I honestly hated Eggman until Pollock.

If he stops being Eggman I'm pretty much done with Sonic.

SA2 Eggman was a legitimately nasty guy, it was pretty cool.

But Pollock is hilarious and pretty much IS Eggman.

You remember the mince meat line from SA1?

>Eggman: When I was a child, I looked up to my grandfather for all the great things he accomplished in his life. He was my hero, and I wanted to be a great scientist like him! But...did he really mean to destroy us?
>Tails: I dunno, but what I do know is...we all did it together!
>Eggman: [Fondly] ...you're right.

You tell me OP

He can pull both off surprisingly well, so I'm honestly not sure.

Depends what's the tone of the setting. IE SATAM and AOSTH.

Sucks that after SA1 and 2 he went back to being the goofy idiot. In those games he was the perfect mixture of being much more sinister and threatening than previous versions, but not overly terrifying like the SATAM version.

>not overly terrifying like the SATAM version.
Dude, he fucking threatened to kill Amy at gun point.

Eggman is consistently the best character no matter game, cartoon, comic writer, etc. It doesn't matter if he's being a legit villain or a joke.

He should be a mix of both. Let him be menacing when he has the upper hand but let him be comedic when he's alone or after he loses. This kind of goofy shit is too far.

I liked him the best in unleashed and sa2. Those behind the scenes where orbot is calling him retarded smugly and then he beats his shit is legit hilarious.

Don't you mean Robotnik?

Middle ground Eggman is best.

...

They really need to consolidate the two. He's always going to be the star of the show thanks to Mike Pollock getting all the best lines and having delivery that blows the other VAs out of the water, but I wouldn't mind him making his same old jokes AS WELL AS doing some seriously insane shit. Maybe we'll get that in Project 2017 - it does look thematically darker than the last few games after all.

Pisses me off that they've never brought up Gerald and Maria since Shadow The Hedgehog. I'm not asking for a whole heap of melancholy bullshit but now that he has an established childhood and family, it'd be nice to get the odd reference here and there to how it influenced his trajectory towards mad science

Does Japan like him?

So, in the comics he's essentially taken over the world, right? I never really got that, the dude has a legitimate empire in the Archie universe.

You can be funny and threatening at the same time. I wish they'd balance him more often.

Sega Of America pls go

In the reboot, he controls at least half of the world, with the other half under control of the United Federation.

He's so cheesy, it's amazing.

Still not as creepy though.

Man did Jim Cummings do a hell of a job making him sound as creepy as fuck.

This game had such shitty writing but everything that comes out of his mouth is gold.

>Soon the world will only have one thing on it's mind
>What's that boss?
>...Me

Bristow made him sound menacing, not creepy.

>People have been sitting on those rides
>With their BUTTS
That delivery was wonderful.

Exactly. He managed to do a perfect "Eggman" without resorting to sounding overly creepy like Cummings.

>If you experience explosive decompression, please try to avoid staining the seat cushions. Those things are expensive!

A bit of both. He needs to be a serious character with a goofy style and personality. Sonic CD did him best.

Tails could have said "Shut the fuck up Eggman" and the scene would be unchanged.

There's unused lines where Tails and Eggman say they'll be enemies again after this.

Who's Eggman?

That's Robotnik

see stop sucking the cartoons dick. Your childhood was a lie

While we're at it, Sonic never lived on "Mobius" in the games either

>Plan has Eggman on it
>Makes the Egg Robos
>Makes the Death Eggs
>Badniks were just robots in Japan
You westerners set yourself up for that retcon by changing his name in the first place, they were nice enough to make Robotnik his family name in canon at least.

We can both Agree that Adler's Snively was better though

Eggman is his family friendly persona that he brands his many corporations with. Robotnik is his real name.

Why is he doing the shocker at me

*Last name

You're implying "Eggman" is supposed to be his first name? Obviously not, since it's preceded by "Dr" without another name after it.

Man this pairing was great

Dr. Ivo 'Eggman" Robotnik

>Ivo
>Ovi
>Oviposition

It's still a good name but...goddamnit SoA

You can't phrase it like that, nobody would call him "Eggman Robotnik"
Dr. Ivo Robotnik aka "Dr. Eggman"

I think he's better as a comedic bad guy. Mostly because it fits towards his design rather then "I'm going to kill you now blah blah blah..."

That said, I do enjoy his role when he's a serious bad guy. More so towards Adventure and Adventure 2.

>i dont know how to write names

This is an undeniable fact.

Not an argument

Get it

Whos saying you have to phrase it like that.

Eggman is his nickname which is why is written like this "Eggman".

Ex. Mile "Tails" Prower

>Colors
>Shitty writing
Better then most Sonic games.

So you could call him "Tails Prower" or "Miles Prower"
That's what that phrasing means.

The overall plot of Colors was better than many Sonic games, but the dialogue (between Sonic and Tails) was pretty bad.

