Yeah it's a conspiracy theory that writers for game magazines/websites get 'strongly encouraged' to give positive reviews for hyped up games. This is from No Man's Sky. I've written in the same scenarios, we were strongly encouraged not to tread below a 5 under any circumstance.

To be perfectly frank. None. As with all media it's a subjective matter. My bias is at nintendo though. It's not the internet riddled with shills even in reality. My girlfriend collected amiibos and even then I called her a fucking dumbass blinded faggot. I own every console. Including the switch. Games as of now are just mediocre at best and it's widespread attention has just watered it down even more. The game I have enjoyed recently is gravity rush 2. And it does nothing but be itself. I believe most games try to appeal to the most common denominator, except nintendo because they know you'll buy it no matter what it comes out to be i.e. fates

If it makes you feel better, 'Digitally Downloaded' gave both NMS and BOTW a 100/100 score.

Ultimately, the scores don't matter, what's written does. But these numbers are meaningful in a marketing sense; they tell publishing houses 'who did well' in a pretty awful way. When you have a bunch of reviewers fluffing up scores in line with their publisher's 'guidelines', it cheats that system. It's not good for other developers when one gets treated favourably on the back of hype.

For all of nintendo's faults, their games usually have a pretty high bar in terms of general polish and quality. No massive game crashing errors, not much if any falling through floors randomly, etc. Plus it's the zelda most people bought a wii u (and some bought a switch) for. Naturally it's going to get good scores because it's zelda, it's been in the works and been overhyped for years, and then, to pile onto it, it's open world, so "infinite content woah!". See: Skyrim.

Same reason why OoT is at the top despite not being the best Zelda game even at its time in my opinion. When something is revolutionary and game-changing, it just clicks with people, and although SC wasn't the first 3D fighting game, not even within its own series, it was the one to set the bar on what would expected in the genre from there on out.

Can you freeze an object and build up momentum on it to send it flying at enemies in cry? Does the fire create an updraft that lets you hang glide across the map? Can you shield surf? Can you control all metal objects? Can you shoot an electric arrow and a lake and then collect all the dead fish? Just some of the shit you can do in BOTW which totally changes the gameplay from other open worlds
