Gothic Thread

Just bought the Gothic series.

Which one should I play first? Which one is the best? Easiest to learn?

Just play them in order. First Gothic, then Gothic 2, preferably NOTR

It's the best RPG ever made btw.

Honestly, you'll find a much more coherent and engaging experience just reading about it -- walk-thoughs and post-mortems.

The mechanics of the thing are just atrocious, I have a hard time believing these games were ever considered "playable"

It's always a surprise to see that people can be this incompetent

>Easiest to learn
It's an extremely streamlined series, you can't really fuck up learning it.

The first one has a great setting but there's a lot of things to annoying you about it. No real mouselook sorta deal.

The second has mildly better controls but the setting is fucking BORING and concentrates on the same orc war bullshit you've seen a billion times before.

>But the orcs are
Don't care.

From there, Risen is worth playing, but ignore the rest.

Gothic 1 and 2 were ahead of its time, especially Gothic 2, when it came out it was so much ahead of other games in terms of technology and world crafting.
They're not atrocious at all, they're just different from the mainstream controls.

Play them in order. 2 NoTR is better than 1, much bigger world, has more content, more polish, but 1 is a great introduction and a great game too. 1 is also much easier than 2 so it's better for beginners, 2 NoTR is ridiculously hard

Make sure to get systempack and DX11 mod when playing Gothic 2

>It's an extremely streamlined series, you can't really fuck up learning it.

Retarded, Gothic is one of the hardest games to learn. Dark Souls is a piss easy shit compared to Gothic .

>same orc war bullshit you've seen a billion times before.

It's not about fighting the orcs, it's about literally everything else that goes on. Fighting orcs is just a story in the background and you never even fight orcs until the end of the game.

>combat system
>doesn't rely on you rolling around
>side and backsteps actually matter
>you can also parry and decide how you swing your sword
>animations change and you get more options once you get better by investing LP into it

Gothic 1+2 probably have the best nelee combat of all RPGs.
It's deep yet functioning. Too bad so many people think its shit because its anything but standard.

Besides that i wish that magic in Gothic would be as good as melee is.

Risen is a casual dumbed down version of Gothic with all the depth and world crafting removed. No wonder you recommend it

Play it and wonder why character-based RPG's are so rare and everyone went on to make vast empty worlds

now try to shoot someone with bow or crossbow without having 10 arrows in row bug on some terrain instead of hitting enemy

Just remember that you don't spam the attack buttons, wait a little before one swing is completed then press a button to do another. Many people are too dumb to realize that and quit thinking the combat is shit because you can only swing once

I finished playing as Archer recently, had no problems because I wasn't trying to hit enemies that were behind a wall or a tree

Bows are just as bland as magic.

If the Gothic have a weakness its clearly the ranged combat.

The funny thing is that playing Gothic 3 as an archer is pretty much the only way to enjoy it.

Alright, I'm going to start with Gothic 1. Any essential fixes / mods required?

But I recently played as Archer and it was fun as fuck, I likes it better than melee because you really see the progression of not being able to hit shit to going around the island and sniping enemies from a long distance with 1 or 2 hit

No, If it's a steam version you might need a systempack tho

For 2 get that and also DX11

Nothing besides the 60 FPS launcher if you ask me.

For me its a lackluster simply because its not very deep in any way.
You simply get better with the bow. It's not like more options open up to you once you level it.

Just remember that everything in this game will destroy you at the beginning. Make sure to get to a new rank in 1h/2h swords asap

>sidestep
What? I used backstep a lot since it has invincibility frames i'm sure. What's so good about side stepping?

Many animals for example have attacks which consist of them running straight at you.

A simply sidestep is enough to evade it and it also gives you the opportunity to hit back.

Scavengers for example are easy to kill that way. And backstep is useless there.

Strength gives you more damage with melee weapons(even if it requires dexterity, those are more of sidearms to archers or min maxing mages). Weapon Skill enhances your move set and the percentage of said skill is your critical chance. Critical multiplier, at least in 2, is something around 5-11x so crits are well worth it especially considering how you can get a skill up to a 100.

I don't know the finer workings of movement but i did kill all that wild shit by just backstepping. Not sure about the exact timing(right before it hits you enemy per enemy basis) but if you need something precise you can try it on lizards(island outside the port in 2 for instance) and press S as soon as you hear a sound and you should avoid any damage they could've caused. Now if you're talking about the first game then i am not sure if backstep does anything there(replayed it recently but i played a mage so not much melee there and holy fuck do spells suck in 1), been a long time but in 2 it's pretty godly.
