Zelda: Skyward Sword

Can't afford to buy the new Zelda so I spent the past week playing Skyward Sword on my hacked Wii

This would have been a pretty damn good game if it weren't for the terrible motion controls. Literally all of the sword swipe directions could have been handled with a second analog stick. Even with the motion-plus addon the shit is still unresponsive. I swipe left, but the game says "nope, you did an overhead slash, because fuck you". Then you get electrocuted and lose health due to no fault of your own. It's frustrating.

But If the controls weren't shit and if the sky wasn't so empty compared to the great sea I might have said it was on par with my favorite Zelda game, Wind Waker.

>WW is your favorite

If the motion controls aren't working, it's because you've got it set up poorly or because you're swinging like a sperg. It consistently worked well for me. I have plenty of gripes with this game, but that was never one of them.

While the motion controls bothered me ocasionally, they worked much better than I expected. Skyward Sword has much bigger problems than an experimental control scheme.

Though funnily enough, fans of the game often try to use this obvious target of criticism as a deflection: "You only dislike it because you were too lazy to move your wrists properly."
Had Skyward Sword had a classic control scheme, it would still have been the worst 3D Zelda.

The motion controls are not the worst issue. The problems are
>game holds your hand all the way through, even telling you what boss keys are for in the final dungeons
>Fi will repeat everything NPCs will say to make sure you don't get lost
>crafting is a shallow mechanic and it's pointless to upgrade anything that isn't the beetle
>Link's moveset was severely cut down, can't move while swinging and your approach to enemies is limited to stationary swings against their telegraphed guards
>repeated visits to the same three areas constantly kicking you out due to blatant padding that if removed, would make the game WAY too short
>recycled minibosses and bosses until the end
>linear unlocking of minigames
>small amount of sidequests
>have to unlock hard mode, which doesn't affect enemy AI or alter dungeons
>story is another time-traveling mess that tries way too hard to establish itself as the very first Zelda story

I thought the motion controls were amazing. Buggy, yes, but conceptually and feel wise it was awesome. Fucking sucks that everyone dumps on this game, and kills an interesting game mechanic because "muh button controls"

speak of the devil

I hate SS. But I loved the motion controls. They weren't perfect, and it was a retarded decision to make stuff like flying or swimming use the motion controls, but when you fight using them it feels amazing. Every encounter is essentially a puzzle which I love.

No, the problem with the game is more that Fi is a repetitive bitch, the overworld is dead, endless repetition and doing the same shit over and over again.

However, it still has one of my favourite temples out of all the games, the buddha one.

but at least the timestone dungeons were pretty sweet though right?

I think the motion controls crippled the enemy variety. You basically fight the same enemies at the beginning at in the end, and even the newer enemies in the middle all basically fight the same: wait until you can strike from a specific angle, then strike from that angle.

Though I just recently found out you could shield bash stalfos that held their guard up, which is kinda cool.
Sandship was the best dungeon by the way. The Buddha dungeon looked cool, but mechanically it was not that interesting.

I am still waiting for a game to have a 3D version of an ALttP dungeon.

This is pretty much the opposite of the truth. The motion controls (really just sword and shield mechanics in general: the rest isn't great) are the saving grace of an otherwise thoroughly mediocre Zelda game. The enemy design especially might be the worst I've ever seen. There is not a single intimidating enemy in the entire game until you Brolly appears at the very end. And not just in terms of artstyle but also behavior. Enemies in 3D Zelda games have always been pretty passive but they're even moreso in SS. It's a shame because the Ghirahim fights show off just how good the core combat system is and how fun it could have been if they put more aggressive enemies in the game instead of the glorified Simon Says boards that make up the bulk of them.

but lttp dungeons are flat, being in 3d wouldn't reakkt add anything to them

I'd rather see a 3d version of Eagle Tower from Link's Awakening

reakkt = really

I fucked that up pretty bad

I mean the general structure. In most 3D Zeldas, whenever you got a key, there was pretty much one specific door to use it on. ALttP's dungeons were less linear. I think OoT's water temple is the closest we got to a 3D ALttP dungeon.

yeah
the ancient beamos factory coming alive was one of the few things not spoiled by fi's unskippable hand holding

Don't get me wrong, I liked them when they worked, but it kept fucking up and getting out of sync or something, because after a while the sword would not respond correctly to my movements anymore.
I really liked the first Ghirahim fight, but by the time I got to the second fight the controls weren't working properly.

Then I'd have to take the batteries out to go through the recalibrate procedure all the time, which didn't seem to help.

