What are some other good Undervanias that are available on PC?
What are some other good Undervanias that are available on PC?
Wouldn't "Mothertale" be a better subgenre name.
wot is this game
big joke very funny
It should be underlikes IMHO
end you'reself
Honest question
What do Undertale, Lisa, Mother and the other "Motherlikes" have in common other than the art style to call this a sub genre?
shitty fanbases
"Mother rip-off" is what I go with
post-modernism, jrpg-like structure
Hiveswap is coming soon
>Undervania
Sup Forums is literally the only place where I see this term.
i literally haven't seen that term before i saw this thread
>Lisa
>postmodern
It's just bad
Everyone in this thread should die a horrible death.
Myself included.
thanks for taking the bullet for the good of Sup Forums
What the fuck is an "Undervania?"
The genre you're looking for is "Tumblrcore".
what you said doesn't seem to have much to do with what you quoted. don't really sound like you know what those things mean desu
good response, i almost bothered to comprehend it
It's bait.
>calling this mother 4
the balls of this guy.
what's it even got to do with the series? everyone died at the end of 3.
...
I know this is a bait thread but you should try Contact
Maybe you should use a good shmup for your example
They have an emphasis on a simplistic artstyle and casual dialogue, with a strong narrative focus that imparts a message more mature than its artstyle would imply. It attempts to be funny and heartfelt at the same time at varying points, and uses its childish look as a contrast to what its saying.
Like a halfway mark between Dragon Quest, Peanuts and South Park. I think that's the best description of how to describe "Motherlikes"
Needs a better name.
>Underbound
>Mothertale
>Undermother
>Earthtale
child-like, because the target audience for these games is manchildren like us
Speaking of, South Park Stick of Truth has a very Earthbound feeling towards it.
>Abstract construction paper artstyle
>Kids as the main focus
>Bizzare Stuff happening Left and Right
>Pokes fun at the mechanics and themes of RPGs
>mgq
lmao what
ur mom
That's exactly what i mean!
Now that I think about it, Samurai Jack also gave me a similar feeling
Actually, MGQ's the game that's closest to Undertale in that picture.
Super Lesbian Animal RPG looks promising
I'm serious
The fact that it has colorful animal characters next to the word "lesbian" probably qualifies it for being Progresso-like
>I'm serious
No you're not
I am. It's combat and dialogue very heavily mimic the Mother series, complete with a bright and cheery artstyle with a plot that looks like it might have something a bit more serious underneath. A plot involving characters making an effort to join a guild and become adventurers implies that there will be some sort of conflict.
>>Undermother
Sounds like a Toriel simulator
So why is it that Earthbound/Mother have had such a big impact on the indie development world but basically none when it comes to larger scale projects?
>pacifist mc who wants monster coexistence
>monster porn
>le sparing alice
The original Mother trilogy and Yume Nikki are the only two "Mothercore" games with actual artistic merit to them imo. Undertale has an interesting combat system but that's about it, the narrative is a fucking joke.
Mother itself is a niche that lends itself well to top down RPGs, which is something big development studios probably can't do anymore without looking cheap.
fucking lol
Can we not start incorporating Undertale in the name? You can just ask for Mother clones and we know what you're talking about.
The reason we refer to series like Metroid, Mother, Rogue, Castlevania etc. is because they were genre-defining and revolutionary. Things Undertale isn't.
A. Earthbound is the du jure example of a cult classic, a story more well known for being talked about than being played
B. Earthbound's art was deliberately poor and copying it can be used to mask your own lack of budget/equipment/talent
C. The contrast between the childish and the mature appeals to the kind of adult that still has the same hobbies and interests they had when they were a kid
The bottom right is Ni no Kuni, though.
>earthbound's art
>poor
fucking what
the perspective was a little fucked in the overworld but the battle backgrounds and general design are gorgeous
>call the type of game after a game that came out in 2015
>Show games of this type that have been out for years
Fuck why?
>classifying Mother as an "Undervania"
Why do I come here.
Like others said, Mother is a niche, quasi art house little thing that most large studios aren't particularly interested in. Not that there wouldn't be the potential for an AAA game with a narrative inspired by Mother but it would just be too much of a risk when Generic FPS #89314 is a far safer bet.
