Sup Forums Did you know about the Space Mecha Horror Survival Genre?
In the year 1995, two games were released in the same fucking genre. This genre? Dead on arrival. NO GAME HAS EVER REPLICATED THIS GENRE TO DATE. In this genre, there is ONLY -TWO- GAMES
Kileak: The DNA Imperative (1995) and Space Griffon (1995)
The later was an anime weeaboo version of the former
This genre is defined by a few aspects *Horror setting. You're in a secluded dungeon far removed from the rest of society *You have buddies who get killed off one by one just like a horror movie *You pilot a mecha and have to scavenge weapons as you go *You can game over two ways. You either run out of health, or you run out of battery. Either results in a game over *Open world Metroidvania with keycards and new weapons unlocking new passageways, but a linear story guides it along ALA MGS1
It's such a unique style of game you're doing a disgrace to yourself by not checking them out.
Like I said, space griffon is the anime weeaboo version, and kileak is the western version.
This genre has amazing potential, and should absolutely get another shot in 2017
I always see Kileak on iso lists but never tried it, I'm mildly curious now
Brody Rogers
Damn that is some really early 3D FPS games too, before Quake. I am really interested in all these early 3D and FPS games.
Looks kinda similar to Descent or maybe in idea similar to Space Hulk.
Landon Cooper
OP here, i'll answer questions about this genre and the games listed
Kileak for the atmosphere and gamelay, space griffon for the story. I mean it when I say it--space griffon's story still holds up in 2017. It follows the horror genre of storytelling to a T. It also has better enemy variety. But because of the strong focus on Storytelling, there is little room for replay value. There is gameplay mechanics though, and some of it is arguably stronger than kileak's.
but Kileak has far better mood and atmosphere. You will feel alone, and genuinely scared. at some points. It conveys a feeling and mood more than it does a story. This is a replayable game since it focuses on gameplay more than story.
the graphics don't hold up and the voice acting is meh, but the gameplay and fight mechanics are really good and hold a lot of promise
Robert Watson
Will actually check these out. Thanks OP!
Wyatt Evans
I always dreamt about a horror survival game where you're controlling a mech suit and have to traverse hostile areas with it, repair and maintain it, scavenge and upgrade it to keep on crossing the landscape, whether be a radiated desert, plagued caverns or toxic swamps with post apocalyptic/supernatural horrors around you.
Only your suit and the instruments you carry aboard divides you from certain death. Something like Mechwarrior meets STALKER. Also Kaiju stuff thrown in.
Isaac Hughes
Didn't From Software make games like this?
Tyler Reed
Gonna check them out. Hope it works via usb on the ps2
Sebastian Foster
Kileak has a few hidden CGI scenes depicting death by elevator, death by swarm of bees, death by falling into acidic lava
i can only guess these were removed by the ESRB to maintain a T rating but if you hack the game, the scenes are still on the disc.
Aiden Davis
nope.
From Software made a few non-mecha survival games (shadow tower comes to mind) but nothing quite like this.
Sebastian Flores
Kileak is the drizzling shits. The hallways are so small it's extremely difficult to dodge off screen enemy fire. It's weapons largely suck and the graphics are bad even for a ps1 game.
I beat the game a few years back and was never able to find one of the secret weapons as well.
Evan Price
it really hasn't aged well, as you've noted. i want to see a modern remake of this genre.
space griffon still holds up though
did you know kileak got a sequel game called Epidemic?
devil may is the drizzling shits. The hallways are so small it's extremely difficult to dodge off screen enemy fire. It's weapons largely suck and the graphics are bad even for a ps2 game.
I beat the game a few years back and was never able to find one of the secret weapons as well.
Nicholas Sullivan
Bump, for knowledge.
Eli Howard
what
Caleb Powell
Pretty neat idea, but it looks like it's just a doom clone. Why make a mecha game if you're not going to make use of the fact?
Jace Taylor
i'm confused
if there's a 3rd game, why are you saying there's only 2 games?
Liam Diaz
war hammer 40k is the drizzling shits. The hallways are so small it's extremely difficult to dodge off screen enemy fire. It's weapons largely suck and the graphics are bad even for a ps2 game.
I beat the game a few years back and was never able to find one of the secret weapons as well.
Ayden Sullivan
Well he did say "Did you know," which implied it was recently acquired knowledge.
Camden Johnson
Epidemic is not a Mecha Horror Survival game.
despite being a sequel to kileak, it drops most of the horror shit. you're alone for the entire game and don't really have buddies. it's a glorified adventure game and thus doesn't belong in this genre, despite being a sequel to a game in the genre.
Asher Hernandez
I didn't know about 6DoF until recently. It seems the genre is pretty dead, especially since the latest Descent sucked.
Angel Cook
kinda looks like japanese space hulk
Camden Davis
>Kileak Holy shit, I remember being like 3 years old and watching my friend's older brother play this game.
