Is metroidvania the worst genre?

Is metroidvania the worst genre?

It's not really a genre when you think about it. Every game has some form of exploration and item gating.

not even close

Except that's so blatantly untrue when you think about it.

no, the 'mons RPG is. your choices are the completely stale and mediocre pokemon or absolute garbage.

there's no game called Metroidvania, you dumb nerd

No but it has the worst fanbase

t. eternally butthurt classicvaniafag making a baseless claim on the fact that most people like the superior metroidvanias instead of dumb old classicvanias

ARPGs

God no. That'd be walking simulators.

Action RPGs that are cuh-ray-zee hack and slash games in denial to which have cancerous fanbases.

>worse than Sonic or Kingdom Hearts fanbases

metroidvania is not a genre, it is a method of pacing

a way how game doles out game's challenges to the player

moment to moment gameplay itself can by anything

No but its up there. Most games in the genre dont even handle exploration well and thats the one thing thats supposed to seperate them from regular action platformers.

Genre? are there other games that have this method of travel besides metroid and castlevania?

???

No it very much means 2D action adventure platformers. Just because retards apply it to other genres doesnt mean its applicable.

Okay, which are the BEST metroidvania?

Super Metroid and La Mulana, everything else is a waste of time

Mirror of Fate.

Not while these exist
>Pokemon
>Sonic
>Undertale

I kinda like it, I even had some fun with some of the porn games. most porn games I just hold ctr and fap and shut it down.

It's not a bad genre but traditional action platformers are 100x better

Metroid trilogy (the remakes)
Castlevania Sotn, AoS, OoE haven't played the rest.
Shantae 3 it's not that good but fun.good waifus

its the stupidest fucking name ever made, right next to mobas

Shantae and the pirate's curse and some other games I don't remember their names.
Your travel through areas shown as blocks in the map, while advancing you will find dead ends which can be advanced after you find the item, powerup, etc. fighting bosses and it gives a big sense of exploration.

>OoE
Not a metroidvania.

Nice meme

Nah it's pretty great. Platformers and collectathons get my vote for worst genre.

Yeah, like just about any fanbase. The Souls fanbase is just as bad.

Speak for yourself.

>Metroidvanias great
>platformers worst

Metroidvanias are part-platformers.

Yep. So that makes platformers just half a game in my eyes.

No it's one of the best.

Shantae is an awful example.
>Go through area to get item/transformation if you want to talk HGH as well
>Do chores with new item for people to open up next area
>Rinse
>Repeat

It is a metroidvania, you got the map with sections even if there are different areas, just like shantae.

Platformers excell at level design, mechanics, pacing, etc. though unlike metroidvania games which mix a bunch of shit together and can't pull off any of it off well. You'd really have to prefer quantity over quality to dislike platformers while liking metroidvania shit

Platformers generally lack any interesting mechanics. Most of them are just about running and jumping. 3d collectathons are generally about running and jumping until you touch a doodad.

Metroidvanias combine that with combat and exploration. But they're not the only genre that's just a better version of platformers. Megaman is another great one.

So for example. Megaman is a good game and mario is not. Mario is just megaman but less interesting and with less going on.

That's nonsense though, Mario 64 for example is far, far more deep mechanically than any Megaman game could ever hope to be. Same deal with the early Sonic games. Same deal with a shit ton of other great platformers that have come out over the years. You have an incredibly shallow view of these games if you actually believe that. Also metroidvania games may combine platforming with other elements except the platforming is always pretty awful compared to any actual dedicated platformer because of shit level design and the likes

I think mario64 is the exception rather than the rule. And I've never played a sonic I considered anything but mediocre.

You could have cited dustforce or something and had a point.

Sonic games have pretty complex physics for platformers. Also Dustforce is an example, Umihara Kawase series is an example, Gimmick is an example even garbage like Super Meat Boy is far better than the best metroidvania in terms of platforming

So where does "character action" rank?

Either a Game where you have to collect items as a means of progressing further into the game both in terms of difficulty and story, or a Game where you have to sit through hours of obvious padding in the form of over-the-shoulder gratuitous combat which is as simple as it is uninspired.

If you're going to lie to me at least do it to my face.

Playstation games are dumb and old.

it's actually one of my favorites

Hey! That's not roguelike

"character action" actively makes me want to rant at whoever uses it about how shitty of a genre title it is, considering that the nature of almost all games (especially action games) puts you in control of a character, thus making the term as vague as fucking possible when the proponents of the term are referring to a specific niche of the action game genre. I prefer "stylish action" because it actually describes something about what kind of action game it is.

No thats monhun and clones

2016 GOTY as well.

No, that'd be fps.