You know what I miss? I miss when Sonic games were actually thematically linked, story-wise
>Sonic 2 starts off the story of the ancient tribes that fought over the emeralds, Death Egg's first appearance
>Sonic 3 & Knuckles further establishes the Echidna tribe, Knuckles comes in, Angel Island, Death Egg round 2, and the jap manuals mention the ancient dragon (Chaos) that destroyed Echidnan society
>Sonic Adventure fleshes out the lore of the emeralds, Knuckles' tribes extinction and Chaos, introduced Chao which were the origin of Chaos
>Adventure 2 fleshes out Eggman's family line, continues on from Adventure in many plot threads, lots of stuff on the ARK was a direct throwback to the Echidna tribe and Chaos stuff from SA1
>Sonic Battle directly ties together the fact that Gerald did in fact do extensive research on Angel Island, introduces the Gizoids and Emerl
>Sonic Advance 3 brings back Emerl, rebuilt as Gemerl and has some more Angel Island shenanigans on Chaos Angel
>Shadow The Hedgehog and Sonic Chronicles try to advance Shadow and the Echidna's storylines in meaningful ways but are unfortunately both dire shitty games
>They shy away from ever linking anything back to the grand overarching lore ever since 2006 tarnished the series reputation for good
I'm not asking for a masterpiece in narrative but I quite liked how each game developed a little bit more of Sonic's world.

Eggman is at his best when he's both funny and a serious threat, alternating appropriately.

Robotnik sounded like a remorseless serial killer in Tails' story.

>Sonic 2 starts off the story of the ancient tribes that fought over the emeralds
when?

What the actual fuck did Tails even mean by that.
That and saying "All's well that ends well" while standing over the flooded ruins of Station Square.

Too bad Shadow the hedgehog literally threw SA2's story under a fucking bus. SA2 was a decent enough plot but when you threw in ultra edgy space alien demons shit got stupid. Worse is the fact is that it tossed a million non canon endings to to justify the good vs evil level change mechanic.

Japanese manuals. It's also pretty clear that this was the angle they were going for with the scrapped Hidden Palace Zone.

The PC collection story of Sonic 3 is really long.

>In his previous adventure, Sonic destroyed Dr. Eggman's base, the Death Egg; now the debris has started its fall to Earth. And right in the path of the falling base floats a giant cloud-like mass. The giant shadow of Death Egg hides the cloud... Towering mountains, a gigantic forest... the cloud is none other than the legendary floating island, suspended in the sky.

>The Death Egg became a fireball and hit the floating island; mountains were destroyed, the forests decimated...

>This disastrous event greatly alters the island's path, forcing it towards the Earth.

>The island crashes into the sea surface. The impact creates a gigantic wave, but the island doesn't sink. The floating island now sits on the sea surface as if nothing happened.

>Many days pass...

>On an island far from where the floating island hit the sea surface, Tails, a two-tailed fox, read a strong Chaos Emerald reaction on the Jewel Reader, a machine he has developed.

>"Maybe this has something to do with that big wave I saw a few days ago..." he said.

>Thinking there may be trouble, he decided to consult with Sonic.

>At the same moment, while relaxing on the beach, Sonic found a small ring washed up on shore. Sonic looked at the ring carefully, and noticed some ancient characters carved on it.

>The ring reminded Sonic of a legend he once heard about a "mystery island."

>In an ancient time, the "mystery island" was part of the main continent. A people with an extraordinary culture inhabited it. That civilization had built a peaceful and happy society using the energy of something they called "The Mighty Stone". But at a certain point, a faction of dark-minded elders tried to steal the energy of the stone, and by accident made that energy explode.

It goes on like this

Yeah, I hate the plot of Shadow The Hedgehog. I choose to believe the entire thing isn't canon. Biolizard is based on the ancient murals of Chaos, Shadow is based on the ancient murals of Sonic and there's absolutely no alien involvement. I'm putting my head in the sand with that one.

I AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAM all of me

Deem bristo>Pollock

Ideally a mix of both but I feel like he was never both in anything. It's always either really menacing (SA2, SATAM, what they attempted in 06) or really goofy (modern Sonic games, AoStH)

Even in the Classic days, they kept switching him back and forth. In the games, he was an asshole that wanted to pollute the earth but then you have stuff like the Sonic OVA and Man of the Year where he's a complete goofball.

I don't think it really matters anyway though since no matter what, Eggman is always the best part of Sonic.

Comedic serious villain. The thing about Sonic is, due to the wacky setting Eggman can pull this off.

The OVA managed to make him quite the joker (and pedophile towards Sara apparently) but at the same time he had a few threatening lines, Metal Sonic was badass and he almost managed to destroy the whole planet.

Something like OVA Eggman's characterization but with a few moments like the "you just told me fox boy" scene from SA2 littered in here and there would be the perfect Eggman as far as I'm concerned. Pollock could 100% pull it off - it's just the current writers that couldn't.
