>get tricked into studying video game dev at college
>almost every single lesson is just pic related or worse, with minimal coding, writing or artwork dev sessions
who else fell for this? I dropped out after 6 months, flipping burgers now.
>get tricked into studying video game dev at college
>almost every single lesson is just pic related or worse, with minimal coding, writing or artwork dev sessions
who else fell for this? I dropped out after 6 months, flipping burgers now.
>actually going to college to study game design
the fuck is wrong with you people. you don't need a degree for that shit.
>implying you just didn't want to start another SJw shitpost thread
In that's true then tell us the college OP
We all know only Japan is capable of making good games anyway
it's true
>what actually happened
I SAW THIS PICTURE ON ANOTHER THREAD AND DECIDED TO REPOST BECAUSE I LOVE SHITTING UP THE BOARD
suh gay
Game design has turned into an ethics study. Focus on something like 3D modeling, learn Zbrush or something so you can join an existing game studio as background/world developer or character modeling.
stop trying to shit up my thread idiot
hide it instead of giving it a free bump
Same with art, all cis gender study politics bullshit
stem is the only way
>nooo don't shit up my shitpost thread
Reminder to sage if you have to reply guys
>game dev at college
Why do you even need this bullshit? Just learn coding like everyone else. What the fuck is so special about game development that you need a specialized college for it?
Don't worry I'm saging newfriend
?studying video game dev?
Study Computer Engineering and work on games out of class. The younger you start the better.
>vidya degree
sorry but even the most hardcore of SJWs have a leg up on you OP
Nice to see people still know how to pronounce it
>tfw can't decide if I want to into games or into programming
>tfw into programming, but sometimes question the choice
>tfw start seeing shit like op's image crop up
>tfw nobody gives a fuck as long as I close out bugs in time
Get into IT, is fun. You spend half your day in meetings and the other half trying to understand what the fuck the outsourced Indian help is trying to say over the phone.
>tfw finished my accounting degree and went straight in during tax season
>just want to play Zelda
Guys, I'm tired
I know you're just memeing but graduates from Digipen 1) actually make a functioning game 2) get actual experience working with a team to literally sell a game 3) have tremendous contacts in the industry
But if you aren't going to Digipen, you're being scammed
What's the problem with those fucking indians, why do people keep hiring them if you have to lose a fucking day troubleshooting their requests?
Every other nationality I have worked with is fine, Indians somehow have the gift of delaying projects because they require clarification for the most simple things or they straight up fuck up and you won't know about it until the worst time.
I truly sympathize for IT people. They always seem like good people subjected to the worst, most retarded shit possible.
I also can't stand meetings, for better or worse I hate sitting on my ass while I could be actually working.
Many feel like they need a degree so they have to study something even if they want to do shit like game dev, so because they wouldn't have the energy to study stem and game dev at the same time, they choose some bullshit vidya degree just to get a degree and having the energy to focus on studying what you need
This.
What kind of university even fucking offers "game development" as a line? It's all computer science, information systems, and the like. Sure you can take some courses specializing in game development there, but if you're actually studying computer science you're going to be coding.
Unless America is once again something else.
>he's still trying
Depending on where you work, software developers also fall to the endless meetings.
Trying what?
I have a M. Ec. from information systems but I'm not American so I wouldn't know what the fuck you burgerclappers do all day in your universities.
I was choosing college a few months ago and i was on the fence between studying game dev and Comp Science
i ended up picking CompSci
even though i've only had a really minor coding experience
how fucked am i
My 30yo step brother did video game design at uni.
The closest he's got to working in the game industry is working in a shop that sells them. He works in a call centre now.
In Comp sci we learned to code games to understand coding better. Should have went with Comp sci op.
Yeah, I agree. We should have more disabled female nigger enemies in video games.
That's what they are talking about, right?
With secured loans and little active oversight, U.S. school quality varies, and many offer very low value programs to add bodies.
If you look at any sector of the U.S. economy with enormous cost growth you can expect there are scams going on there. So financial engineering, higher education, and healthcare.
I've heard, and I do feel blessed that I manage to avoid more than the weekly scrum. I can get behind infrequent short meetings, just to make sure people know what's going on, but otherwise it feels like such a waste of man hours to have grunt programmers attend.
Buy/Download the books you need and read the fuck outta them (don't be afraid of reading ahead), you won't understand everything and if you have to opportunity to ask questions you will have plenty.
Always keep practising so your skills are sharp.
GDC has been infested with people who don't actually make games.
They still have some good technical talks but I'm done going to this shit.
Better yet, get into IT management where you have to setup a half day of meetings because your directs don't feel like they have to spend 15 minutes a week to update a project tracker.
>be HR for game development recruiter
>look at resume
>"Bachelor's degree in Game Design"
>not the Computer Science degree we specified in the job description
CS3 > any vidya related degree
I don't like meetings either but there are a few that every IT person should attend and participate in: that's the CAB and the project review meeting. Having grunt IT folks in CAB is important because it's mostly PMs and there's no one there to call them out on their shit.
Comp. Sci > game dev
Hands down. Comp Sci. Will teach you the skills you need to have to get intuition about not only coding but also algorithm flow and optimization.
The rest is just creativity, which you have to teach yourself anyway, or soft skills like team work and shit.
why do Americans say "coders" and "coding" instead of "programmers" and "programming"
lack of education?
