Why aren't external GPU's more of a thing?

Why aren't external GPU's more of a thing?

Do companies hate money?

Nintendo has one planned for the Switch.

Screencap this post.

Because it's pointless. Better drain, mobility issues, etc.

If you're going to leave it plugged in, why not just get a desktop?

Who is going to lug around a laptop like that on the go in a car or something and have the battery die in 15 minutes?

That's IF they can even run on the laptop's battery power, which I don't think is likely.

>why not just get a desktop?

My case is not large enough for some GPU's while the CPU/PSU are strong enough.

So get a larger case.

What tiny case do you have that can't house a normal sized card like a 980?

I have one and it's comfy.

This.

Those things became obsolete when nvidia fit full sized GPU's inside laptops in 2016.

>So get a larger case.
But I want just to plug the damn device, not fiddle with whole PC.

It's possible, I remember watching a linus video about it.

>take out components

>move to other case

>plug in

>done

It's not rocket surgery

>Screen cap the fucking obvious
(You)

>he doesn't have an external GPU for his laptop as a college student

>he doesn't have a nice light laptop to take notes with during class

>and when he wants to game he heads home and plugs in his external gpu to play all the highest demanding games

>not to mention it's upgradable unlike most gaming laptops

Literally the future, even razer noticed there is a market for this.

Because GPUs transmit A LOT of data. Having it external would just bottleneck at the USB port

In the case of desktops, can't they make some sort of connector that goes into the PCI port, then connect the GPU box to that?

More like
>get a high end desktop
>buy a shitty 200$ laptop

This is the true patrician tier.

Because the ports needed (USB 3.1 w/ Thunderbolt 3) are just now becoming commonplace in laptops and there's not a great generic external gpu enclosure on the market last I looked.

This is the shit I'm talking about, why aren't nvidia and AMD all over this?

Then you're buying two devices, not to mention you have to have all your settings and everything the same on both so they have to be set up . I like my solution better.

because it's hard to market, also you need specific ports for it to work wouth much bottleneck,

USBC thunderbolt 3 or expresscard 2 or 3

Which adapter is that? My W520's internal card is really holding it back.
