Wait for enemy to strike, wait, attack. Ok it's been 4 hours of this. I died 11 times only because I didn't want to wait the enemy to attack. Will it get any better?
I mean there is no story (the opening scene and the old women saying nonsense is hilarious) and there is no music 80% of the time. I'm seriously curious to know what is so special about the gameplay
In all the Souls games (except bloodborne) you attack only when there is an opening to attack, or you'll die.
If you want to be aggressive and mash R1 with no care, play bloodborne. If you take damage you can recover with the rally mechanic by mashing R1 even harder.
Jaxson Ross
NOTHING IT'S SHIT IT HAS NO HITBOXES YOU FIGHT AGAINST AIR
Elijah Sullivan
second one feels the slowest and has the least atmosphere. game becomes also faster you parry or dodge instead of just tanking with your shield. also backstabs.
Henry Phillips
I can see how this perception would form, the enemies you're fighting have no poise, so any attack stunlocks them
I thought the main appeal of playing Souls is that the combat has turn-based elements.
Noah Evans
>I'm seriously curious to know what is so special about the gameplay Game doesn't hold your hand Fucking up has consequences Combat is simple but deep That's pretty much it really. Doesn't take much to be a gem amongst the shit that is modern games
Daniel Rogers
No, the main appeal of playing souls is that the combat like if Devil May Cry and Street Fighter had a baby
Tyler Jackson
I understand that's how the game is designed. I'm not saying it should be smashing button but 4 hours of waiting an enemy to strike, dodge and attack (also the recovery from the attack takes forever) is quite boring
I noticed the game has strange tutorials, no explanation about items or what to use in different scenarios. But that's ok at least it has some tutorial.
back to gameplay there are many weapons but all of them are slow. It seems the reason people love this game of items and the "simplistic, always alone" setting. Am I right or wrong?
Joseph Howard
dodge or cheese with meme-armor
play ds 1 or 3 instead of 2.
if you find yourself playing 2 make sure is SOTF
git gud
Oliver James
Literally every build is viable.
Blake Taylor
I think you're trivializing the combat too much. Dodge enemy attacks and strike when there's an opening could describe every melee system. But if you've played 4 hours and don't like it then perhaps the game is not for you.
Benjamin Lopez
It's more like Tekken and Pokemon
Jacob Adams
>waiting for an enemy to strike
Have you tried playing aggressively? If the enemy has a shield, press forward on the stick at the same time as the attack button and you'll do a "bash" that will break their guard and give you a massive damage riposte
If you're the kind of person who enjoys watching let's plays then this might help
This series features someone who has heard of the series but doesn't really get it (aka like you) being shown what's up by someone who is experienced, and should be reasonably entertaining
Nicholas Wilson
>Combat is simple but deep I want to understand what is deep about dark souls everyone talks about. I was playing God Eater 2 and realized that game has a turn-based feel but it's fast, you have lots of weapons and different attack combinations.
Oliver Anderson
Aqcuire long-range weapons.
Aqcuire poise.
Suddenly you don't have to predict enemy attacks, they have to predict yours.
Ryder Ortiz
there is nothing deep about the combat itself. making builds is where the strategy comes in but it is very light.
Lucas Jones
Because it's a fighting game
Concepts like spacing and whiff punishment apply liberally to every fight in the series.
How many of the bosses have you cleared?
Ayden Murphy
the one in Forest of Fallen Giants
Bentley Cooper
The depth comes from the decision making. Your available actions are simple, pretty much only attack, dodge, heal, but choosing the right moment to do the right thing is where the fun is.
Nicholas Sanchez
I would suggest sticking with the game until you have cleared at least 10 bosses. See how you feel about it then.
Angel Gutierrez
Aw man I think I'm done. I'm going to buy Demon's Souls for PS3 to see if I can understand why people loved that when it came out
Leo Martinez
yeah that is fun but saying it is deep is stupid. when you play some classic platformers or something the whole point was to keep your distance, dodge and attack and choocing the right timing. the fact that dark souls got the hard game reputation is because there was less and less games demanding these basic functions from the players.
Jayden Ross
You've literally just cleared the babby area, the first hour of the game
You have defeated 1 out of 41 bosses in dark souls 2. The boss fights are kind of the highlight of the experience, as well as the pvp.
You want to know why souls is popular, the best way I can explain it is "what if zelda was an mmo where you could grief other players" youtube.com/watch?v=uq7Xevr0Wxc
Nathaniel Kelly
for the 4 hours I played I find the hard comes from not knowing where to go, not having tutorials and dying a lot because of lack of patience.
Obviously people who praise Batman as having good combat mechanic will hate Dark Souls but I didn't like both Batman and Dark Souls II
Carson Gomez
the level design of das2 isn't that intuitive so you can blame on that. usually you don't get stuck in souls games, they are pretty straight forward. there is always a place to go.
if you are playing sofs they went overboard with petrified statues which gets very annoying. there are many small things that makes das2 the black sheep.
