It was particularly egregious for the Dreamcast considering how expensive the VMUs were

>tfw deleting my brother's 100% FFVII save to make some space for Bubsy

Good times.

Damn kids back in my day we couldn't save games at all. Now get off my lawn.

>100 mb virtual memory card
Thanks /currentyear/

Memory cards were a scam

The VMUs having a mini-game/letting you trade shit/being a part of the game itself fascinated me. Sort of like a Wii U screen before the Wii U.

>youngfags will never know the pain of writing down a 16 bit code to recall your game.

>that feel when later titles took 2 and sometimes even 3 blocks to save

I got an offbrand playstation memory card that was literally 8 memory cards in one. You could change memory card by pressing select + R1/L1 or something. Worked as well as a normal memory card.

>mfw I was transferring backup saves from my older brother's card and accidentally deleted his 70% FF2 save
>years later, accidentally deleted his FFXII save
I am so fucking sorry.

They have it worse, ps4 has no space for anything.

Diablo took at least 10 blocks, Hexen took almost all of them
I had a blue one that had 2 cards in one. It came with a cute Dualshock keychain that I lost and can't find now, feels bad man

>literally paying to save

nostaligafags will TRY and defend this

>playing diablo on anything but a computer

user y tho...

>playstation kid calling other youngfags

it'll never not make me raff

I actually bought a memory card yesterday and it was full of +50 hour saves of FF7 to 9
is that long for FF? I kinda feel bad for deleting all that progress

They're probably 100% or close to that.

Some game stores in my location still sell in the box never used ones. Sony really made a killing with the memory cards.

>tfw sister deleted my 100% save on Mickeys racing adventure
>there was even an empty save slot available

Depends if the guy did extra content.

>parents got me used ps1 with SOTN
>no memory card
>leave PlayStation on for days while playing through it
>mom accidentally unplugs the ps1 while vacuuming
>everything lost to time forever
Got a men card later on and all was well but god damn those were horrible times. I lent the ps1 to my cousin and never saw it again. Fucking bastard broke it.

i put 100 plus hours into ff 7 thru 9 and still didnt 100 percent them.

i play all those games like ff and chill

>tfw gamecube memory card corrupted all the fucking time thanks to turok

goddamn nightmare, had to finish it in 1 sitting.

I remember buying some 16-in-one? memory card that had like 256 slots total. Too bad it died out in like a month.

At the beginning, full-length JRPGs, like Legend of Legaia, could fit in one slot. Sony must've told devs to bloat up save data so they could make more memory card bucks.

personally I average ~90 hours in ff9 whenever I play it, but usually do most of the side content.

>you will never know the pain of leaving your console on overnight to not lose progress and finding out it's been turned off

...

>not buying another memory card

I had like 5 memory cards as a kid.
How the fuck did people have to struggle with this?

They weren't even that expensive.

>not having multiple memory cards
>not having a card dedicated to rpg maker and 2 others for games

I bought a memory card adapter a few years ago and transferred all my old PS1 saves to PC.
Later on I deleted them all, because you know what? If I'm going to go back to a game I'm going to actually fucking replay it.
I don't find much joy in loading up an end-game file and being all "wow look at all that shit I did a few years ago"

jrpgs were not the problem. off the top of my head i remember that syphon filter 2 took 3 slots. there were others but the titles escape me.

>Legend of Thor on Mega Drive
>tfw you could save your progress using a button cell battery
TECHNOLOGY

I remember walking a couple miles to K-Mart and buying memory cards. For some reason, 1 memory card was the same price as 2. I was always a little antsy about using non-OEM memory cards so I always put my official saves on Sony cards, but those Performance memory cards never failed on me.
I remember we had one that was fucking green and had no brand name on it. I didn't trust that one at ALL.

>youngfags will never know the pain of playing online on console in the mid 90s

Same thing happened to me with a gamecube and metroid prime. I think I got a little past phendrana drifts before losing my progress for one reason or another.

>egregious

What the fuck am I reading

neither will most older posters, user.

my friend had that. i think it was the 100 slots or somethig. always used to gloat and convince us to buy one. then it died on hi, one day with all his saves

Having multiple memory cards and writing on them what was saved on them was the best thing ever

>too poor to have one
>just paused the game and kept it on overnight
>mom would turn it off when I'm at school because we weren't rich enough for the electricity bill, she'd say

>not having 6 memory cards
The shitty bootleg ones that came in a 3 pack and had trouble with fitting in the console still retain the saves after all these years while the original ones shat themselves.

>be me
>had single memory card
>saved and deleted off it for years
>upgraded to ps2
>never touched ps1 again
>years later find ps2
>find memory card
>realize it had no sony branding on it
> had NOTHING on it at all
>still had its saved data after all those years
everything went better than expected

>he doesn't run doom on his camera
youtube.com/watch?v=k-AnvqiKzjY

>years later find ps1

fuck im tired

Sorry bro only 59 blocks

In the time it took you to make that post you could have just typed the word into google and found out its meaning

Wow you saved 20MB of data on your hard drive.
You know you can just decide not to use the save after all, right?

thats fucking GOAT.

why does a camera need that much power in the first place....

>mom I need a memory card
I ALREADY GOT YOU A GAME MAYBE FOR CHRISTMAS

Jokes on you, I already gleaned it's meaning from the context. I just wanted you to think I was one of the aforementioned youngfags. Guess my epic ruse paid off in the end. I'll be going to bed with an erection tonight.

so you're like 40 or some shit?

