Yes because the world's situation will make much more sense, since in the game it's just "lol kill the ayys," but there is a whole fuck ton of story related to why the world is the way it is. And there are little nods to past games that you will appreciate.

But ultimately no. You can play the game with no previous knowledge of the older games and enjoy Mr. Taro's Wild Ride 2017.

Supposedly killing the shadworld would make all the other Gestalts relapse and doom all Replicants in return, but there's this short story in Grimoire Nier were Nier gets replicated using the data of the original replicant stored in a machine, what's up with that? Wouldn't that be impossible with a relapsed Gestalt?

What the forest built couldn't be a replicant because as you say - its not possible without a gestalt, so it was probably an android if anything.

And yeah that leads the way open for him to even be alive during Automata in some form, but ofcourse Taro will never be that direct.

Plot twist: It isn't him going there but someone else wearing his mask. During SE panel, most likely he'll appear on screen calling out the impostor sitting in front.

Well, you'll find similarities between characters and you'll find several weapons that have been in use since the first PS2 game, but that's about it. You need to play DOD1 and Nier in order to get most of the picture, since Nier is based on a "joke" ending meant to rip-off Evangelion that DOD has.

You can emulate it if you really, really want to play it, but it hasn't aged very well. Nier is more crucial if you really want to be in the know.

Drakengard is a very bad musou/Panzer Dragoon mix. The music is composed to make you want to kill yourself, same goes for the characters. It's a wild ride, and definitely entertaining. But not "fun".
Nier Gestalt/Replicant is a lot more bearable but still not that good to play.
There are a bunch of videos explaining the lore and LPs if that's your thing. If you're going to watch someone at least watch Clemps. He hated DoD3 which surprisingly is the one I liked the most.
All 3 are awful, at least by deleting his memories you get a shop. He's selling parts of his friends but hey a sale is a sale.

You seem to have it right, the Forest of Myth Nier was just an anomaly. We killed the shadowlord which killed all of humanity in a generation or two.

So if I had to pick one to play to get as much of the core lore as I could, which would it be? I don't really care too much about bad gameplay or anything like that, recently all I have really played are nostalgia rpgs.

It took like 1000 years for the last Gestalt yo die after the defeat of the shadowlord or something, hardly a generation or two.

Talking about Replicants, Taro said that even though they could have sex the Replicants couldn't create offspring, so Devola and Popola or any other managers would put them to sleep then create a Replicant using test tubes and shit, so I assume this proccess not work anymore without Gestalts?

Not sure how long Gestalts can survive, but once cut off from the Shadowlord they'll very soon relapse completely, so "humanity" is dead even if the deranged shades themselves are still around.

Replicants are created, as you say by Devola/Popolas, but they use information directly from their gestalts during the process, once a gestalt is relapsed - the corresponding replicant will get the black scrawl and die. Once theres no gestalt, theres no way to create a replicant.
As you can see this is why shadow Nier was screwed over, Yonah relapsed immediately upon gestaltization, so her replicants always got the black scrawl and died.

Those two and 9S are the most interesting characters in the game.

How is the dub? The demo only gave me a small sample of their acting so I'm not sure. I originally planned to play with nip voices because muh seiyufu, but if the eng dub is decent then I might reconsider.

The way the system works is that they split off the soul into Gestalts and put them in "stasis", while the Replicants system (the forest and devola/popola pairs) starts creating clone bodies from the gestalts, these are the replicants, initially only given a simple AI to function as intended - fight off the legion, send away the queen's Maso, get rid of WCS, and keep "the world" in habitable shape for when humans get back.

But as replicants are not born, it is always the same people who get recycled, and for 1400 years or what, Devola/Popola kept cycling the humans, there was many many cycles of Nier and Yonah, which is where the bro/papa split gets canonized, as in some cycles Nier ends as father or brother, but Yonah always dies.

And then a few hundred years before Nier these simplistic automaton-replicants gained self awareness despite how they are being recycled, and we arrive to the game itself like that, in one of these cycles, the one where shadowNier decided he had enough.

Taro being Taro is only possible because someone is there for him. That someone is Saito. You can say that Saito is the first and foremost reason Taro doesn't go off the rails in his interviews.

I'm just somewhat a little worried now because Nier A is kinda in the frontpage right now. You know journos, being "somewhat different" is cool when you're niche. But when you become somehow mainstream? They hound you.

In the end Taro doesn't like attention.

That's another thing I don't get, the Shade form was some sort of stasis, right? Why are they gestalts running amok then?

He's done solo presentations before, it'll be fine.

OG nier was the first shade that didn't went bananas in the gelstalt project, those he fights in the prologue are the ones that wen't wrong.

After that, using his gene data, they managed to fix the project.

The gestalts were released from stasis I think due to the demonic elements/WCS being confirmed as gone automatically - alas the replicants were self-aware by this time so instead of knowing their jobs and whats happening they just took them for monsters.

Nier wasn't the first, but he was the first who could stay stable after gestaltization, he did not relapse at all while others did, this is why he was used in the project, as from then on he provided the maso for the rest of the gestalts to stop relapsing.

Another thing is whats up with the Grimoires? I know they were handed to humans so they'd be transformed into gestalts, just like it did to human Yonah, but how come human Nier can use magic and shit with it? Just what is the purpouse of these books? I know they are made with the souls of child soldiers.

Well we were kept pretty tightly in the dark about them, as apparently there was 13, but 11 of these don't do shit. (not counting the Noire copies which were made to gestaltize people)

As to why Nier can use Weiss is basically just Weiss' willingness (and Noire's in the prologue) , while they themselves seemed to just pull power straight from the system/gestalts themselves.
The purpose is clear, they are the merging books that can force the merger.
As to what the sealed verses are, why Weiss did not have them, why there weren't more book like them, or how Weiss turned into a sophisticated old man from a child soldiers, these are all up in the air.

I don't mean Route B/C/D, I meant the "new game" you get if you select Start Game after ending E (and I assume C and D).

It starts the game again from the very beginning with your level intact and the enemies being around LV60+ but I want to know if there's more to it than that.
