I tend to come up with one original character, give them a name, personality, detailed backstory, and then once I've settled on them I consider them to be effectively "canon" until proven otherwise.

I usually model them off of myself, make some tweaks for flavor, and then change the gender if I feel like it. I have 8/10 bone structure, so it usually works.