This is god damn amazing

>tfw unlocking all of the characters in Tekken 3 everyday because no memory card

Also spent $10 on the adapter. And spent an hour or two transferring the saves off and converting them to Dexdrive format.
Just saying.

It's been confirmed that they literally did this during the PS2 days.
They actually cockblocked a few Gust games because their save files weren't large enough.

Sony will find the pettiest ways to be total jews.

>that much power

I think you are underestimating the simplicity of Doom. Lightsources may have seemed like hard work to Carmack in 1993, but his computer was top of the line, 10,000 dollars, and only had 16 megs of ram.

Not him, But I got a Ps1 at like 13 when it launched.

Sounds like a bitter old twat

Civilization 2 took 10 slots if not more.

>youngfags will never know the pain of games have NO SAVES and having to write down codes to get back to where you were, that is if it even has codes

>implying i didnt have to do this with flash games

>Memory cards

Back in my day, you were lucky if a video game had save files. Most of the time you either had to deal with a password system or beat the game in one sitting.

dont forgot they paid off companies so only their console could get the online modes. its the reason why some of the tony hawk & madden games didnt have online for the xbox

I had an 8-in-1 memory card, never had this issue.

Well shit he's done literally everything in the game, why would he go back and play on his 100% save?

I still keep my pocket notepad full of bomberman codes somewhere.

>mfw i still remember some mm2 and 3 codes up to this day

i was more refering to the camera having all the necessary components to actually play a game on it.

but your probably right, doom is probably just that simple

>tfw game gives you codes and saving you to give jew money to memory cards

thanks gta 2

>youngfags will never know the pain of choosing what save files to delete to free up the space for the new game you got
I had a PC with a 170 MB HDD the year the PS4 came out.
And Tomb Raider with 99 save slots later.

>the year the PS4 came out.
do you live in the vatican?

>all these poorfags

Memory cards weren't THAT expensive Jesus Christ

not a young fag but this shit still rings true for ps4

>they thought 500gb was enough

i dont want to open it up so i'm looking forward to the update that allows external hard drive support this year (even though the ps3 had it off the bat ffs)

>tfw switch users are getting LESS than 40gb internal storage

the humanity, my fucking phone came with more

*PSX

>youngfags will never know the pain of asking their parents for a PS2 Memory Card 8MB only to get some wacky card with an installation disc that did nothing in the end because your family is fucking stupid and you were too young to know what the fuck needed to be done to make it work and so you were left with no memory card for your brand new PS2 for 2 years until you happened to get a memory card that was placed inside an EverQuest 2 PS2 game case that you got from a pawn shop and never got to play the game anyway because it was a fucking MMO and you didn't know better because you were a youngfag with "What is technology?" Parents/family.

look guys we have a richie rich kid here whoopie fucking doo

When you don't have any income yourself besides birthday, christmas, and sometimes valentine's and Easter money is really tight.

There is also the struggle of "mom take me to gamestop" and "stop spending your money on these damn videogames".

The struggle is real.

usual response would be didnt i buy you that game already or didnt you have one? why would you need another one?

>The struggle is real.
you dont know struggle till your mom takes your birthday/christmas money to pay the bills and constantly has to get a pawn loan on your console to pay the rent

>When you don't have any income yourself besides birthday, christmas, and sometimes valentine's and Easter money is really tight.
Then make some money, you lazy fuck.
Also
>has enough money for so many games that his Memory Card gets full
>not enough money for another card
Kys

>Parents bought me Lineage II
>Never got to play it because it required a monthly subscription

if you grew up with a ps2 you are a youngfag

>Then make some money
you worked when you were 8?

>constantly has to get a pawn loan on your console to pay the rent

;_;

yeah i was a paperboy

>has enough money for so many games that his Memory Card gets full

what are multiple save files for 1 game?

>Then make some money, you lazy fuck.

a fucking 10 y.o. cant get a job you tool

how about buying multiple memory cards?
Pls don't tell me you're still poor

you wanna know what i fucking grew up with you little bitch?

NES
SNES
Sega
N64
PS1
PS2
Gamecube
Xbox original
Xbox 360
PS3
Wii
PC

in that fucking order.

prove it.

Good old times. In Europe console piracy was blooming in 1995-1999, for like 3$ you could get psx games, and memory cards felt awfully expensive with price equal to 15-20$
As 5-7 year old kid that had to decide if you want 5 new games or a memory card this was really hard choice.

lol they dont call them yuropoors for nothing.

>not having a high cap ps1 memory card

can't even find a pic online but the fucker was like 32 mb

That's still a a problem with the 500gb PS4 and the 32gb Wii U

/thread

>game cases actually had a slot for memory cards to go in to above the disc
>people actually expected players to have a memory card dedicated to each game

>Faxanadu NES
>32 Character password

"Is that an "I" a lower case "L"? The number "1"?

FFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUU

Are you living in fatmurristan or some shithole? When i needed more money as a child, i asked my neighbors to clean their garden or i was delivering brochures or some shit.
Nothing more easy than making some vidya money as a kid.

Getting games in Germany was nice, but you would have fun memories in Poland.

>Calls Sony Poland if they have catalog with games for PSX
>They don't even sell consoles, just TV's and video adapters.

Internet was still crawling and people had to drive to Germany to buy their pirates to pirate in Poland, because none would buy original game even in half price. 1997 was good year.

>>people actually expected players to have a memory card dedicated to each game
No, it was simply to store your memory card when you were taking your games and saves over to a friend. Are you literally autistic?
