I tried very hard to like it but it was a little too f2p mmo for my tastes. The better demons cost ridiulous amounts of MAG that would require insane farming or $$$ to summon was the real funkiller.

Yeah, in P3 you had to suck everyone's dick to max social links, in P4 everyone just sucks your dick.

I think the combat is pretty fun. It's not terribly deep, but One More feels rewarding and buffs are actually useful. I prefer Press Turn, though.

Beside direct sequels the games are not related in a direct way , just referenced. So you can start from anywhere
If you want something modern try 4
If you want something dark modern try 3
if you want crippling depression start with the SMT series

Just start with 1 and play in order, unless you need more dating sim in your JRPG, in which case start with 3. If 3 is too dark, go to 4. None of the games are strongly connected except for Persona 1>2, and Persona 3 and 4 crossover in the spinoffs. 2 has the best story. Even if you don't like 1, try the later ones.