Camden Martin
If you don't have that natural role-playing-game desire to make a character and become as powerful as possible and whoop some ass then you're probably not going to get much out of souls, since it is that pure dungeons and dragons experience but molded around action combat that resembles a 3d fighting game
Joseph Morris
>play like a cautious baby for 4 hours >never attempt to change tactics >"when does it change?" kys
Lincoln Wood
Yes dark souls is not a game for me I kinda understand why people like it but not sure why people praise the gameplay
Robert Cox
like others said, you should experience the parts where the games start to utilize the mechanics more to understand it. anyway the core stays pretty much the same so if you want to bitch here instead of playing just drop it already.
Thomas Powell
>but not sure why people praise the gameplay Probably because you hid behind your slow ass tactic and assumed that was all the game has to offer
Jacob Butler
Because "zelda with competitive multiplayer and skill-dependent combat" describes pretty much the most perfect video game that could ever exist
Everything that this dude just said applies to Dark Souls combat
Oliver Green
Why did you start with 2? Why are you playing the worst game in the series? Why are you a faggot? Because this is bait
Jaxson Kelly
i don't bother watching that but spacing and keeping distance should come into the play only when you play pvp. you can kill all the enemies without taking hit even if you stay in their face.
Matthew Smith
Only because the game features invulnerable rolls, but using rolls to evade attacks is a lot like using spacing to evade attacks, it can be anticipated and punished, and it can be difficult to do, especially difficult to do in a way that not only avoids damage to you but gives you an opportunity to deal your own damage.
Every action, playing offensively, playing defensively, even doing absolutely nothing, has a degree of risk and reward, and making decisions about what you are going to do moment to moment is a system like this is what creates depth.
AI enemies, depending on how they're programmed, are not nearly as rewarding to fight in a system like this as another human intelligence is. The AI enemies are obstacles to powering up your character, and powering up is the fun part, and pvping is the reward.
Blake Miller
i agree tough. i think the point i was trying to get on my tongue was that the ai is easily cheeced with rolls they don't demand you to use any of advanced strategies. and using fancy footwork doesn't really help you playing againts static enemies.
Nathan Hernandez
The AI that you have fought so far
Which is less then 10% of the enemies in that one game, which is universally regarded as the weakest game in the series
Benjamin Gutierrez
oh i'm not op. i have played des das and das2 and and my post applies to all of them.
Andrew Scott
Aggression is a privilege you have to earn
Kayden Nelson
>thinly veiled butthurt pcbro tries to imply that bloodborne is not harder than every souls game
Oliver Miller
Dark Souls 2 is the worst Souls game. The good news for you is that it's all uphill from here
David Bell
Nice projection but he is not wrong (for some cases at least). If you get hit in souls its better to back up to safe spot (or if boss wait for another opening) and then heal and go back to action. In BB depending on the health of the enemy or the attack they used, it is just better to keep mashing the attack button to recover the lost health and save a vial. Not that does makes the game easier, but it does incentivize R1 mashing, just like DaS3 incentivize rolling mashing with that little to no cost and 70% weight load for fat roll.
Robert Wright
>running away from a fight is harder than staying in the thick of it trying to get an attack in to gain health back but attacking wildly is easily punishable in souls and bloodborne
Jaxon Torres
Never said wether one was harder or easier, just different mindsets, in DaS before 3, it's also better to stay close at low health so that your enemy uses a close range attack or combo, you dodge it and you get your opening to heal or attack, in BB the raly along with the amazing dash (and other more subtle game mechanics) makes both running away or keep hitting to recover health the more viable mechanics depending on the situation. You can play it like souls and succeed, but the "intended" way is another one. This doesnt make it harder or easier, just different.
Asher Evans
>attacking wildly is easily punishable in souls and bloodborne
BB and DaS3 were literally designed to reward attacking. Bloodborne has gap closing attacks and health regen on mashing R1, and poise only activates in DaS3 when attacking and allows you to R1 stunlock people with a straightsword regardless of armor.
Zachary Bell
>Says you fight against air >Hit boxes can reach into outer orbit
Ian Sanchez
>Wait for enemy to strike, wait, attack. >in das2 stop fucking lying you haven't played shit in das2 you will be constantly swarmed with a group of enemies who stagger you to death if you just waiting to block an attack and then attack back
otherwise why the fuck do you start with 2 when you know well that everyone here is non-stop shitting on that game? Go play with DaS1 if you want to get any idea why people love the souls series.
Joshua Cook
Souls games aren't for you then.
Bentley Perry
DaS1 aged like milk. Even DaS3 is better than that.
Luke Hall
>aged like milk like in what?
unless you are playing das1 on PC with it's 15 fps and horribly clunk kb+m controls there is nothing that "aged" in a fucking last gen game.
