One of the game's biggest issues gameplay-wise is the difficulty balance. Normal is way too easy and hard is way too hard. Play the intro section (the part that was in the demo) on normal and then once you get to the first save point switch it to hard and see if you have fun getting 1-2 shot be almost everything. You'll get upgrade chips later on that will help with that though.

Nier isn't MGR.

Don't set yourself up for disappointment.

It's Nier 1 with more polish

If you want to force a comparison, it's a foil to MGR.

The game is absolutely not combat-oriented. Its a jrpg with action elements. It expands upon the mechanics of the first Nier more than anything else.

This is the first time I have ever really really wanted to keep playing a game but could not because I couldn't handle the amount of shit being thrown at my mind.

It's a slow burn, you start thinking about things and start realizing what the game is going to be and what is going to happen down the line, and it fucks with you in the best way possible.

The best part is is that they were able to do this and appease fans of the first game, but also make it completely okay to go in with no knowledge of the series. That's fucking impressive.

You could replace every instance of denuvo with steam and it would be the same thing. I once bought a steamworks game during a 1 year period of no internet and I couldn't play the single player game till I got the internet.

Significantly worse in my opinion. Pretty much everything in Automata is either extremely easily found or can be purchased, and the drop rate chips go way further than the drop rate words in Nier, which, IIRC, max out at +30%.

Getting the DLC is practically essential if you wanna get 100%, but even then shit like machine oil, titanium alloy, forsaken bracelets, and black pearls will have you wishing for death.

What does grinding for 100% completion have to do with the core gameplay? You can see almost all of the game's content without subjecting yourself to that, especially since upgrades aren't required for any of the endings and weapon stories are only in Grimoire Nier.

The game isnt too bad and hard. The intro is a PTA because being 1 shot in bullethell boss segments. Route C has a bit of a difficulty spike and made me want to cry in some parts though.