Eli Ramirez
>Epidemic
holy shit epidemic was the sequel?
i remember playing that as a kid.
there's also another game i played called brahma force. iirc it's about a mech strike force sent to investigate a space station and gets attacked by a rogue that uses the space station's defenses against the strike force. i thought it was the shit back in the day.
Owen Cruz
I played Space griffin. It was pretty okay.
Christopher Reyes
Descent underground was indeed shit, though Overload is the true successor and is actually good.
Isaiah Martinez
what
Connor Ward
>early access Well, waiting won't hurt
Wyatt Green
Bump
Leo Lee
My entire family played this game.
We all loved it. It's such a shame it's so rarely known, the you get people that flat out say "it sucks", not really appreciating the mechanics lying within.
Jeremiah Richardson
>Space Mecha Horror Survival Genre I mean i know where you are going with this but in all serious is there a specific genre we havent seen in games, Space Mecha Horror survival is all one in its own retrospect but i mean something new and never done before instead of mixture of genres
Thomas Mitchell
KILEAK looks really good.
Thanks, OP.
I'mma try to find a sealed copy.
Carson Garcia
Resident evil is the drizzling shits. The hallways are so small it's extremely difficult to dodge off screen enemy fire. It's weapons largely suck and the graphics are bad even for a ps2 game.
I beat the game a few years back and was never able to find one of the secret weapons as well.
Jace Ross
Onimusha: Warlords is the drizzling shits. The hallways are so small it's extremely difficult to dodge off screen enemy fire. It's weapons largely suck and the graphics are bad even for a ps2 game.
I beat the game a few years back and was never able to find one of the secret weapons as well.
Connor Cooper
Is there something specific you have in mind, user?
Isaiah Garcia
Don't you ever wiggle at me again, faggot.
This is a thread about video games.
Hunter Collins
Armored Core is the drizzling shits. The hallways are so small it's extremely difficult to dodge off screen enemy fire. It's weapons largely suck and the graphics are bad even for a ps2 game.
I beat the game a few years back and was never able to find one of the secret weapons as well.
Evan Phillips
Tell us, user. :^)
Dominic Thomas
Onimusha is pretty cool though
Juan Lewis
Whats the best Armored Core game?
Daniel Barnes
Last raven or for answer depending on if you want more tactical slow-paced or sonic fast.
Justin Cox
The 3 series.
Isaac Wright
dont make that user think you are me fucking asshole no i dont have any new genres to present im just curious because it feels like we have reached all forms of genres in movies and video games its not like something different is made other than the same genres under a different setting or idea
Jace Roberts
wow. thanks for making this board less shit, user.
Ian Bennett
Both, I have time to test them Thanks
Brandon Phillips
If you want to keep it that way, if only for a few hours, keep the thread bumped.
Noah Nelson
you guys should really play forsaken if you havent
Holy shit, I used to have Kileak when I was a kid. Been trying to remember the name of it for a while now. Thanks, OP!
Thomas Lee
I have actually played Kileak but ionly on an emulator
very cool game, very dark and foreboding and moody... i miss mid 90s games with that feel...like super metroid...bump..
Jordan Peterson
Armored Core is not survival horror.
Robert Ortiz
Wouldn't 1993's Space Hulk be the first example of this genre? They made a reboot of it which came out recently, but it wasn't particularly good.
Henry Nelson
>recommending Last Raven to a newcomer
god have mercy on his soul
Start with 3 if you dont wanna break your controller and/or TV
Ryan Lewis
This doesn't seem very horror-ish from the gameplay videos.
Bentley Myers
Bump. Not letting this thread go to waste. Since Armored Core has already been mentioned, post your mechs.
Robert Morgan
...
Nolan Bailey
I actually feel the same. That's why I asked. It would be cool though if we were wrong, at least in my opinion.
Brandon Ward
Sauce?
Ethan Jones
I can't believe there's only two mecha horror games. I really can't.
Grayson Wood
Do you guys think that Fromsoft would be able to make a game like this? Given mech experience with Armored Core and a slight experience with horror with Bloodborne.
Joseph Davis
They are not what you said they are. There's a lot of games that has the same gameplay as these two games. Just because it's the story said you are riding a mecha does not mean it's a mecha game when there's no perceive height/largeness to the gameplay especially when the doors/enemies/everything is scaled to your size.
Camden Ward
First I ever hear of this genre. Thanks for this OP. It is rare to ever see informative threads on Sup Forums.
Juan Phillips
Imagine a Demonbane videogame
Caleb Martin
Wow who is this?
Grayson Martinez
My dad and I used to play Kileak back in the day. They just don't make mech games like they used to.
Nolan Nguyen
whhaaatt
Matthew Myers
1995? Maybe they were just experimental launch games for the PS1 or even glorified tech demos.
Ian Young
>I can't believe there's only two mecha horror games. I really can't.
Face reality, user.
There's literally only two.
Owen Hill
Wrong thread. But have another bump anyway.
Alexander Ross
>Just because it's the story said you are riding a mecha does not mean it's a mecha game
