Does Sup Forums play dwarf fortress?
Dwarf Fortress
More like Dumb Fucktress
we had a good thread yesterday.
it's not late enough right now, the kids aren't asleep yet, you'll only get shitposting.
i wana try it but havent had a chance yet.
i have a feeling its one of those games thats only popular because its super fucking difficult and hard to understand.
>its super fucking difficult and hard to understand
it really isn't.
it's popular because it might be the best game ever made or will be in 20 years when it's finished.
it's definitely not for everybody though.
Yeah it just looks like shit on the screen but I want to get over the hump where I "get it"
Why aren't you building a gran fortress, are you a fucking filthy elf?
I just lose interest as more dwarves arrive. It's fun at first, and after two or three waves it's still enjoyable, but eventually there are so many people to take care of that I just stop caring. Maybe it's not for me.
the gross inefficiency of this fort triggers me.
personally I just use the auto-labor that comes with dfhack. It automatically turns on and off labors for dwarves based on what jobs need to be done currently and gives priority to those with high skill. along with using manager, it really brings down the micromanagment needed at the cost of some efficiency, but thats alright since large forts don't really need maximum efficiency to thrive.
just limit population in your init.d
you'll get a more manageable fort, and you can change the limit at any time and more dorfs will arrive.
I used to but frustration when trying to do some stuff got me to stop.
Like digging a cistern without a fucking dorf getting trapped, or making a cage dispenser/mass pitting system
Same deal for me. I wish dwarves could be more independent, especially when it comes to producing food and with everything military-related.
>using a tileset
And you dare to call others filthy elfs?
wtf I hate Dwarf Fortress now.
I'm not autistic enough to learn it.
I'll stick with DF lite.
What kind of melee weaponry is the best for your initial squads? Speardorfs? Sworddorfs?
>Keep making adventurers
>They keep dying in stupid ways
Dwarf Fortress is the only game where I can dedicate 6 hours of work only for it to disappear because of an alligator.
I can't wait for the next update. Magic weapons will make dying much more varied.
It depends on what you are against and what minerals you have
I would say axes. They can cut/sever limbs better than swords and big shit like Hydra's that need piercing to kill won't come for a while. Blunt takes too long to kill.
>caring about efficiency
Fucking elf
I made mine above ground made of wood
The hardest part is getting used to the UI
Once you're comfortable with the UI it's endless FUN from there on out.
yeah that is until you run into
>aquifers
>up and down stairs
>the way traps actually work
>the difference between a stream and brook
I think you may be retarded, the only difficult thing in that list is aquifers
how long does it take to transition from having to look up how to do something every time you want to do it to being able to figure out how to do something
I don't mind the format of the UI exactly but the way it works in relation to things seems so inconsistent
m8 it's absolutely worth it just give it 10 mins
Takes like 30 mins to learn then you realise the game isn't particularly challenging unless you intentionally fuck yourself.
>Not caring about efficiency
>Pretending to not be an elf
Fucking elf
I used to, but it triggers my autism and I get lost in like a 20 hour binge that leaves me half dead from dehydration. Like I won't even realize what just happened, as if I was waking up from a short coma.
So I don't play DF anymore.
I wish i could break my symmetry autism and be comfortable making something like this.
what exactly are the benefits of each weapon and damage type again?
I remember hearing blunt weapons are great against undead, and axes/swords are bad because they create more chopped parts that get reanimated.
and spears are supposedly good against forgotten beasts because of some deep penetration? So Axes/Swords are just good weapons for overall use?
Axes and hammers, one can cut limbs pretty easily and the other ignore armor, when you start to get decent, get spear or if you aren't afraid, crossbow with wooden bolts.
...
>Random legendary miner get ambushed by megabeast
>miner skullfuck the megabeast with his pickaxe in 2 hits
>unless you intentionally fuck yourself
If you don't open the circus it's not really Dwarf Fortress.
Copper - spears
Iron - axes
Silver - hammer
Steel - whatever
Bronze hammers are also really good if you can't find silver
And
Steel - Anything that's not a blunt weapon
I was gonna put in the effort to figure it out, but then I just got Rimworld and had a bunch of fun with it, so I stopped bothering with trying to figure out dorf fortress
Don't let anyone meme on you, spears are absolutely devastating and kill things very very quickly. They punch through armor very easily, and even though they don't sever limbs they usually at the very least either sever an artery or nerve.
Spears absolutely wreck.
Except against night beasts and undeads.
And anything that don't bleed or pass out from pain.
Not much anymore, kinda worn out on it. I'll probably pick it up again sometime in the future after a lot more updates, when I feel like enough's new/changed.
>super fucking difficult and hard to understand
Unfortunately dependant on the individual.
