I highly recommend you try it, I'm no tourneyfag but I'm simply of the belief that 64, Melee and Project M are fundamentally better in terms of gameplay and more fun even if you're not into competitive. Smash 4 only really wins out if you're a "more = better" rosterfag (not that there's anything wrong with that).
Personally I didn't play Melee til way after release but I still feel a lot of nostalgia for it simply because all of the stages and characters come from N64 era or earlier, and the N64/GBC era was my fucking jam.

Which is bullshit as plenty of comp melee players who moved to Smash 4 have stated that Smash 4 has just a high a ceiling it's just where Melee was spending hours and hours practising tech moves, Smash 4 is more about reading your opponent and staying one step ahead.
This is why Smash 4 has seen far greater variety in it's tournament placings than Melee ever did, and no it's not just because the roster is larger (although the balance patches have helped).
