Is the whole DnD style class based adventuring-with-a-party game genre dead? Dragon Age is the only one I know of still thriving, but it's lost it's way after the first game.

Why aren't there more?

Dragon Age is not DnD style. Baldur's Gate, Neverwinter Nights and so on are.

Everything has to be multiplayer now

There are.

Pillars of Eternity
Torment: ToN

Not claiming DA is DnD-like, more along the lines of 'class based party adventuring'.

And Deadfire is on the way

I would hesitate to call the first Neverwinter Nights D&D style, except for the system it uses.

What are you talking about? There's plenty of good singeplayer games coming out.

How is it? Reviews are fantastic, but I assume i's pretty niche? How does Paladin play? I'm a sucker for some crusading.

>why
Because those games were based on technological limitations.

SoU and HotU manage it fine, it's the OC that had issues with that. The multiplayer servers dedicated to realizing those aspects certainly had no issue. Arguably NWN2 did it better, and better still in MotB and SoZ.

But they're so fun.

I don't care about tech limitations, I enjoy the format of 'you come across X encounter, here's a list of 3-8 choices you can do, and if you do J choice, you can do P choice later'. It's fucking amazing, regardless of tech, it's just fun.

Good, and the expansion is excellent. As far as I can tell the main complaints seem to be from people who find the story in the early going too tedious, but that was never an issue for me, particularly compared to something like BG1. Paladins have a number of effective builds.

>Dragon Age is the only one I know of still thriving
Dragon age is the opposite of thriving, and arguably not even a "DnD style class based adventuring-with-a-party game".

PoE is very subdued. It's not an action packed romp. It's very slow, takes its time, and it's absolutely only for the people that asked exactly what it is. To say it's niche is almost an understatement. However, for those within that, it's decent. Not great. Just decent. It has its moments, and it has its flaws, and the expectations going in should be based on exactly what it was asked to be, and the promises it made to those people.

I'm still not sure how this game happened or how it succeeded. I will say this, the two White March DLC pieces feel very required, and the combat sections in the two DLCs are better than what you'll experience in the based game - though I beg you take note that combat is not the game's strong point, so that's a low bar. It's concentration on other [non-combat] aspects was obviously given more time.

>but I assume i's pretty niche?
It's sold around a million copies I think. So it's not that niche.

*anymore, with 2 and Inquisition.

dragon age origins is the closest thing you can think of? well youre blind

also da2 is basically a visual novel with combat mechanics slapped onto repeated environments

dai is some kind of action game embarrassed to be an rpg that cut out core features like companion ai tactics and then spent its entire run time fucking its own asshole while the main villain did everything he could to not be present for the majority of the game and to phone it in when he did show up. also the game's ending is stuffed off in a dlc somewhere. and its not even a good action game.

compared to most other games about talked about THIS much, that is extremely niche.
But then again, most of the talking about it happens in the repost threads by that one fucking retard with his hateboner for obsidian and weirdly josh sawyer specifically.

Dragon age isn't thriving. It flopped after 2, and despite payed reviews for the third one, never quite recovered, because as you said
>it's lost it's way after the first game.

Pic related will always be the best d20 based game ever made, from back when games were good.

Seems all the modern ones are just painful-to-look-at gets-boring-after-char-creation junk, though I'd love to be proven wrong.

If it flopped EA would cancel DAI

Because the only reason anyone ever bothered with those games was the writing, and the only company that specialized in making them lost the ability to write anything worth reading.

Also, RPGs are not that niche anymore, so it's better investment return to develop your own game rather than pay for the D&D brand and hope enough desperate neckbeards will pay for it.

That's not KotOR II.

>KOTOR1
I've heard of bad taste, but I've never encountered someone who actually lacks it in entirety.

With the restoration mod, yeah the second one is a blast
But the unfinished vanilla state of it means that kotor1 wins.

Don't be sad, your game is good as well!

wrong it is impossible to find a decent multiplayer anywhere close to this genre

>Pic related will always be the best d20 based game ever made,
I don't consider that a compliment because the d20 system, itself, is literal garbage.