Motion controls are just not worth the hassle in my opinion. I would have much rather played it with a traditional controller.

Also I agree that Fi is annoying. But so was Navi. Unintentionally annoying sidekicks are a Zelda tradition at this point.

You mean the level 90s kids nintenbabbies cried so much about that they put arrows on the walls telling you exactly where to go in the remake?

Man that game had awesome dungeons.

>Also I agree that Fi is annoying. But so was Navi.
Navi was not nearly as annoying as Fi. I find it funny that you mention the old water temple memes as 90s kids being whiny, but then go on and pretend like Navi was ever more than a slight distractionon, on the level of Fi who was a downright interruption more often than not.

>Motion controls are just not worth the hassle in my opinion.
I guess it's just a
>worked for me :^)
situation since I never had any problems with them or needed to calibrate except once during the pumpkin shooting (or whatever it was) minigame. I'll never understand why they used M+ for archery when IR tech was already required and infinitely more accurate.

Either way, the fact that so many others had trouble getting it to work right is evidence enough that the M+ simply wasn't ready for mass market. I admit that's on Nintendo for not testing it in enough setups, even if for me personally it was worth it.

I haven't played OoT in like 15 years, all I remember is Navi constantly telling me how to open doors and shit. I may be wrong but I'm pretty sure she'd also chime in and hold your hand through a puzzle just like Fi did, but not as often

Nah, she was not that bad. You could ask her about stuff though.

>your prize for doing every sidequest is a gigantic wallet that can hold 9000 rupees (9900 if you also buy all of beedle's extra wallets)

>at this point in the game you have most likely already upgraded all your shit and bought everything you could possibly need

gee thanks batreaux you bat rastard

the triforce dungeon was pretty cool too

The motion controls weren't that bad, and I really liked most of the dungeons, especially the ancient cistern and the two desert ones. The problems more had to do with constant annoyances that weren't well thought out - dowsing isn't fun, Fi is too hand-holdy, I don't need a fucking description every time I pick up collectibles -, overuse of the three areas, a barren sky, and lack of cohesiveness to the world.

Is Hyrule Warriors worth playing? I got a hacked 3ds sitting around too

looks like shit on the 3ds, and also runs like shit on the original 3ds

>Literally all of the sword swipe directions could have been handled with a second analog stick.
That's how MGR Revengance handled it and it's very well accepted.

I enjoyed the game for what its worth
but it killed my trust in all reviews ever
good to have that bandaid ripped off sooner than later I guess

The motion controls worked okay for me, but I'm the type that works WITH the faults of a game.
My brother, never played much wii, so he never grasped the limiting nature of the tech, and never could have the controls work in his favor, its the only zelda game he never finished.

The Sky was ass, and I had high hopes for link climbing the knights ranks the second I knew you couldn't fly at night, and thought the game would open up once you got a head torch for your bird.

Its fun when it doesn't get in the way of itself, but its easily the most superficial zelda ever. An okay starter for someone who's never played a zelda before, and will probably end up enjoying the older ones because of it.

Man i played through the entire game on an emulator with a 360 controller. Combat was mostly fine but anything that required precision (like the fucking drawing segments) was hell. Almost gave up a few times.

>visit area once
>now visit it at night
>NOW GO THERE AGAIN AND COLLECT NOTES
It's like the game is making sure you enjoy it less the more you play it

>my favorite Zelda game, Wind Waker

Look at this faggot

ss is the best zelda game because it has groose

Last time I saw a WW thread it was nothing but praise

Why is Sup Forums so fickle?

Agreed.

Most of the babies that like WW are asleep. That said it isn't a bad game. Just not good enough that it should be anyone's favorite.

That was a good carrot on a stick to get through the rest
If it wasn't in the game I'd have probably stopped playing half way

I could deal with the waggle control. what killed it for me was the vast lack of content, the utterly forgettable dungeon bosses, the goddes tear shit made even more tedious than it was in TP in five different ways, and having to fight fucking toe worm demise again and again and again

skyward sword gives me a skies of arcadia vibe

except skies of arcadia had a thousand times more shit to do in the sky and you got to ride cool skyboats not lame duck birds who give your wrist cramps controlling them

Why not? It had the best Ganon, the best Zelda, the best King, the dungeons were great, it had some of the best music in the entire series, the sea was fun to explore

When it comes to 3d Zeldas, OoT, MM, and WW are all great, TP wasn't too bad either

I don't stick my nose up at anyone who has a different favorite, it's all just opinions mang