In a time when every game was pushing pixels to created detailed sprite art, and some games were even graduating beyond that to simple 3d, Earthbound stood out in its simple sprite work, to create its childish feel
I think the warped perspective was also intentional, to make it look like a child drew it
Given that Mother 3's art uses the same general style but is actually really nice looking, you might be on to something.
Yes. Perhaps "poor" was the wrong choice of words.
You like the dialogue?
Not him, but its probably less what the dialogue is about but the way its being said.
>tfw no game has ever actually succeeded in emulating Mother's tone
What the other user said. I think the dialogue has a cute, almost childlike humor to it. Its not serious, but its creates a welcoming non-threatening atmosphere, which is something a lot of these games do really.
The kind of person who could capture the spirit of Mother is not the same kind of person who would try to emulate Mother.
You're thinking more of trash like Life is Strange and Night in the Woods.
That's a shitty adventure game.
These threads pop every semi-frequently. It's just a meme.
Pretty much this, it's actually sort of impressive because you have to accept a certain "historical mindset" to appreciate the visuals of most SNES games (as in, you can enjoy them for being early 90s digital art while recognizing they were made under certain limitations) but Mother 2 seems to to be completely immune to that. The fact that Shigesato intentionally went for a simplistic look is a genius choice, in the end it stands the test of time better than any other retro videogame I haver ever played simply because it's deliberately trying to look simple and stylized. Something about it just feels timeless.
It's also one of the reasons as to why I'm glad pic related was never released, the 3D graphics looked terrible.
What's this, a good post? What timeline is this?
I think Nintendo was doing a huge experimental thing with its 2D games while 3D was starting to helm itself. Remember that Yoshi's Island and Kirby's Dream Land 3 were also ridiculed for its artstyle at first, but its now regarded as one of the best looking games of the era, while Donkey Kong Country and Star Fox 1 really hasn't aged well
I loved Earthbound's art style, but Mother 3's art felt uninspiring and disappointing. I would have liked the N64 version a lot more.
Its not. Yume Nikki is the worst "Mother-like" game you could play. Its dull and aimless.
But then you wouldn't feel as surprised when the old sprites suddenly return
>mother 3's art
>dissappointing
what
I don't think you could really call Yume Nikki a mother like. At no point does the game act childish or make you feel at home.
>shitty
True. But the name follows the Earth+Bound pattern so it's gotta count
The first thing I noticed on the pic was Nocturne and I couldn't contain my laughter
Thanks user, I needed to laugh
It's a good exploration game. And it's free. It's not everyone's cup of tea but it's definitely not bad.
>john beating the shit out of that fucking gender-debating sprite
Holy shit, this comic is like condensed therapy.
Please post the rest.
I can't believe how much agreeing is happening in this thread. This is an actual conversation
this is the last part
What the fuck do any of these have to do with Castlevania?
Remember in the early 80's when gaming magazines called platformers "jump-em-ups" and things like Dr. mario "puzzle-em-ups?"
>Super Mario Adventure
So is nobody going to talk about this or am I missing something here?
I haven't seen it either, but its clearly meant to piss people off.
Yeah, I'm down for this. Them being trans only makes my boner harder.
>Baphomet in the screenshot
>jump'n'run games
Kek! I only see trolling like this on Sup Forums.
Since when did Lisa have a shitty fanbase? Near as I can tell, discussion about it that happens on Sup Forums seems to veer towards it being an emotional game but that's about it
>review of trauma center 1
>surgery-em-up
QuirkyXDrpg is better.
Gets fanboy panties in a twist.
Do the Paper Mario Games count?
I think it's in the same vein as calling open world RPGs "skrims" in an attempt to rattle the hive, so to speak.
>mgq
>the narrative is a fucking joke.
t. psychopath
>Mario rpgs are considered separate from this genre merely because their visual art and gameplay is significantly more fleshed despite being similar in most other aspects.
this is a pretty good meme
>Mario RPGs
If you mean Mario and Luigi, not really, because you control your character during the enemy's turn and there are button prompts during attacks (granted mother 3 has this, but that's only mother 3)
So I'm not really sure how those are similar other than they're both rpgs.
