period on the wii.

I don't remember what the controls were like but i suspect emulating it with a standard controller is the preferred way.

SA2 still had some enjoyable stages, mostly Sonic and Shadow with a handful of Rouge and Knuckles. The only bad ones I can remember were Tails and Eggman stages. I can't recall a single stage in Sonic Heroes though, let alone one that I enjoyed playing.

Tails and Eggman's stages could have been better if they had been shorter. As it is they're slow and really long in the tooth.

>tfw knuckles will die in your lifetime

>no Sonic and the Secret Rings
>no Sonic and the Black Knight

Shadow the Hedgehog, cringey as it was, was pretty fun gameplay wise at least.

SA2 was not a good game.

The terrible physics is an objective flaw with the game.

Egg Fleet has better level design than anything in SA1 or SA2.

Shadow had all of the same problems that Heroes did, which only made it worse because they had a whole game to engineer out the issues with the engine (Heroes has somewhat of an excuse by being a slapdash port to the Renderware platform when it was originally pitched as a GC/Xbox custom engine game).

It had some good ideas. I like the level design, the branching story (though the fact you have to play through it so many times is annoying, even if that is possibly due more to the unpleasant controls), and the gunplay isn't nearly as offensive as it's made out to be.

Again, them being terrible is entirely your anecdotal opinion. Check out the video I posted and you'll find that they are both very manageable and allow for extremely cool momentum exploits.

The worst part of SA2 was being stuck playing through shit stages to get to good ones. and worst of all playing through stage types you didn't like to get to ones you did.

Hiding speed stages behind exploration stages is fucking bullshit, they never should have changed the SA1 character select = routes style.

Shadow had worse controls than Heroes. As you said, they had a whole game to iron out the issues with the engine and it somehow ended up worse.

Oh, sure. The Advance Trilogy is good, the Rush Trilogy is fine, Unleashed is good, Colors is good, Generations is great, Generations on PC is fantastic.

Hell, if you're willing to look at fangames there are tons of great ones to look at like Before the Sequel, Megamix, After the Sequel, Green Hill Paradise, Utopia, Chrono Adventure, Roboblast 2, the list goes on.

Just because you can adapt to it doesn't make them any less shitty.

>Sonic 1 in the good category
How about no?

I liked it even though I haven't played a sonic game in a decade

Just because you claim something is shitty doesn't make it shitty.

I'm one of the biggest Sonic fans you'll meet and I agree. Anyone who likes Sonic 1 has likely not played past Green Hill Zone. Sonic 2 got the speed element down, CD got the exploration down and 3 got the combination of the two down, making the perfect balance.

>The Advance Trilogy is good
Only 1 is decent, the rest are mediocre flash game tier.
>the Rush Trilogy is fine
Boost to win with the worst case of bottomless pit level design in the series?
>Unleashed is good
Boost to win with a shitty GoW clone thrown in for good measure?
>Colors is good
The game with 95% clunky 2D platforming and 5% running in a straight line?
>Generations is great
It's average at best. They fucked up the Classic Sonic physics and half of Modern's levels are tedious garbage, Planet Wisp being the worst offender.

SA2 was the last good Sonic game. Amazing Sonic controls and levels, great exploring and platforming in fleshed out side characters, top tier boss fights, 10/10 music, an actual serious story that had a philosophically developed conflict.

Shadow the hedgehog was cringy and edgy and the controls were bad but was a lot of fun. Also the intro was hella cool. Never beat it more then once cause I didn't have a memory card

The fact that you defend Heroes this vehemently leads me to believe that you have very low standards for what constitutes a good Sonic game.

>Implying that SA2 was good

Generations was the first game i truly enjoyed since Sonic 3, also fuck yeah transformed.

>Only 1 is decent, the rest are mediocre flash game tier.

Advance 2 is one of my favorite games in the series, be nice.

I personally thought it was the only game to get high-speed gameplay for Sonic done right.

Also the level design could take you in many different directions.

I still think 2>3 I dunno why but for as good as 3 gets, I still prefer to play 2.

>SA2 was the last good Sonic game. Amazing Sonic controls
The controls never get mentioned enough, imo. I really liked Generations but goddamn were the 3D controls untight compared to SA2.

yeah
Unleashed Project mod, Colors and Generations, and Lost World isn't that bad, don't fall for the memes

I never once called it good, simply pointed out that you sucking at the physics =/= the physics being bad and provided video proof to go along with it. All you could scramble up in response is "i-it's shitty, it's an objective flaw!"

Modern Sonic is good at going fast but he was definitely not made for platforming like SA2 or even 06 Sonic was. He controls too much like a tank.

I've beaten the game twice user. Don't defend what is clearly a bad game with horrible, slippery controls.

If you want to play Sonic and have nothing but fun, just play these games:
Sonic 1
Sonic 1 (Master System)
Sonic 2
Sonic 2 (Master System)
Sonic CD
Sonic Chaos (Master System)
Sonic 3&K
Sonic Adventure
Sonic Adventure 2
Sonic Advance
Sonic Advance 2
Sonic Rush
Sonic Rush Adventure
Sonic Colours
Sonic Generations

Other "can be fun, but" games:
Sonic Heroes
Sonic and the Secret Rings
Sonic Unleashed
Sonic and the Black Knight
Sonic 4 (Ep 1 + 2)
Sonic Lost World

Unfun games:
Sonic Triple Trouble
Knuckles Chaotix
Sonic Blast
Sonic 3D
Sonic Advance 3
Shadow the Hedgehog
Sonic 06

Advance 1 and 2.
Sonic Rush. They messed up the sequel with unnecessary boat trips though.
Unleashed PS360, Colors, Colors ds, Generations and the karting game.

Home consoles were the problem, main problem was 06 and Shadow. And the early Wii ones.

Heroes is mediocre, but I still go back to play some stages like Grand Metropolis or Egg Fleet. You can skip most of those enemies with huge health bars so...

Going back to SA2 I can't enjoy it that much. Hunting is worse in half stages than was in SA1. Shooting was 90% bad for Tails, half were fine with Eggman and made sense, but fuck those icy physics that seem like Knuckles in Heroes with "SHIT ORAH".
Sonic had 6 levels, Metal Harbor is short as fuck. Shadow had 4 and Grind Level doesn't even fell like a level. Levels were way too linear compared to the first game.
And fuck that karting and those missions.

No sonic game is simply fun without strings attached

>he doesn't want to feel the sunshine while livin' in the city

I thought I was just bad at it when I was younger until replaying it recently and it turned out to be much worse than I remembered.
They should have just gone with SA3 instead of that garbage.

Also is it just me or are the graphics in Heroes a lot worse than SA1 and SA2?
Fuck Rail Canyon.

Lrn2airboostandstomp

...

You could say that about pretty much any game.
I wasn't implying they were perfect, only that you will enjoy most of your time with them.

Sonic 2, 3&K and Generations are pretty much without strings.

Nigga, I'm super sonic racing all the time, but I'm under no illusions that it's a good game.

BetterSADX is pretty great, why did no one tell me about this?

>Also is it just me or are the graphics in Heroes a lot worse than SA1 and SA2?
>worse than SA1

If you played the PS2 version, sure. GC and Xbox, nope. What is weird is how shiny are the characters

True, but anyone that played the other Sonic games should play at least once Sonic R. Even for a newcomer you could finish that in hour with all characters unlocked, or half if just racing. The only thing you need to do is use the damn triggers to drift corners to make the game enjoyable, instead of just going against the corners like a retarded while just using the dpad or analog stick.

Sonic R without friends is not fun at all.