DF is one of those games where either your way of thinking can grasp the UI and mechanics without much difficulty and can't understand why other people can't, or it's so ridiculously hard for you that you can't do it (and can't understand anyone who can.)
You're either in one camp, or the other. The only inbetweens are shitposters who like cheap gnome copycats better.
This. I had 10 spear dorfs wipe out a 50 man elf siege and then immediately turned around and wiped out 70 goblins.
Only guy who took a wound was one guy who got an arrow in the foot.
Seemed impressive as fuck to me since i just started playing.
Try a squad of legendary wrestler, it's fucking useless, unless you need to assist your markdwarves.
>cheap gnome copycats
It's just easier to get into, that's all
there's actually a pretty huge update featuring magic in the works you should give it a try
Which one? Gnome copycats are a dozen for a dime.
Wait, did he changed his mind? Last time I heard him talk about magic for DF he said he was never going to add a magic system and probably remove karma biomes.
I heard good thing about Elite compared to Dwarf?
when is the optimization update coming
searching the map takes a long time and shit
i have tried, but i have no idea what im looking at, or doing.
I prefer just to have have Joel play it for me in the background while I work
use the guidebook it really helps
Dwarfs only care about two things, mining and ale.
Efficiency ain't a part of it.
Are there any good mods that let me play as animalman tribes?
I just want to play out my stupid Warhammer Beastman fantasies
you can already play an animal-men through normal adventure gameplay
...
>shared doors
what a cheap asshole
>marksdwarves
Do they actually work now? Or do they still refuse to train properly or alternate between training and combat ammo?
No they are still shit, just make them all hunters they'll get skilled that way.
Efficient asshole, thank you very much.
Efficiency = more ale for less labor
It used to be harder, I think sieges got toned down.
I think they were buffed but I could be wrong?
tried it, couldn't figure out what the fuck the ascci meant, how the fuck do you know that a green / it's a tree and not a goblin?
if they don't explain it in game a tileset it's a must
they do, press K and get the X over the thing you want to identify
...
The game is as hard as you make it really
>tilesets
I unironically like how ASCII looks.
> Download DF
> Avoided guides
> Play for a solid 2 minutes
> ...
> Close game
> Didn't even bother to look up guides
So that was my experience with Dwarf Fortress
I, too, like to play games without looking the controls and then get mad at it when it doesn't do what I want.
aquifers aren't even difficult, you just need to know how to deal with them, and you need to have access to wood and a bit of stone (which you should have brought with you if you were embarking on an aquifer)
Sieges were really OP for a few patches simply because Bows were railgun levels of overpowered.
Now siege difficulty depends largely on what mounts your enemies bring. 40 goblins riding 40 voracious cave crawlers can do a lot of damage if you're not willing to abuse mass traps/bridges.
>intentionally remain ignorant on how to play
>fucking shitty game
Do they still use mounts? Nearly all of my sieges in the past few months (real time) never got enemies on mount.
>Still unfamiliar with more complicated mechanics like pumps
>Decide that I want to build an indoor waterfall to create mist in my tavern
>Channel down about 10 layers to the back end of the hall
>Channel a few more layers down to create a runoff area
>Construct a pump to pump water back up to the river
>Everything seems to be in place
>Cut a channel on the surface to divert river water
>MIST EVERYWHERE SUCCESS! !
>Start seeing blood
>"What, wait"
>3 dwarves decided to wander into the waterfall on the surface
>More start crashing down
>Dwarf bodies smashing into rocks, spraying my tavern with blood
>Bodies block the pumps, the fort overflows
F U N
it's easy to be overwhelmed by what it can throw at you
it's quite something to pussy out of playing a game, atleast you are special user
Watch out for current.
Dwarves will path through shallow water even if it mean getting caught by the current.
I lost 40 dwarves in a waterfall because the main corridor of my cliff fortress went through it, and the grid didn't stopped them from passing through and falling 30-z below. That was pretty funny because below was the dining area and they started splattering on the others.
I just go with copper short swords for my first wave of ten dwarfs.
They don't last the next year
never make hammers out of adamantine either, they're useless
It's pretty useful for your hammerer
bump
Dwarf Fortress is awesome, and honestly the best game of it's kind. I've put in at least 400 hours over the years, here and there. Sadly it's hard to go back to because its horrible interface and utter lack of quality of life features kills what could have easily been my favorite game.
it's not really a "video game" in the traditional sense it's always been a "fantasy simulator" first then "VG" after
this is actually heavily outdated m8
It get the point across and the only change is maces become more useful because of joint damage, no?
why does everyone always want mist
whats so good about mist? does it give good thoughts or something
Yes but shit really don't worth it for all the work and lag that it generate
Is there any tutorial in YT to get used to this game?
Im just a mining-builder fag and i want to learn how to survive.
