>when homefront 2 went open world
Did anyone even ask for this? who the fuck even liked the first game?
In many, many years a video game will be you basically jumping into a complete fantasy life that is indistinguishable from reality other than a few things that spice the experience up. Then after a few days you pop out of it and realize that it was only an hour that passed because scientists invented a neural interface that stimulates experienced time dilation.
Bethesda changed all the industry for better. Can't compete with Todd "genius" Howard.
>who the fuck even liked the first game?
I liked the multiplayer of the first one.
It was kinda fun in the "holy fuck how did they even come up with shit" sort of way.
I remember the days when Sup Forums complained about how games were nothing but corridors and open world was great because of the player freedom it allowed.
Open world is fine, that doesn't mean I think crap open world games are fine.
With open world came a lot more yapping and pointless story shit no functioning adult has time for or gives a shit about.
honestly I haven't even really noticed that the FPS market has died down compared to like 5 years ago
witcher 3 story = epic
nier automata story: epic
yakuza 0 zero story: epic
gravity rush 2 /gta san andreas story: excellent. that goes also for sidestories in those games.
> all open world
hmmm...
>gta san andreas story: excellent
lol
it was a fun game and i played it a lot but nigga plz
more engaging then other gta,s
also i forgot to mention red dead redemption. this story was so good that i bought my first soundtrack with real money .
the only game who suffered from open world was metal gear and that only storywise. gameplay was good.
The problem is not in games being open world. The problem is with devs being lazy and more concerned with making political or social statements than improving and innovating in the medium.
Open world is just a natural step in the evolution of video games. Since the beggining, every step has been to remove boundaries. From just a single screen to stage select, from 2D to 3D, from levels to open worlds. The next step is not going back to hand crafted levels, but to turn those empty, static open worlds into truly living, dynamic realities.
> pop into the game
> start an epic quest, honing my skills and becoming a legendary warrior
> defeat a great evil, be revered as a hero
> eventually forget i'm in a game
> settle down for a peaceful life of solitude, in a great big house in the mountains
> meet a girl who is head over heels for me
> it's the truest love one could experience
> marry her, eventually have a kid
> i teach him/her how to fish, swordplay, horseback riding, etc.
> grow old surrounded by people i love
> at my wife's side, die one night in my sleep
> get ejected from the fictional world and thrust back into reality, not a day older than i was going in
> be hit by the harsh reality that everyone i knew in the fantasy world, everyone i loved, was simply an entity fabricated by the game
as if i dont have enough reasons to kill myself already
I bought gta vice city soundtrack when i was younger
For sure.
Any game that is 50% or more in the nature is a shitty open world meme game
>epic
>bought my first soundtrack with real money
You sound suspiciously underage.
i was way more engaged in GTA 4's story to be honest, GTA SA was all over the place and the pacing was weird
Open world is fine for Zelda and Witcher 3. RPGs without loading screens, 1:1 overworld, and seamless transitions between fields, maps, and dungeons may as well be considered open world.
But user, video games were never meant for functioning adults.
You might have become confused by the advertisements on TV and the celebrities that nowadays surround the medium, but video games were a hobby created for and by ugly, hateful nerds, hiding in basements and sharing floppies and cassette disks with other outcasts from society.
The kind of people that come from work not to be greeted by a lovely wife, but an empty apartment with a huge computer. The kind of people that lovingly spend hours obsessing about elves and spaceships.
Boringly spending seven hours to ride a virtual horse through nothingness to reach a shitty town is what these people crave for.

and yes, I've fucking seen R&M
Breath of the Wild is the best open world game to date.

Nope. Fallout 2 is still the best even after all these years.
